By the way, Jeanmar Gomez pitched very well again last night. Akron has consistently very good pitching right now.

Jeanmar has been outstanding. He is getting the surge in development that Rondon did last year.
Also significant in the game was Zach Putnam’s first pen exposure AND first AA exposure. Two no hit, no walk innings with 2 K’s. I’m sure he and every other converted pitcher got the msg that success out of the pen means a faster ticket to Cleveland.
Lofgren goes today.

I sure do hope you’ve got that right! If ever there was a season, even a month, when performance could speed up promotion of a reliever by the Tribe, this might be it.

Way too soon, although Chisenhall’s relative youth separates him from the typical Hodges/Garko type of college prospect.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

In light of the changing assessments of the major league club, I’m probing to see if attitudes are also changing about our minor leaguers.
I for one am not reading anything into Chiz’s high error total, but it’s something I will monitor.

He has gotten nothing but praise by the coaches, beginning with Fryman, for his conversion to 3B and his future there. They seem to think he’ll be an above average defender there, for what its worth.
And I liked this line from today’s kinston.com article by David Hall:
“Chisenhall’s homer came on a 2-2 pitch from Myrtle Beach starter Cole Rohrbough in the fourth. The shot traveled so far that it chased a lone bird from its perch in a tree well beyond the scoreboard in right center field.”

I’m pretty chill with the errors. Errors mean he’s getting to the ball.
It seems reasonable that a guy learning a new position would make a bunch of errors, and 3B seems more prone to that than any other position, with how fast the ball comes at you. This is an aspect of the game where consistency really does need to be worked on and really is achievable.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Seems pretty obvious Chisenhall is being given a chance to make those errors on a good team to be learning a new position. Once he starts to play a more practiced third base, he might move up pretty quickly. He’s only had three games so far this season where he didn’t get a hit so his bat looks to be well ahead of the league already. BTW, changing players for a moment, McBride has that same distinction (of getting hits in every game save three) so it is clear he’s recovered from his injury.

McBride’s 23 game hit streak was snapped yesterday.

At the rate McBride, I would think he should be in Akron by early June, since he’s “old” for the Carolina League, and, “knock on wood,” he’s healthy. May his good health continue.

It seems to me that most 3B and SS prospects make a sizable to high amount of errors while going through the Minor Leagues, so I wouldn’t be overly concerned with Chisenhall’s error count. As Jay mentioned, Chisenhall did switch positions, so there’s bound to be a period where he needs to get comfortable and consistently execute there.
If Chisenhall was having a bunch of multiple error games and/or was making a bunch of “poor-decision” errors (like throwing the ball on plays where he has no chance of getting the out or booting easy ground balls), I’d likely be more concerned, but from what I’ve heard and read, these are just the “usual” errors that Minor Leaguers experience on their way up the ladder – by all accounts, Chisenhall should be fine there (fine = above-average), and his bat is looking impressive.
Question: Would the Indians consider moving Chisenhall up to AA Akron in the second half if he keeps this up – I know this is Chisenhall’s first full professional season and he’s young for the Carolina League, but would the Indians move him up if he continues this performance. My inclination would be “yes,” though likely not until July or August, especially since there is no notable 3B prospect playing at Akron (Romero is more of a super-utility type who can play all over the place and is not locked in at 3B), making it more likely in my mind that Chisenhall could get some AA time this season.
Just my 2 cents.

There’s certainly room to move him there, but there’s also no need to rush him. In situations like this, the organization often will let the player stay (or go) wherever the coaches are that they most want that player to work with.

Hello Jay,
Thanks for the info. – greatly appreciated!
I’m trying to recall, is hitting coach Jon Nunnally at AA Akron or AAA Columbus? It seems Nunnally is highly-regarded by those in the organization – I wonder if that would tip the scales in favor of moving Chisenhall up to AA Akron (presuming Nunnally is in Akron)?
Just my 2 cents.

Speaking of Hodges/Garko types, Cord Phelps is doing nicely. His stat line is sneaky low because he hasn’t had any balls fly over the fence.

I believe he’s leading the league in walks, too.

Phelps is doing nicely. Tim Fedroff was doing pretty well as well for most of the time so far, after a slow start, I believe, but he’s disappeared from the lineup – I presum Fedroff is injured? Any info. would be helpful – thank you.

From David Hall’s game notes (5/9):
Not still ill: K-Tribe center fielder Tim Fedroff, who is nursing a tight hamstring, hasn’t played since Tuesday. He is expected to start today.

I’ve already gone Chiz > Mills. Not ready to jump the Wegz yet.
by mcrose on May 11, 2009 11:09 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
My only complaint about Mills is his walks versus K’s. If he turns out to develop more power this won’t make a huge difference to his advancement but as he stands today it would benefit him to improve the OBP a bit if he is able. All three are so young that better judges than me would have to say which prospect is a better hitter; to me they all look like they could have a good future.

I don’t have any real complaint about Mills other than he’s not Jason Heyward, who the Braves snagged with the next pick.
I like Mills fine, but Chiz seems the superior defender who will stick at a skill position, which is huge. He also is adapting quicker to high-A pitching than Mills did last year, a year younger.
by mcrose on May 11, 2009 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Mills’ BA was slow to move up last year, but it was a result of crazy low BABIP (if my memory serves!). His extra base hits as a percentage of total hits were equally outsize, to the good side. I was never worried about him hitting. As far as position goes in comparing the two players, I agree Chisenhall plays a more valuable spot and my comments were directed soley at hitting.
What do you think of the site? I like that it shows game-by-game, hit charts and season age, as well as lots of stats one sometimes has to hunt multiple sites to find. I have no idea who built the site or aggregates the news but it looks like very complete site.

It’s good! Nice niche aggregator. I have to admit, tho, I do like self-aggregating (as opposed to self-aggrandizing), the morning ritual of going from site to site for local articles, etc. and to stay on milb.com for a while parsing the boxscores…
