And thank goodness we have Wood. Without him, those could very well be 27 9th-inning runs.

Chicken Fausto Carmona
Per Julie:
Chicken breast in a garlic, olive oil, dried chili and gorgonzola sauce tossed with fettucine and fresh tomatoes.

Quite so.

I’m trying to think of something that would be gorgonzola-y without the cheese. I mean, sure, you could find a mold I suppose…
Why not grill the chicken separately with the chili, garlic and olive oil and then just toss with fresh pasta. That should be enough sauce.
by NickFantana on Apr 29, 2009 10:02 PM EDT up reply actions
This sounds good.
I was thinking originally of making this more Caribbean in flavor, so maybe saute the chicken, chilis, garlic, chopped tomatoes, and maybe something like a papaya in oil and serve it over rice and black beans.
[redacted]
OK, that is a different direction but also good. I would say with such fresh flavors, you probably want to be light with the oil. Maybe even don’t cook the papaya and add it in raw at the last minute as a topping or side.

Gotta say, it’s disheartening to hear the crowd in Cleveland respond so positively to plays that are bad for the Indians.
Criticizing players as if you could do their job is absurd.
If you want to say he sucks, fine but don’t act like you can do his job.
I never suggested I could be a major league hitter. But it does not take a genius to know that he’s been chasing high fastballs like crazy. Lester struck him out on one earlier today. I’m not vying for my major league ability, or lack there of. I’m wondering when a MLB hitter is going to make an adjustment after two weeks of not.
Dude really?

He doesn’t mean any disrespect. Saying “Jhonny sucks” is too easy a criticism, and he knows that. We all want Jhonny to do well, as does Jhonny. It’s just a matter of him watching tapes and seeing the way he’s been defeated for the last 10 days.
Handed a break last night, have a chance for a nice relaxing win tonight… oh wait, forgot that it never works that way.
By the way, why is Peralta not getting like multiple days off.
Give this man a fastball. Please.

One thing I do like about the STO crew this year is that they have started talking more about pitching strategy on a pitch by pitch basis, as far as what to throw when. Of course, Manning usually guesses wrong about 50% of the time.

I posted this during the at bat before the disaster. At this point I felt nervous about pressing our mini-streak of luck with Jensen all the way through Van Every, but I felt a kind of detached resignation over our options. If anything but a homer happened, I think that would have been Jensen’s last batter. The worst possible outcome of that situation (no on, two out preceding the ninth) was to serve up a long ball, and that’s what happened.
This is a good example of the worst thing that could happen happening, and that’s this early season in a nutshell.
This team is so tight all the damn time. Clenched sphincters all around.
Sometimes, I just like to b****.
Two years ago, when the Indians were in Detroit, the Detroit announcers said that Travis Hafner is a sphincter hitter—when he comes to the plate, they can feel it in their sphincters.
These are the people who communicate with the masses.
Jhonny’s sphincter is contracting so tightly it’s cutting off blood supply to his testicles. And that’s not even anatomically possible.

Apparently I’m in the minority, but I don’t blame this mess on DeRosa. I think that was a pretty tough error that he took, and he’s done a lot of things to help the team win this game, both at the plate and in the field. And that was a great swing he just took right there.
Grady, on the other hand, has really let the team down tonight.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
I don’t blame a player for the occasional error. General poor play is a different matter, and I don’t think DeRosa is playing badly at all.

You know what? Based on what Jay said earlier and what Wedge said on Sunday, I wonder if it isn’t Grady that needs some calling out here.
Of course, this has been his worst game of the season by far so I might be a little revisionist.
If Wedge isn’t ripping everyone on this team right now I’m going to be pissed. In fact, if Wedge doesn’t show up with a cast on his hand because he broke it punching through a wall in the locker room, I’m going to be pissed.
by APV on Apr 29, 2009 10:59 PM EDT reply actions 1 recs
It’s frustrating because this team seems like it should be so much better. And so many of these games have been tantalizingly close. I don’t know… perhaps this is a psychological bias kind of thing, but it seems like the other team is often dropping in bloop hit after bloop hit, while rocket shots off our bats are tracked down in amazing displays of defense.
Very much so. If Grady bloops in that shot off Delcarmen instead of lining it right at the RF, it’s ballgame.
The Red Sox scored on one hard hit ball, the Van Every HR. Lowell had a broken bat hump-back liner double. Ellsubry, Baily, Varitek, and Van Every had ground balls in that big inning.
I don’t fault Grady for that AB… he got his pitch and nailed it. Just in the wrong place.
Sometimes, I just like to b****.
One of the reasons this team isn’t getting the seeing-eye grounders everyone else seems to be getting might be that the Indians struck out 12 times tonight. Before tonight they were third in the majors in striking out. When you don’t put the ball in play ten times a night it’s hard to get lucky grounders.
Well the bullpen still has some gaping holes in it, the hitting has been ok but they have sucked with RISP, and the rotation outside of Lee and Laffey hasn’t been all that good.
As much as it looks like Carmona is back to form, I don’t buy it, We really need him to go “deep” into a game sometime, tonight was ok but he seemed to lose it in the sixth and wasted away pitches. His K:BB ratio is terrible. I mean terrible. He can get all the ground balls he wants if he continues to walk over four batters per nine innings he’s not going to make it out of the sixth inning often.
I’m so pissed that I don’t even feel vindicated for criticizing Grady over the past week.

by JulioBernazard on Apr 29, 2009 11:05 PM EDT reply actions
Okay, so, basically I think this is what happens when your bullpen gets overextended. Jensen Lewis goes 30 pitches because nobody else is fresh and trustworthy, things go wrong. If Raffy B doesn’t morph into the fetid corpse of an effective reliever, we win.
by fleerdon on Apr 29, 2009 11:11 PM EDT reply actions
Lewis didn’t seem tired at all. He was, as the announcers pontificated on just before he gave up the dinger, really in the groove, throwing strikes. Lost his focus on one (ok two, the inning before on the 0-2) pitch, Van dings it, then he strikes out the next guy.
I wasn’t speculating about Lewis in particular, just in general: The less relievers have to throw per outing, the more effective they are. I realize it’s not terribly scientific, but I think we were pushing our luck.
