Chulk strikes again!

Wow, they just gave the Indians a strikeout call

New thread. New game.

by mjschaefer on Apr 17, 2009 3:41 PM EDT reply actions

TIMELY

Ben Francisco: An Outfielder only on baseball cards and roster sheets.

by westbrook on Apr 17, 2009 3:41 PM EDT reply actions

but that’s not even the worst part about losing a foot

by mrich on Apr 17, 2009 3:41 PM EDT reply actions

Umpire not impressed with Swisher’s flinching.

by woodsmeister on Apr 17, 2009 3:41 PM EDT reply actions

Ok, new thread = victory.

by zempf on Apr 17, 2009 3:41 PM EDT reply actions

Hegan keeps pronouncing it “Chalk” and it’s bugging me.

by zempf on Apr 17, 2009 3:42 PM EDT reply actions

Both these guys say “enning” so I’m not sure it’s intentional.

by FredOx on Apr 17, 2009 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Thank god it’s not just me

Chulk Ks Swisher.

This was an awesome idea Ryan

AC/DC + Tampa Bay Rays = Big Balls on a Budget

by Orlando Rays on Apr 17, 2009 3:42 PM EDT reply actions

So let me get this straight. Our two mop-up men are responsible for protecting a two-run lead at Yankee Stadium. Ok. Got it.

by xrickx on Apr 17, 2009 3:42 PM EDT reply actions

I think all our non-Wood relievers are mop-up men.

by Ryan on Apr 17, 2009 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, that’s one way to look at it.

by xrickx on Apr 17, 2009 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Unfortunately, we don’t have a whole lot of shutdown guys out there. Betancourt & Perez both mopped up yesterday cause they’ve been sucking, and then Joe Smith can’t pitch to lefties.

by zempf on Apr 17, 2009 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m kinda hoping to see Meloan up soon.

by zempf on Apr 17, 2009 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Can I REC this? Yes, I can.

Eric Wedge. The Adam LaRoche of managers.

by emd2k3 on Apr 17, 2009 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Joe Smith may not be able to pitch to lefties. But Zach Jackson and Chulk can’t pitch, period.

by xrickx on Apr 17, 2009 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions

problem is, with a 25 man roster, you can’t afford to have two mopup men. And when starters can’t go more than 5 innings consistently in a 162 game season, you need to use more relievers. This is on the (whole) rotation more than Wedge.

by Ryan Kelsey on Apr 17, 2009 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree that the rotation leaves Wedge in a tough position. But Smith at a disadvantage is better than Chulk or Jackson at full speed. And where’s Masa?

by xrickx on Apr 17, 2009 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I know i cant understand that either

Where was that? Come on.

by mjschaefer on Apr 17, 2009 3:43 PM EDT reply actions

Joe Smith has great number against the yanks and faces 1 batter ?

by NCTRIB on Apr 17, 2009 3:43 PM EDT reply actions

Look at his splits, he should never face lefties.

by zempf on Apr 17, 2009 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Joe Smith has great numbers against righties, which these guys are not.

by FredOx on Apr 17, 2009 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions

That was a strike. Ump will not call that pitch a strike.

by NickFantana on Apr 17, 2009 4:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I can’t decide which hurts more: that DeRo struck out on a bunch of non-strikes no non-Yankee would get, or that they did so on a HR by Derek F’ing Jeter, and we’ll have to hear about it for the next 85 f’ing years.

Serenity Now. Look at this again and take a deep breath:

by FredOx on Apr 17, 2009 4:47 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

So, let’s turn this anger into something positive.

How do we fix the bullpen?

My four suggestions:

1) Call up Meloan for Zachson

2) Use Joe Smith for more than just righties

3) Use Chulk in higher-leverage situations

4) Use Raffy P and Raffy B in low-leverage situations until they regain skill or DFA one of them.

by NickFantana on Apr 17, 2009 4:48 PM EDT reply actions

One yes. Two nos. And an undecided shrug.

by FredOx on Apr 17, 2009 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m pro #1 there, but the rest I don’t know about. Joe Smith really does suck vs. lefties. I do think at least Raffy P will come around, I’m a little less positive on Raffy B. And Chulk can be thrown into the East River for all I care.

by zempf on Apr 17, 2009 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I think we need to not be so afraid of at least trying Smith against lefties if he is starting an inning. It really limits our options when we have to go to the pen early if Smith can only face righties

by Roger Dorn on Apr 17, 2009 7:48 PM EDT up reply actions

1. I’d rather add Meloan for Chulk. Zachson isn’t good but would be the go-to mop up long inning guy/emergency starter.

2, I like Smith as situational for now.
3. Seriously? Today wasn’t high-leverage enough?
4. I don’t know how many of these we’re going to have. I think both will have to work in various situations.

Eric Wedge. The Adam LaRoche of managers.
