“We don’t think it’s anything serious,” Wedge said. “Hopefully it’s just a two-week thing.”
The link is to Castro, as you might guess.

When was the last time someone went to see Dr. Andrews about “soreness and fatigue” and returned with a prognosis of just rest it for two weeks and you’re fine?
I’d bet we won’t see him in a Cleveland uniform until June at best.

To be optimistic, Andrews did the “procedure” last fall, so the fact that he has a little fatigue and is going visit that same doc, the most renowned guy in sports, is not surprising or even noteworthy… I don’t think.
If anything I’d be more concerned if he wasn’t following up with the surgeon post-op. But I can’t say I’m comfortable with this news though given the past mysteries of his shoulder symptoms. Soreness and fatigue to Pronk could be just about anything.

Ooh Mario, you’re slipping. You do the post-op rehap before you return to normal life, not after.

Fair enough, but I meant more as a follow-up.

Just seems more than routine to go all the way there to see him for “soreness and fatigue.” The Indians often minimize injuries, so I’m skeptical.

“all the way there”… its a shoulder, with a long history, including a surgery done by this doctor and a shoulder that the Indians have tens of millions of dollars invested in. Since he is off for at least the next two weeks a little trip to Alabama to see that doc doesn’t seem too outrageous.
Okay. I’m just suggesting it’s neither routine nor minor as the Indians often seem to imply with injuries. The rationale you suggest is of course also valid. Still standing by my June prediction, but hoping I am wrong.

This is a better point. You should emphasize this part of your argument.
It’s the understatement of the year, at the very least.

Yeah, I quoted that because of how little I took it seriously, more than as part of the story.

For now, left-hander Rich Rundles has been called up to take Hafner’s place, but just for the night. Wedge said the Indians will explore all options to fill that spot before Friday’s game in Detroit. David Dellucci, on a rehab assignment at Columbus, is an option, as is Matt LaPorta. But Wedge made it clear that everybody will get consideration, with the Indians factoring in their upcoming opposing starters and the makeup of the roster.
meaning: Carmona might get killed tonight.
Ben Francisco: An Outfielder only on baseball cards and roster sheets.
Have you been watching our bullpen?
Seriously, though, it can’t hurt to have an extra arm in the bullpen tonight, given how many relievers we had to throw at the Red Sox last night.

Don’t know if he’ll be available for tonight but RaffyB has been coming on.

He ought to be. Lewis too.

Dellucci, essentially, for Rundles.
And then….Valbuena only if the Indians plan on resting Jhonny and shirting Asdrubal over to SS quite frequently over the next two weeks. Gimenez or Toregas of the Indians plan on using Vic/Shoppach at DH an need an extra catcher. But from a performance standpoint, it’s impossible to defend not calling up LaPorta to get two weeks worth of ABs.
In the extremely unfortunate event of an injury to Victor, they could still move Shoppach behind the plate, right? They would just lose the DH for the rest of the game, which would be the least of our concerns if a backup was needed.
Has Garko not already proved himself a bit more agile than we thought? I saw him in person a few times this spring, and he was decent enough to get time in left AND right field (as opposed to just the original plan in left) because he was adept out there. I’m not saying I want him to catch.
I can’t imagine him throwing to second base. I’m just saying that he’s obviously more qualified than most third catchers. Neither he nor the Indians would melt if he logged a few innings back there in an emergency. I’d just prefer to let Garko cover the outfield emergencies and have Gimenez or Wyatt come up and do their normal thing behind the dish.
For what it’s worth, you were very right to be concerned about him the other day.

I mean you’re not understanding the rhyme or reason of his off-days and how this would all play out.

GAMETHREAD LANGUAGE!!!!
This is depressing. I’m just sad. But, you have to take Wedge at his word that it might be a 2 week thing.
So, LaPorta makes even more sense now. Not only do we have a more gaping need, but if Hafner is really back in a couple weeks, that provides a good reason to send LaPorta back down and save on his service time. I also hate the 2 man bench, even if it is for one night, that is absurd. Dellucci should be back by tomorrow, I’m guessing…. hurray (?)
But, you have to take Wedge at his word that it might be a 2 week thing.
No, no I don’t.

This team has dissembled regarding injuries several times over the last couple years.

Cross-posting from the game thread …
Folks seem to be forgetting, we have no 40-man spot for LaPorta. If not for that, a short-term call-up would not surprise me. But we’re not going to DFA Masa or Lil Giraffe just for the honor of calling up LaPorta, when we could just activate Dellucci or promote Valbuena or Barfield.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
Man this is disheartening. I am hoping this all a stunt so that he can get a medical presciption for steroids.
This is exactly what a friend of mine said.

This quote from the Castro article is interesting to me:
“I want to look at everything,” Wedge said. “I’m considering everybody right now. We’ve got a lot of ability down there. We need to spend some time thinking it through.”
My guess is that the decision will be made by both the front office as well as Wedge… I wonder why Wedge makes it sound as though it is up to him.
could this not just be a simple excuse for Hafner to get a break and for some roster moves to take place (Dellucci…etc.)?
Walt
Well my pollyannish optimism regarding Hafner seems to have been misplaced. But remember: we went to the ALCS without Pronk, we can do it again.
