Those first two strikes to choo were garbage, wedge has every reason to bitch.

The catcher-blocking-the-plate rule bothers me. I hate when runners steamroll the catcher, but that was Peralta’s only choice. He didn’t, was out, and got hurt because he avoided the collision.

by xrickx on Apr 17, 2009 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I always found that odd. It’s not like the 2B can block the base, why does the catcher get to do it? Just cause he’s wearing a bunch of protection?

by zempf on Apr 17, 2009 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly, which makes very little sense, because you’re asking the guy with no protection to hit the guy with protection….as if running full speed makes not wearing any protection a non-issue.

by xrickx on Apr 17, 2009 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah this is one of those weird things where it’s pretty much totally against the official rules yet it’s unofficially a part of the game. The rule would be tough to enforce though, b/c the catcher has to wait for the ball somewhere.

by mrich on Apr 17, 2009 3:09 PM EDT up reply actions

The first, second, and third baseman all manage at different times to play their position, receive throws, and tag out runners. The catcher can do the same.
