(re: WTAM Extra Innings)
The Wedge3000 was in fine operational form. Absolutely no news there.

We’d need visuals to see the sparks, and the violent turning of the head from right to left. And the relentless eyeblinking.

Yep, Crowe should be our pinch runner.

In fairness he was actually safe.

Until Barfield came on to run last night, I’d forgotten that he was even on the roster.

Per Hoynes:
Instead after Tuesday’s game, it’s Barfield that gets called into manager Eric Wedge’s office for a little heart-to-heart to make a roster spot for lefty Aaron Laffey, who starts today.
The meeting must have been interesting because the clubhouse was closed so long that the Indians finally brought starting pitcher Carl Pavano out into the hallway to talk to reporters, who were on deadline.

the barfield meeting must have been interesting or was there a team meeting that wasn’t antecedented?

There was a meeting, but Hoynes makes it sound like he was referring to Barfield v. Wedge.

Rec. Whiny reporters.
Eric Wedge. The Adam LaRoche of managers.

What’s a deadline?
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Look Scotty, I know what you’re going through. Couple years back, a kid came to me much the same way you’re coming to me now, saying the same thing that you’re saying. He wanted to drop off the team. His mother was a widow, all crippled up. She was scrubbing floors. She had this pin in her hip. So he wanted to drop basketball and get a job. Now these were poor people, these were hungry people with real problems. Understand what I’m saying?
What happened to the kid?
I don’t know. He quit. He was a third stringer, I didn’t need him.

How much does he play in Columbus? I mean, really, I want Valbuena at second base every day.
by woodsmeister on Apr 15, 2009 12:23 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, and maybe Valbuena plays at short once in a while?
by dgcambridge on Apr 15, 2009 12:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Valbuena hasn’t played any at short since 2006, and that was only 10 games.

I’m wondering if Valbuena isn’t called up tomorrow. We don’t need a fifth starter again for another 10 days.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Are you sending Laffey down again? It seems too early to get off the skip-Reyes plan.
Though I look right at home, I still feel like an exile

Wedge said postgame that Laffey would get another start and Laffey’s quotes indicate he doesn’t think he’s going down and back up (would that even be allowed?).

He couldn’t be brought back up in time to start on April 25, but they could give someone else the next two starts and bring Laffey back in May. If Huff were on the 40-man, this maneuver would be more likely.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

correct me if i’m wrong, but didn’t laffey get called up soon enough to be in that “option doesn’t count” window?
by Brick. on Apr 16, 2009 9:36 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Mm, yes, that does seem to the case. Of course, if he’s optioned down again he’ll almost certainly exceed that threshold.
There is some value in seeing if we can’t preserve Laffey’s last remaining option year, while also giving the other four starters an extra rest day.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

there seems to be this notion that lewis has a spot waiting for him when he gets back. i don’t see why laffey doesn’t keep a spot if he is pitching well and could stay up the whole year. someone else could get hurt in the meantime, pavano could pavano, etc.
by Brick. on Apr 16, 2009 5:42 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t think Lewis has a spot waiting for him. If someone can and should be sent down when Lewis is ready to come back, then that somebody will be sent down. Otherwise, Lewis will be sent down.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
