I haven’t been able to get the WTAM feed all game. Keeps saying “media error.” And now even the Texas feed is just not playing anything.

what it boils down to is that i have a Dell D820 that’s been going like a machine for 1.5 years with no malware/significant problems and no sign of slowing down. and i can play games on it.
But see you’re one of those smart computer guys. I feel like PCs are better for folks who like to tinker. Macs are better for idiots like me. It’s like DVD players vs. game consoles. You can get any range of DVD players and they all do the same basics, and you get what you pay for otherwise. WHereas with a game console, you pay a premium for standardization and an intuitive, integrated interface. I feel like the premium may be worth it.

I totally agree, and that’s why I have resisted for so long. I still thin very few Mac users feel this way, and most just go for “ooh shiny!”
For me, it’s a combo of the above and “ooh shiny,” but more of the former.

Speaking of which, my Grandpa had this silver Canadian coin set. Impulse buy at the ’76 Olympics in Montreal. They minted tons of ’em to help finance the games. Their face value is $30 dollars Canadian (two 10s and two 5s).
33 years later, I’m strapped for cash and I think of selling the coins. I calculate their silver weight. They are now worth $30 American according to current silver prices. Exactly $30 US. I thought that was a peculiar coincidence.

You still run. Did you see the Rangers try to throw the ball to first base tonight?
'Z' button abuser.
Haha. I get your point. Throwing errors happen. But it’s too easy to say in this situation “run it out.” It wasn’t Choo being lazy. I think he realized he was in a bad spot, and tried to play it off like a walk. I’m not saying it was the right move. But it was understandable.
Irrelevant — either you’re out at first or you’re safe at first via an error or a walk.
Inexcusable lack of fundamentals.
'Z' button abuser.
Agree to disagree. In that situation, I’d bet the likelihood that it’s ruled a walk is greater than the likelihood that an error is made on the throw to first base.
You run in that situation if it is a clear ball and wild pitch… you also make a hard turn depending on what the 1B says, because you should be looking to take 2nd if the catcher hasn’t gotten to the ball or can’t find it. the fact that it was a check swing makes it even more clear that you sprint down the line. Choo should be scolded.
If it was a clear ball, he wouldn’t have swung. You have the benefit of reflecting. Choo made a decision in a split second. It did not work out to his favor. I don’t fault a guy for that. This wasn’t a failure to run out a grounder or a high pop-up.
Take a step back.
Nope. Sorry. Ball gets away from the catcher on a 3-2 count, you haul ass down the line. Every time.
Eric Wedge. The Adam LaRoche of managers.
You’re removing from the equation the percent chance of reaching base via strikeout versus the walk. It’s not the absolute outcome you’re suggesting.
There are two factors:
1) The different outcomes: 1) strikeout plus errant throw versus 2) walk.
2) The CHANCE that any given outcome would occur.
This is not a question of whether the ball got away or not. It did. You’re conveniently ignoring the fact that it did not get away very far. But never mind the distance of the ball for a minute. Yes, I agree there is a chance that an errant throw would occur. But I’m going to give Choo the benefit of the doubt (has he ever not hustled before?) in guessing that he thought he had a better chance to sell a walk than he did to have Teagarden make an errant throw.
If he was lazy, “scold” him. If he took a calculated risk—regardless of if he came up short—you don’t punish the guy. And back to my original point..he definitely swung. He knew it. At that moment, he thought he had a better chance to sell the walk than to reach first base. It didn’t work out. It’s a shame, but it’s not regrettable.
I think the power of the batter to “sell” a walk is being vastly overrated here. The ump didn’t start being an ump yesterday, and I can guarantee he has a much higher opinion of his own strike zone judgment than of any batter’s short of Barry Bonds.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
by Jay on Apr 9, 2009 8:04 AM EDT up reply actions
My thing is, even if it was a walk, a player should run down the line and see if he could take second, that is a live ball. Especially in a late and close situation. Especially with other runners on base. Walk or strikeout, the umpire’s call really didn’t matter- Choo’s only correct reaction to the 3-2 pitch in the dirt would be to sprint to first.
I agree with this 100%. From what I could see on TV, I don’t think Choo was trying to sell a walk. I think he thought that he had not swung at the last pitch, it was a ball, and he was getting a walk. When the third base umpire called it a strike, he stood, rather dumbfounded, and eventually abandoned the base path (making him out). He was never tagged, and the ball was not thrown to first. So, that’s the only way the final out of the game (albeit the 30th the Rangers had given us) was recorded.
As I’ve mentioned in the recap thread, I regard this as a mental error that cannot happen on a championship team.

He should have run

Doesn’t matter. You get your ass down the line and force the other team to throw you out.
'Z' button abuser.
Obviously, if the ball was just smothered or bounced a foot from home or something, the pendulum swings the other way. But here, Teagarden has to run, track the ball down, set himself, and throw to first. And Choo isn’t slow.

I’m sure you could find a way to blame his ADD.

Travis Hafner is overrated. Clarity is underrated. David Dellucci is David Dellucci.

It all seems much clearer in the morning
