HOW DID THEY CALL IT A HOME RUN?

What the hell is the point of instant replay. Even if there was no fan interference, the ball came back into the field. WTF.

I don’t get how they could view that replay and make this decision. The umpiring team in this series has been abysmal.

a fan interference call in NY might ignite a riot.
There is a significant lack of beards in this year's clubhouse...
The ball didn’t go over the fence, the fan touched his glove….and they got two runs out of that? Huh?
THEY GAVE THE MOST YANKEE-BIASED UMPS THIS SERIES THAT THEY COULD

This is fucking ridiculous. I hope we’re playing this game under protest.

What are the ground rules for landing on top of the wall like that?
Regardless, our bullpen outside of Wood and Masa! are not good right now.
Let alone the player. On top of that, the ball never left the park.
by jakesinger777 on Apr 19, 2009 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions
I realize that, the umps blew the interference but I was not sure if its a homerun in this stadium if the ball hits the top of that fence.
It has to go over the fence for it to be a home run.
by Ryan on Apr 19, 2009 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
Ball hit deep to right field, Crowe leapt to catch it, looked like he got leather on it, but had two fans reaching out into the field of play near him. One fan’s glove hit Crowe’s glove. Umps call this a home run. Crowe and Sizemore call fan interference. IT goes to replay. Umps say, no, still a home run.
The fact that umpires cannot be second guessed makes me sick. They can’t even view a replay correctly.
La Presidenta del Club de Amantes de Rafael Betancourt.
by salome on Apr 19, 2009 3:52 PM EDT reply actions 1 recs
I think instant replay isn’t going to do much. Have any calls been overturned? It seems like umps don’t want to admit they may have been wrong ever in their lives.

Hey everyone: Let’s blame the bullpen, not the umps. That ball almost certainly ends up a home run in an empty stadium.
That said, Brian Bruney is pitching the 8th. Let’s get him.
Can’t we blame the umps AND the pen?
by millionairesrow on Apr 19, 2009 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions
Well, the fans didn’t reach out over the top of the wall, right? Crowe reached over the top of the wall. At least it was crazy close. And of course if it’s close we’re getting fucked, so I’d prefer Jensen doesn’t put us in that position.
From the angles I saw, it looked like the fans hands were over the wall into the playing field. The real issue is the clear and convincing evidence standard.
"Lotta heart in Cleveland." - Ian Hunter
by Denver Tribe Fan on Apr 19, 2009 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions
From the replays I saw, the fans touched the ball in play. That’s fan interference, and probably a judgment call as to whether it’s a double or an out.
Don’t the rules stipulate the fan interference is an automatic out?
by world dictator on Apr 19, 2009 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions
What the F is this?? Watch the replay again tabs, the fan was reaching over the wall, Crowe was still going straight up. Watch it again. That ball is caught in an empty stadium.
And yeah, now the Yanks are opening up on us, and the baseball gods have robbed us of our righteous anger, predictably.
I mean, the ball hits Crowe’s glove, even though the fans glove is up against his, and the other guys bare hand. Look at them lean.
He’s given in, dg. See below.

Yeah our bullpen really really sucks. At least our starting pitching has had the guts to turn it around. The chumps in the backend (outside of Wood and ?Masa?) continue to blow.
by supermarioelia on Apr 19, 2009 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions
why bother having replay at all if that is the result? replay can be used to see if the ball went over the fence (it didn’t) or if a fan touched it (one did). shapiro needs to be on the phone lodging a protest right now, if for no other reason than to determine what the purpose or result of a replay scheme is gonna be. it cannot just be a way to protect the yankees.
Michael Kay arguing that the NFL rules apply in that inconclusive evidence forces you to go with the initial call.
Let’s say the ball hits to the of that wall and bounces back in, striking neither fan nor player glove. There’s no “yellow line” here — a ball can’t be a HR unless it falls strictly into the seats here, agree?

Yep, only CU Adam is over-stating. That shadow is definitely there, but small and it doesn’t stay there the entire incident. However, in my mind it’s good enough — that shadown does not belong to Crowe, and therefore it’s a fan’s shadow. And that should have been plenty for the umps.
It’s not even the shadow that has me convinced (not sure if you can really tell from that). They’ve showed more of a side view angle a couple of times that shows both fans clearly reaching over into the playing field.
"Lotta heart in Cleveland." - Ian Hunter
by Denver Tribe Fan on Apr 19, 2009 4:11 PM EDT up reply actions

by supermarioelia on Apr 19, 2009 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions
How are you not seeing it? I see it every time? It’s a big shadow at the top of the wall as Crowe makes his jump, and Crowe’s shadow is lower on the wall.
Il faut d'abord durer.
According to Michael Kay, you’re going to have to show me a picture giving me evidence to the contrary before I reverse my decision.
by supermarioelia on Apr 19, 2009 4:08 PM EDT up reply actions
Dude, it’s not “big.” You could make an argument that the shadow belongs to another fan. But I think that tiny sliver of shadown should have been evidence enough.
there wouldn’t be a shadow of another fan not reaching over the stands, in the field of play
by world dictator on Apr 19, 2009 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions
The shadow is very very apparent to me. That was the first thing I saw when I looked at the replay. I believe the shadow is from the fan fourth Yankee outfielder’s hat.

Well, fwiw, I’m now fully on board the “we got robbed” bandwagon. CU Adam makes the most important point, which is that there was a fan’s shadow on the top of the outfield wall. And when you have video replay, it’s to look for stuff like that.

Back to winning. C’mon, Raffy R.
Well where is the imaginary line that determines interferece? Is it a vertical line or a horizontal one?
by supermarioelia on Apr 19, 2009 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions
If you can Crowe’s shadow on the wall (you can) and you can see the fan’s, then he’s over the wall. I’m no astronomer, but I don’t think a fan can cast a shadow on a wall without being over it.
