Carroll to the DL, Graffanino added to roster
Jamey Carroll apparently broke a bone in his hand on a HBP on Saturday, so the Indians, with two spots spare on the 40-man, have added Tony Graffanino and basically wrecked all those Opening Day roster stories that already got filed. Carroll is eligible to return on April 20, but by that point, Indians may consider optioning Crowe or Barfield rather than losing Graffanino on the waiver wire.
Graffanino, whom my wife likes to call Little Giraffe, primarily has played second base, but he also played 50 games at third over 2006-2007. He was injured for much of 2008 before coming back for a brief stint with Buffalo, covering all four infield spots. And obviously ... championship.

Shapiro thumbs through “Survival guide to the 2009 season: Cleveland Indians”….page 178, paragraph 4:
In the event of an injury to Carroll, Jamey, on or before opening day but following the conclusion of spring training games, see Appendix 3, table 6, line 54 for appropriate response…
Now calmer, knowing the team has planned for this contingency, Shapiro thumbs forward to Appendix 3, table 6, line 54:
Team response: PANIC!
Oh no! Calamity!

It’s his finger…or a hurty fingle, as my 3 year-old nephew likes to say.
No, not you. Your helmet!

Thanks, Jay, for instituting the nickname in the FanShot. It’s more efficient that way. Also, it’s a nice one.

So basically we’re trading a more defensive-oriented utility guy for a more offensive-oriented one.

Breaking your finger in the last at-bat of spring training must be a sickening experience.

Why would Graff have to go through the waiver wire to be sent down to the minors? Is he out of options?

Yes, now that he’s on the 40-man roster, the Indians would have to outright him to send him to the minors.

And even if he passes through waivers, he can refuse the outright and become a free agent.

He’s 35, with almost 10 years of service time. Veterans cannot be optioned.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

OK … Got it. Thought there had to be a rule in there I didn’t know about.

I get the feeling there will have to be a lot of policing today.

Hmmm — didn’t see that coming.
Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.
