Why Shouldn't I Be LGT's Resident Beer Connaisseur

I have had this unofficial title since last season, I'm not really attached to it, but I had figured no one else enjoyed many finer beverages than PBR or Blue Moon, or whatever.  Not really a judgement, just an assumption I guess.

So why shouldn't I be LGT's Resident Beer Connaisseur?  Or better yet, why should you be?

Take this as a chance to enlighten me with your beer knowledge as I took all of you for swill drinkin' baseball folks.

Once we are done doing that, we can talk about homebrewing and beer.  Maybe I can make some recommendations to you guys.

by cleveland teamer on Apr 8, 2009 9:07 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It means “beer for keeping”. In Belgium and France farmers would make lots of their own beer, but the summer was too hot to control fermentation. Lots of brewing was done when it was cooler out. This one just happened to be one that wasn’t for daily consumption, like a saison was.

oh man I got a great story about that. My wife and I honeymooned in Montreal and I convinced her to go to an Expos game with me. Stade Olympique was a real dump, it turns out, and I don’t blame Expos fans one bit for staying home. Anyway the series was against the Cardinals, and this was 2001 when Mcgwire was still playing, so they got what was at the time a really good turnout — about 8000 souls, if I remember correctly.

So the game happened to be pretty tight, and in the bottom of the 8th with the Expos done a run or two, Geoff Blum hit a deep home run to left center and as the ball is leaving the yard, the Quebecoi dude behind me stands up and yells “OUI MONSIEUR! OUI MONSIEUR!!” And I decided that that was absolutely the most awesome home run call of all time, and if I’m ever a PBP guy that is totally going to be my signature home run call.

Glad to see you have had some nice beer. Chimay is top notch, though I’m not really into Belgians. Fat Tire is solid and I have heard good things about everything Odells makes. Can’t say I’ve had the Easy St. Wheat though.

I am currently on year three of a Belgian-style binge with no end in sight…

Koningshoeven Dubbel
Dutch Trappist brewery. The only non-belgian trappist. I have downed many of these at the Hop Haus in Chicago.

Fin Du Monde
This has replaced Delirium Tremens for me. Great beer.

Troubadour Blonde
A little lighter ABV (like 6.5%), so I can actually drink more than two of them without embarrassing myself (that starts to happen halfway through my 4th), yet very tasty. It can be tough to find, but it’s worth it. B Bar in New York has it, and I’m trying to find it in Chicago.

Quatre-Centieme (made by Unibroue.. same brewery as Fin Du Monde above)
I’ve only had it once, so confirmation is required, but I really liked it.

Warning: developing a habit for these beers is a terrible financial decision.

Funny you should mention Metropolitan, because I just tried their lager for the first time on Saturday. To be frank, I didn’t like it… a little too watery with a bitter finish. But I waited to reply until I got home, where I knew I had a bottle of their copper lager waiting for me… much better. Quite good, actually. A little flat, but that may be an aberration.

I just got back from the “friends and family” opening of Matt Cole’s (former Rocky River brewmaster) new venture on the corner of Columbia and Lorain in North Olmsted. He had 9 amazing brews on draft. I don’t venture that far out to the suburbs for anything very often, but I imagine that I will make the trip again in the near future. So where is everyone from exactly? I want to get an idea of what you can get regionally, like local breweries. I know a lot of you have Great Lakes, and the only beer I’ve had from them (Edmund Fitzgerald) has been awesome. Some of you might be close to Three Floyds, maybe Upland, Founders, not sure what else.

I’m from Boston by the way, so I can get tons of stuff from all over, just not a whole lot from the mid west. I have to trade for that stuff.

Strangely enough, the best Miller Lite i’ve ever had was at Bubba’s Q in Avon. I was disappointed with their draught selection (only cheap domestics with Ness thrown in, and I wasn’t in the mood for Ness), so was stuck with that. But for whatever reason, it tasted like gold… cheap, bottom of the barrel gold.

Agreed, except for the part about Miller Lite. As I’ve said numerous times here, I just refuse to drink it. Makes me gag. It has nothing to do with being a beer snob… I’ll pounds some Coors Light or Bud Light or even PBR or Natty, but Miller Lite makes me want to puke.

by mrich on Apr 7, 2009 5:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

it doesn’t make me nauseous, but Bud Light is on the bottom for me as far as cheap domestic lights go. I’d go Mich light, Coors Lite, Miller Lite, and then Bud Light only if it’s free.

Gotta go with Turk here. I can drink Mich light, bud light, and coors light, but Miller lite is just no bueno.

by bewwolv on Apr 7, 2009 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Even discussions about the flat-out bad beers is a moot point. As Turk points out – Miller Lite makes him gag. For me, Coors Light makes me gag and Bud Light is barely drinkable. For me, they are the beers I have when I’m having only one. (I’m okay with Bud, but still can’t stomach anything from Coors – I think it is the yeast strain). Mich Light and Busch Light – now, that’s what I’m talking about!

by jhon on Apr 8, 2009 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think our last fight was half serious, half ironic. But back in the day, you and me were playing NFL 2K on the dreamcast and I got so frustrated at your consistent torching of my defensive backs that I screamed at you, causing you to chuck a control at my head.

by joeee on Apr 8, 2009 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It must have been QB sacks. I remember how you could pull a DE off the line and swing around, and there’s no way to block it without giving up control of the QB. That was a frustrating aspect of the game. I think we instituted a ban on the technique, but the policy always fell apart in close / late situations.
Ben did this too, and more often than not we’d end up throwing down. I guess that makes me the bad guy. No more Madden.

The point is, even without beer these contests could get intense. And when you add beer, it just gets ridiculous.

So bringing this chain back to where this started, Chuck brings up a good point. It’s fun to talk about beer. Many people like good beer. But beer will make you do stupid stuff. Fighting with your brother and breaking stuff is a moderately stupid thing. I’ve done many dumber things while under the influence of beer—many of which are too dumb to repackage into a funny drinking story. We all gotta take it easy on the beer.

I love all different kinds of beer, and while I can appreciate the finest in obscure craft beers (Maudite and Fin du Monde from Unibroue are personal faves, along with Portland Brewing’s Mactarnahan Ale), I also count Miller High Life and Miller Lite among my favorites. And basically, I think one person anointing hisself the "resident beer connaisseur " is just going to lead to a big d—k measuring contest that we don’t need.

Thirded (except for the miller lite part). Patrick, if you want to be the macramé connoisseur I don’t think you’ll get a fight, but being a beer connoisseur certainly isn’t a singular title in these here parts. Personally, I think a beer advocate is a better way to be.

by Thommy on Apr 7, 2009 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I guess I will respond to the group here. I already am a beer advocate, maybe I should change the sig to that. I added what is there now to my sig when someone labeled themself as “LGT resident kinesiologist” or something of the sort. Not really a d—k measuring contest at all. Not sure who was present for opening day, but it was brought up there, I didn’t just create this post to see if it was OK with the community, I did so because someone brought it up. I almost felt like people were offended by me having it there, though it had been there for months already. Lastly, I wouldn’t label myself a beer snob, but I would rather not drink Bud, Miller, or Coors due to them lobbying to keep states with insane alcohol laws the way they are. This essentially makes it so the only beer that can be sold in some places are BMC. This is what I have read anyway. Not a beer snob thing. I have Narragansett Lager as my semi-local yellow fizzy beer.

by Roger Dorn on Apr 7, 2009 5:54 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

As was said earlier, taste is relative. I for one enjoy beers that are hoppy as hell, though I do not consider them “hoppy for the sake of hoppy”. All of our tastes differ. I just wanted to start a beer convo and included a question up there that was directed at one person who brought up a good point. I had a seemingly meaningless sig, and someone asked me why I thought I was deserving of it. I thought to myself, that maybe there are people on this board who also like good beer. Not knowing anything about anyone on here, I never thought about this before. When I am not thinking about the Indians or work or whatever, I am thinking about beer (in a non-alcoholic sense). I am addicted to the site beeradvocate.com, I write homebrew recipes all the time, I want to work for a brewery after I get student loan stuff figured out, I can’t get it off my mind.

I guess now I have to apologize for my sig? I changed it, but still. My bad.

OK so you think you know something about beer is that right? Let’s compare bona fides.

Got any DUI convictions – I have. Ever pick a fight with half a dozen motorcycle hoodlums after consuming 4+ gallons of draft? Didn’t think so – but I’ve done that too. Wake up in the morning with The Bride of Frankenstein after wrestling a case of Bud to the ground? Too numerous to count. Finally, ever marry one of the original Harpies because you promised her mother you would after an all-nighter at the local watering-hole? Got a stack of cancelled alimony checks for that little escapade too.

I don’t wanna hear about no “hickory notes” or “bitter finish” – what the hell has that got to do with drinkin’ beer? Show me your rap-sheet kid, if you wanna be the local beer expert here.

6 recs be damned, this was just sanctimonious, sentimental preaching and utterly without point.

Pitcher dies, everyone is sad. DUI, hit and run, everyone is outraged. Naturally and rightly.

What’s funny one day might not be funny another day; humor is contextual, always. If you were a whiny little prig and didn’t like Chuck’s comment on the day he posted, surely you still won’t like it after Adenhart’s tragic death.

None of which changes the fact that nobody here needed to be lectured on driving drunk, including Chuck, and when we are a few months or even a few days removed from this one tragedy, Chuck’s post will stand as amusing bit of hole-poking over the spectacle of people debating who has the more tasteful, sophisticated way to get hammered, and Dean’s post will stand as … what … another self-righteous PSA posting of stuff that everyone already knew.

FLAG.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

by Jay on Apr 10, 2009 11:36 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I love you Jay, but you’re wrong here. Maybe Dean was a bit over the top, maybe not. However, a DUI/OVI is never just an “amusing bit of hole-poking.” It’s not funny, it’s not something to be put forward as a bona fide, it’s not even ironically humurous. There is no discernible difference between driving drunk and firing a gun in a school, and I don’t see anyone poking fun about that. Drunk driving is, and always has been, ridiculously stupid and should never, ever be taken lightly. It’s an asinine behavior to be deplored and derided at every opportunity. So, no, it’s not funny one day. It’s not funny ever.

by Jay on Apr 10, 2009 11:57 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, it was in defense of DUI/the other stuff Chuck said or the idea he espoused as ironic humor, free from the madding crowd who would take it to literally. I get that, I can read. Look, get on your high horse all you want about who is sanctimonious and who isn’t. At the end of the day, Chuck put it forward as something to take some sort of perverse pride in and you, even if tangentially, defended him.

I’m not getting into a pissing contest with you on here because there is not point in it. I’m a police officer, I’ve seen what happens when people drink and then get behind the wheel. It’s not appropriate to use it as bona fide, as ironic humor, or anything else. Nor is it appropriate to make a further comment defending a post in which someone put forth a DUI in even a mildly positive light, regardless of the overarching theory behind the comment you made.

I’m not going to change your mind, I’ve been on here long enough to know that. But, frankly, some sanctimony about drunk driving is probably a good thing. When people who say something against it are called “whiny little prig” so that a precious few can go through life without feeling preached to, there has been a disconnect between the intellectual exercise and actual reality.

by fwembt on Apr 10, 2009 12:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Your problem isn’t convincing me that I’m wrong. Your problem is that you haven’t read and understood Chuck’s original post.

What did he just post this morning?

It’s not about "manly" – it’s about stupid. My point is this: just about every really stupid thing I’ve ever done in my life involved beer.

Chuck’s post talked about:

  • DUI convictions
  • Getting into ill-advised brawls
  • Waking up with an ill-advised bedmate
  • Promising to marry a harpy

How much was his post about DUI’s? Six words.

How much was it about doing all kinds of incredibly stupid things? All of it.

How many of you guys have missed Chuck’s point completely? At least six of you.

Chuck’s point — since you’re so locked into Mr. Garrison mode that you can’t actually read I guess — was:

  • The primary function of beer is that it makes you do stupid things.
  • Glorifying it behind a thin veil of sophistication is pretty dubious.
  • “Experience with beer” is not necessarily something you brag about.

Chuck’s post was provocative — yes — but also funny and actually wise. It never glorified DUI’s; it de-glamorized heavy drinking. And quite unlike all this sanctimonious BS, Chuck’s post may actually change someone’s mind and do some good.

You are reading what Chuck wrote in a completely different way than I am and, I am relatively certain, in a different way than it was written. Nothing he has said, before or after, conforms to the picture you are painting, other than one quote you found. Like I said, it’s an intellectual exercise to you, it isn’t to me.

Either way, I’m done discussing this. What you just wrote is terribly heavy handed from someone who gets so tweaked about supposed sanctimony.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

by Jay on Apr 10, 2009 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’ve been holding back on making this comment for a while, but we have to keep Chuck’s DUI in context.

He said he got it when he was young and stupid. From that we know it must have been a VERY long time ago. Do not judge what he did at that time against today’s standards. Attitudes about drinking and driving has changed a lot over the last 30 years. Penalties are a lot more severe. These are all very good things, but don’t judge Chuck’s conduct against those standards. Also, be glad he didn’t kill himself or someone else when he made this mistake. I’m sure he is.

Now, let’s take his advice that his experience has allowed him to give us. Drinking and driving is stupid, as are getting into fights with motorcycle hoodlums, sleeping with ugly women, or agreeing to get married while intoxicated.

Now, everyone get off their high horses, relax, kick back, designate a driver, stay away from bikers and ugly women, crack open whatever beer appeals to you, and enjoy some baseball.

Here’s what always brings me back to this site – the level of sophistication on just about any topic. Jay’s got my back here – yeah, he describes my intent very accurately.

I was a prime example of what they usta call "instant asshole" back in the ‘hood – just add alcohol. I was just responding to the sanitized, up-scale talk about alcohol. There’s another side to all of this "hoppy, smooth finish" BS and I just thought that it needed to be addressed. Here’s my point: this stuff is like handling a chain saw; you need to be respectful of its power at all times.

And yeah, this all happened back when Johnson was president and gave me another little life lesson – help keep me from getting drafted too. Through a string of unfortunate circumstances, I ended up in the ol’ County Jail on E22nd and Payne for a spell – and this was my first and only offense. And Harry’s right – attitudes about drinking and driving were very different. One of the guys I was locked up with caught 3 days for his sixth conviction – a much, much shorter time than I got.

Not that any of you need to be reminded but I thought I might be able to save at least one of you guys from the same experience. To this day I’m thankful that nobody got hurt – myself included.

now that deserves a ‘rec’

by macasson on Apr 11, 2009 4:40 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Attitudes about drinking and driving has changed a lot over the last 30 years.

In the early 1970s I was driving a lot between Milwaukee and northern Wisconsin, to Rhinelander. It was a long haul on two-lane highways. It was pretty much conducted station to station, which is to say tavern to roadhouse. Hit the tavern, use the john, play a game of pool, have a quick beer, maybe eat a bowl of soup, and get back on the road, with a six pack. When the beer was gone, it was time for another stop.

At that time, it was okay to drive with an open container in Texas and South Carolina, and probably other places I don’t know about. You were not allowed to drive drunk, but if you were pulled over and you had a can of beer in your lap, it wasn’t automatic trouble.

Blood tests were rare. Mostly you were asked to do something to demonstrate sobriety, like stand on one leg, or recite the alphabet backwards.

by odradek on Apr 11, 2009 9:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

wow, rhinelander … that brings back memories of exquisitely cheap beer consumed in college, on the order of $6 a case.

by macasson on Apr 12, 2009 4:56 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Really? What else is it about?

It’s about bona fides, which I am sure you are aware, are credentials or a way of establishing standing. Citing a DUI as a bona fide that you are the best or most knowledgeable drinker is using it to establish your reputation. That is glorification of one of the stupidest acts a person can commit. That was my point.

You want to read it as some sort of self-deprecating, teach the world what not to do, wise saying? Be my guest. But that isn’t, by very definition, what it is. So, go ahead and delude yourself into making what was said fit your opportunity to shout down the sanctimonious, but don’t pretend that you are somehow the final authority on the issue. I’m relatively certain the ad hominem attack isn’t needed either. You aren’t defending Chuck anymore, you are advancing your own overblown rhetoric.

I guess I will have to disagree with #1 and #2 of the points you are suggesting that Chuck made.

When beer is consumed in excess, yes, it can make you do stupid things. Relate this to point #2, and you might be able to say that what you consider “dubious sophistication” is another man’s appreciation (mine).

Sure I’ve got drunk before, but I honestly don’t enjoy being intoxicated. I know my limits very well. I also think that it takes a very sophisticated palate to fully appreciate the beer you are drinking. Beer can be dissected into a meal full of flavors.

This stuff is really beside the points being discussed, but I felt I needed to say this as half of what Chuck was saying was an insult towards me.

I actually respect chuck’s response back to me. I think it was more of the combination of the “have you any DUIs” and the “show me your rap sheet” comment that seemed like bravado.

I was not actually attacking chuck. I have driven drunk before (I’m not infallible). Heck I’ve even been pulled over, but luckily was let go.

I actually had that feeling when I read chuck’s post orignally, I just thought with the tragedy, it made more sense to post it.

If you don’t like it, fine. Delete the whole thing, I honestly don’t care either way. My intent was not to get into a pissing match with chuck or you about this. It was just something I felt inclined to type. My feelings won’t change either way.

I think that idea behind this thread is fabulous, if it involves talking about good beer. I’m not a beer snop (I actually don’t like hoppy beers at all) but I feel like there are so many GOOD beers to discuss, you could make 70 threads about it.

I’m a big fan of the Long Trail (VT) brewing company, (very accessible down here in CT) Stone is fab, and I like most things Bells makes. I’ll drink anything at the Brew Kettle (Strongsville, OH) that is more than 7% abv because it ends up super malty and delish.

Also! Christmas Ale and EF are great beers. I generally trade for them every year.

Im not sure what it is about Miller, but generally folks who enjoy the taste hate the other light beers, and vice versa. I love me some miller, but can’t stand the other swill. Nargansett is a solid lager too.

I’m ambivalent about New Holland. Loved Dragon’s Milk and Ichabod, hated Cabin Fever.

Dragon’s milk is the bizzle, son. Love that stuff.

I bought a Dragon’s Milk to help me celebrate the Indians winning the 2007 ALCS. Around the end of game 7, it served a different purpose. I have not had it since.

I have been trying to cut back on the beer consumption lately for a variety of reasons, i.e. financial, health, productivity. When I have been drinking, I have been trying to go cheap, in particular, High Life and Busch.

This isn’t to say that I don’t appreciate the micro-brews and specialty beers, I do, it’s just been tough to justify spending the money lately.

The good local brews in my neck of the woods, St. Louis, are O’Fallon’s 5 Day IPA and Charleville’s Triple Wit. Both breweries generally make solid brews, but are pretty limited in their distribution. The biggest micro-brew in the area, Schlafly, isn’t really that good, though their restaraunt in Maplewood is very good and reasonably priced.

High Life and Busch

One of these is not like the other. High Life, I salute you.

by APV on Apr 8, 2009 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh, I agree, but the problem is that most twentysomething folks do as well. Bars are starting to figure this out and charge more. I don’t mind Busch, it’s 3.99 for a six-pack and there’s also a bar near me that has draught specials on it.

I’m opposite on this one. I’m straight Anheuser-Busch over Miller guy:
- Budweiser over MGD
- Bud Light over Miller Lite
- Busch over High Life
- Natty over Beast, but I have a special place in my heart for Beast because of UD.

I was just wondering if we could get back to some baseball…Or at least incorporate baseball into this thread. Has anyone here claimed the title of beer connoisseur while attending games? If not, I know someone who went around to nearly all of the concession stands a year ago until they found the large Molson cans and bought them for the same price as the domestic brews because they were in metric and the serving size was larger.
Now THAT’S a connoisseur.

Quality over quantity, my friend. But impressed by his effort.

At the ball park the equation is Quan>Qual.

I used to religiously purchase lower reserved seats in right field for two, equal reasons:

1.) I liked the view.

2.) The Leinenkugel Sunset Wheat cart was right up the steps.

Opening day 2007. Snow game. Totally rocked that exact cart during a two hour delay!

I was really bombed at that game. Hours of delay on East 4th followed by big Budweisers two at a time til they stopped selling… that’s when we left, I don’t remember most of the rest of that day.

What ‘stache didn’t mention is that the cart was technically closed with nobody behind the counter—but the tap still worked.

Not sure how it is elsewhere, but going to games in California parks is much different than at other places. In Cali, you have to walk to a stand to get beer (max two per person). They don’t have beer vendors that walk up and down the aisles.

Or has the rest if the country gone this way now?

When I was in college, I enjoyed the supersize of can of original Coor’s at Braves games. I haven’t had any banquet beer in a long long time, though.

At Korean games you can get god-awful domestic beer for about $2 a can. And fried squid to go with it.

I have hidden the other thread.

I’ll gently remind everyone that this is an Indians message board and there’s no reason to have two off-topic threads about the same thing posted one after another. The vast majority of off-topic discussion should remain as just that, off-topic discussion happening within a larger thread not as threads devoted to the off-topic.

I don’t think that any of these have been mentioned before, but, to my mind, West Coast beers (especially from the Pacific Northwest) are the finest in the nation. Much of this is undoubtedly because I cut my beer teeth, so to speak, in the Northwest. But having lived in every major region of the nation, I feel comfortable declaring the Northwest to be the nation’s most fertile beer region.

Some favorites:
Deschutes
Bridgeport
Alaskan
Pike
Victory
Sierra Nevada (especially the Big Foot barley ale)

I hear there is a brewpub, something like Raccoon Lodge, that makes some awesome lambics.

I am going to have to dub San Diego the nation’s most fertile beer region though, at least for my tastes. No one beats the IPAs that come out of San Diego except for Russian River in NorCal.

I think that’s a stretch. There are some good beers in San Diego, no doubt, but I wouldn’t say the most fertile. I was at Pizza Port right after New Year’s, which is very good. Stone and several others, too. But in my experience people aren’t huge beer drinkers in San Diego (probably too healthy), so I don’t think I could ever accept the “most fertile beer region” thing.

There are tons of beer drinkers in SD! Those breweries and brewpubs couldn’t survive if there weren’t.

Vermont is the most fertile beer state. 1 brewery for every 32,698 people.
