Ditto for Jamey Carroll. Six pitches, two Ks.

What about Choo? What did he do? Hit a home run?

Really long homer to right. Didn’t want to look like I was talking to myself. Weak grounder for Jhonny.

Say Jay, a little OT here, but I was wondering how you got a hold of Antonetti. Are you that famous now or did you just email him or something? Sorry if you already discussed this.

by RD74 on Apr 2, 2009 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I would say that I’m considerably less famous than Antonetti, who in turn is considerably less famous than Victor Martinez. Everything is relative, and I gather Antonetti doesn’t put too much value on “fame.” Without going into details, between LGT and MSP, I had enough credibility in the organization for Chris to return my e-mails, and we set up a phone appointment to talk. After that, it was up to me to “sell” him on the kind of interview I wanted to do, which I discussed in the first entry.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Garko strikes out on a pitch right down the middle. Shoppach with a long single.

by FredOx on Apr 2, 2009 4:10 PM EDT reply actions

Been thinking about Wedge’s quote about playing time, “2 or 3 starters each” for Kelly and Victor.

Seems to me that’s the diplomatic way of saying, 3 for Kelly and 2 for Victor. If it was the other way around, he’d just say it.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

by Jay on Apr 2, 2009 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Yup… from the last rotation in Spring it looks like:
Shoppach: Lee, Reyes, Pavano

It would surprise me a lot to find Hafner being more effective right now against lefties than either Garko, Benfran, or Shoppach. Happy surprise, but surprise.

I think it’s more about each player’s ceiling. Hafner can’t keep all three of them out of the lineup anyway, only one at a time.

by Ryan Kelsey on Apr 2, 2009 8:24 PM EDT up reply actions

In whomevers defense you traded with, while Jhonny puts up phenomenal numbers for a SS, Derosa’s versatility makes him a very well rounded fantasy player. One of the things (besides his buttload of steals) that makes Chone Figgins so attractive….you can plug a guy like that in anywhere.

However, if I didn’t have a bitchin’ shortstop, i would pull that trigger too.

by Roger Dorn on Apr 2, 2009 5:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Except the Marte haters were doing far less rationalization. 700 consecutive PAs of crappy AAA ball + dumped by 2 orgs quickly + clearing waivers….

It’s what I like to call Arm-chair Amateur Analysis

I would’ve expected you to be in a rolling computer chair zing

by joeee on Apr 2, 2009 8:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Dumped ‘quickly’—flipped—by only one org in one offseason. Doesn’t really say anything about Marte. They were just wheelin and dealing. It can’t tell that they got a special glimpse into Marte’s game at all during that time. The AAA showing wasn’t good, obviously, although it’s murky enough. But why go over that again? I’ll grant the Marte haters that he cleared waivers—yes, he factually did that, and sure it says something about where his perceived value is right now.

It’s pretty easy to ignore Marte altogether at this point. Or it would be easier to ignore him were it not for the vitriol he arouses. I still don’t understand that. Marte is not some appalling blight on our franchise. I can’t think of another Indian who has been so irrationally reviled. He’s the opposite inverse of Vizquel.

Hey, many people also thought Jeff Kent was a piece of crap while he was with us because his name wasn’t Carlos.

by jhon on Apr 2, 2009 11:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the vocal defense of Marte on this website causes some befuddlement, I think understandably so. He’s become a polarizing figure.

by Roger Dorn on Apr 2, 2009 11:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I have no beef with Marte, nor do I have a sense of yearning for his arrival.

Thankfully the tempers are mostly defused, aside from one recent and minor flare-up. You’re right that it takes two sides. I think the haters’ impatience started it, like people were hoping he’d fail over Coco or something, but the backlash against Blake might have been a little too fierce. Maybe that’s how it escalated. I dunno. I still think it’s strange. I sense that we’re almost ready to finally move on, if we haven’t already.

I just want the team to do well. It’s how I can pull for Andy and be excited for DeRosa at the same time. If Andy’s able to be apart of that success—great—but it matters so much less to me than just being good.

by jhon on Apr 2, 2009 11:36 PM EDT up reply actions

yearning for his arrival anymore. I ignore him like I ignore my 401k.

by jhon on Apr 2, 2009 11:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Marte hits a homerun, and someone says that the haters will use their familiar rationalization to discredit his act as a sign that he’s good. It was just one AB, of course, the smallest of small sample sizes, and it presupposes that Marte haters need to rationalize to have a point. Which is just ridiculous.

And I’m not a hater. I wanted Marte to clear waivers, I want him with the org – even though some who’ve defended him most think that its best for Marte and the Indians to let him go. I still like having him, for the extremely unlikely chance that he lives up to the numbers he posted as a teenager. Busted prospects are awesome like that. But I definitely don’t mean to open up a can of worms and go through this fight one last time.

Cool. I’m not even following these games, or even the game-by-game results. It helps me avoid the pitfall of reading anything into the Spring results.

Plus Espino’s obvious paucity of clutch is just too much for me to take.

No, really, I just don’t care about how these games go. I like to hear that players are healthy and making progress on whatever it is they’re supposed to work on. In a way it’s nice to not have to care about these outcomes…

On the other hand, I’m more ready to start caring about some actual outcomes.

Yes, I do realize that you’re speaking for ‘haters’, not necessarily indicating your own viewpoint (and I’m not aware of your current version).

Judy is unimpressed by the favorable arizona hitter’s conditions.

by dgcambridge on Apr 2, 2009 5:17 PM EDT up reply actions

How likely is it Judy ever has a real major league AB?

by FredOx on Apr 2, 2009 5:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I meant as a pitcher. Did he just bat? Ha, ha. I’ll set the over/under on Judy ABs at 8.

Cutler to the Bears

by Roger Dorn on Apr 2, 2009 5:38 PM EDT reply actions

Which means the Broncos have the 12th and 18th overall. I can’t believe they won’t come after Quinn with one of those picks, don’t you think?

by NickFantana on Apr 2, 2009 5:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Or trade them both for our 5th.

by NickFantana on Apr 2, 2009 5:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Well they did trade for Orton, he played fairly well last year

Hopefully the Browns won’t move Quinn unless they get a package that they shouldnt pass up

by Roger Dorn on Apr 2, 2009 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Would you do Quinn for the 18th and their second rounder?

by NickFantana on Apr 2, 2009 5:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Eh, I’m not sure. I am a Quinn guy so I would rather not trade him

by Roger Dorn on Apr 2, 2009 5:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, me too. But, for whatever reason, I’m coming around on drafting Sanchez.

by NickFantana on Apr 2, 2009 5:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I can’t help but think any move they make will be bad. I certainly wouldn’t want to be stuck with only DA though. Or DA and a Bruce Gradkoswki type.

by RD74 on Apr 2, 2009 6:16 PM EDT up reply actions

I was all about keeping the 5th, drafting the best defensive player available, and getting the 17th from the Jets in a three-teamer with Denver by giving Denver Quinn, and taking Mauluga (I am NOT looking up the spelling) from USC. This would have made me happy.

Going forward I prefer Quinn, but I prefer defense too.

Also! That Iowa RB intrigues me. Greene?

Steel Nick

by nickjs21 on Apr 2, 2009 6:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Greene most likely will be available in Round 2.

by talonk on Apr 2, 2009 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I figure. If we can get two defensive players prior to the second round, this is my vote.

Steel Nick

by nickjs21 on Apr 2, 2009 8:42 PM EDT up reply actions

You’re really OK with DA at quarterback?

by NickFantana on Apr 2, 2009 10:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, no. And if we’re moving to a ball-control offense Quinn seems to be the guy for it. I imagine DA is pretty useless in a no-receiver running game.

I just want like 35 picks on Draft Day.

Both of these statements are true. But this should tell you something:

I would be pretty thrilled if the Browns went 3-13.

I want them to pick Anderson.

Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.

by westbrook on Apr 3, 2009 12:15 AM EDT up reply actions

That seems very pessimistic. The team won 4 games last year, but only after both QBs got hurt and they blew leads against Balt, Denver, and Indy….and with an undisciplined coach.

I am thinking they are a .500 team right now with good health

by Roger Dorn on Apr 3, 2009 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions

with Quinn, yeah, they might be.

Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.

You are a better judge of talent than I then. Two games is not enough for me to know

by Roger Dorn on Apr 3, 2009 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually, when it comes to QBs (I wish I had a way to prove this) it seems like I’m usually right.

Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.

Also, if I recall correctly, he’s a Patriots fan.

by NickFantana on Apr 3, 2009 5:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, me too. You get those picks by trading DA for a 2nd rounder and Braylon for a 1st and a 3rd.

by NickFantana on Apr 3, 2009 10:52 AM EDT up reply actions

I like this idea. Of course someone has to give a 2nd rounder for DA and we’d have to use one of those new picks for a WR to replace Braylon.

by nickjs21 on Apr 3, 2009 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions

The Giants need a replacement WR of their own, now.

I like Crabtree at 5, although I don’t think the Browns do.

by NickFantana on Apr 3, 2009 5:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Crabtree IMO is the least of possible #5 picks that we would need. Talented, of course.

Steel Nick

by nickjs21 on Apr 3, 2009 6:57 PM EDT up reply actions

and we’d have to use one of those new picks for a WR to replace Braylon.

I’m confused. You want like Hakeem Nicks or Heyward-Bey at 36?

by NickFantana on Apr 4, 2009 12:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Well that’s kind of my point. I don’t want to use a draft pick, especially a high one, for a WR when I would much rather plug holes in the defense and even bolstering the O-line and RB positions. To me WR is pretty unimportant this year, because a) It’s a step-back year anyway, and b) Mangini seems to favor a ball-control offense.

What I was saying earlier is I love the idea of collecting extra draft picks (in a Braylon trade), but dislike the idea of then having to use one of those picks to replace Braylon.

I’m not paid to make these decisions. It’s an interesting scenario for the brain trust and I think this draft will be fun to watch.
