“We don’t think it’s anything serious,” Wedge said. “Hopefully it’s just a two-week thing.”

The link is to Castro, as you might guess.

Not serious…but going to see Dr. Death Andrews.

Oy vey.

Yeah, that’s what stood out to me too.

Ben Francisco: An Outfielder only on baseball cards and roster sheets.

by westbrook on Apr 29, 2009 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

When was the last time someone went to see Dr. Andrews about “soreness and fatigue” and returned with a prognosis of just rest it for two weeks and you’re fine?

I’d bet we won’t see him in a Cleveland uniform until June at best.

by Tribe Fan Matt on Apr 29, 2009 5:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You’re making a connection that’s not there. Hafner’s battling soreness and fatigue, so he’s got some time off. And he chooses to spend that time with Jimmy Andrews, whom Travis befriended when Andrews performed the surgery. That is all.

by dgcambridge on Apr 29, 2009 6:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

To be optimistic, Andrews did the “procedure” last fall, so the fact that he has a little fatigue and is going visit that same doc, the most renowned guy in sports, is not surprising or even noteworthy… I don’t think.

by Ryan Kelsey on Apr 29, 2009 6:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If anything I’d be more concerned if he wasn’t following up with the surgeon post-op. But I can’t say I’m comfortable with this news though given the past mysteries of his shoulder symptoms. Soreness and fatigue to Pronk could be just about anything.

by supermarioelia on Apr 29, 2009 6:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

right, the visit to Andrews isn’t what scares me. The Soreness does.

Fair enough, but I meant more as a follow-up.

by supermarioelia on Apr 30, 2009 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Just seems more than routine to go all the way there to see him for “soreness and fatigue.” The Indians often minimize injuries, so I’m skeptical.

by Tribe Fan Matt on Apr 29, 2009 6:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

“all the way there”… its a shoulder, with a long history, including a surgery done by this doctor and a shoulder that the Indians have tens of millions of dollars invested in. Since he is off for at least the next two weeks a little trip to Alabama to see that doc doesn’t seem too outrageous.

by Ryan Kelsey on Apr 29, 2009 6:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Okay. I’m just suggesting it’s neither routine nor minor as the Indians often seem to imply with injuries. The rationale you suggest is of course also valid. Still standing by my June prediction, but hoping I am wrong.

by Tribe Fan Matt on Apr 29, 2009 6:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The Indians often minimize injuries, so I’m skeptical.

by Manhattan Tribe Fan on Apr 29, 2009 5:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

For now, left-hander Rich Rundles has been called up to take Hafner’s place, but just for the night. Wedge said the Indians will explore all options to fill that spot before Friday’s game in Detroit. David Dellucci, on a rehab assignment at Columbus, is an option, as is Matt LaPorta. But Wedge made it clear that everybody will get consideration, with the Indians factoring in their upcoming opposing starters and the makeup of the roster.

Rundles can wipe out an early lefty and, in the case of a blowout, mop up by pitching two+ innings. Masa will throw a few innings if it’s a blowout, too.

Boo to life.

by dgcambridge on Apr 29, 2009 5:29 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Dellucci, essentially, for Rundles.

And then….Valbuena only if the Indians plan on resting Jhonny and shirting Asdrubal over to SS quite frequently over the next two weeks. Gimenez or Toregas of the Indians plan on using Vic/Shoppach at DH an need an extra catcher. But from a performance standpoint, it’s impossible to defend not calling up LaPorta to get two weeks worth of ABs.

by xrickx on Apr 29, 2009 5:40 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Who is our backup catcher tonight? Shoppach is DH.

Garko?

by APV on Apr 29, 2009 5:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

In the extremely unfortunate event of an injury to Victor, they could still move Shoppach behind the plate, right? They would just lose the DH for the rest of the game, which would be the least of our concerns if a backup was needed.

by Jeffrey R on Apr 29, 2009 5:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

They would, but either way something crazy is going to happen – Garko catches, or pitchers hit.

Get Bavasi on the phone and tell him that we’ve got this great power-hitting AAAA 1B, and we’d like this guy.

Ben Francisco: An Outfielder only on baseball cards and roster sheets.

by westbrook on Apr 29, 2009 5:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Has Garko not already proved himself a bit more agile than we thought? I saw him in person a few times this spring, and he was decent enough to get time in left AND right field (as opposed to just the original plan in left) because he was adept out there. I’m not saying I want him to catch.

I can’t imagine him throwing to second base. I’m just saying that he’s obviously more qualified than most third catchers. Neither he nor the Indians would melt if he logged a few innings back there in an emergency. I’d just prefer to let Garko cover the outfield emergencies and have Gimenez or Wyatt come up and do their normal thing behind the dish.

GAMETHREAD LANGUAGE!!!!

This is depressing. I’m just sad. But, you have to take Wedge at his word that it might be a 2 week thing.

So, LaPorta makes even more sense now. Not only do we have a more gaping need, but if Hafner is really back in a couple weeks, that provides a good reason to send LaPorta back down and save on his service time. I also hate the 2 man bench, even if it is for one night, that is absurd. Dellucci should be back by tomorrow, I’m guessing…. hurray (?)

Cross-posting from the game thread …

Folks seem to be forgetting, we have no 40-man spot for LaPorta. If not for that, a short-term call-up would not surprise me. But we’re not going to DFA Masa or Lil Giraffe just for the honor of calling up LaPorta, when we could just activate Dellucci or promote Valbuena or Barfield.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

One of Those Grady is Likeable and Awesome Articles
It has been several weeks since I attempted to post something on this site but here it goes again. I, as you may know, am an avid, but young Indians fan. Like every young fan, I have made mistakes and upset people who don't need to be upset. I formally apologize to all those whom I may have flustered in my last 2 years of savage posting on this site. With my 16th birthday rapidly approaching, I have decided to turn over a new leaf and begin to accept what the intelligent minds of LGT have to offer and view it as strictly constructive criticism.

With that being said, I have been following the Indians since the day pitchers and catchers reported. I have to say that I have been excited about what I have seen so far:

Asdrubal Cabrera- .750 BA proves in my mind at least that last year wasn't just a fluke and he could be a thrill to have on this team as a cornerstone of a rebuilding process.

As a team, the Indians have an ERA, correct me if I am wrong, of 1.33. This is a reason for excitement simply due to the fact that the Indians haven't been praised about the Pitching Staff in months past as well as the good pitching is coming in the warm Arizona desert in which the baseball has a tendency to fly.

My final reason for excitement is based of the insight that Bruce Drennan provided today. He, like many other Cleveland fans is elated to see that the Indians have started well, one of the main things they could never accomplish under Wedge. He also believes that the lineup that the Indians are able to put out could prove to be one that could propel the Indians into contention as early as this year.

As I stated previously, I am sorry for the childish way that I acted before but I would like to start over and provide the insight that I can and get the CONSTRUCTIVE criticism that every young fan needs.
