I do sort of admire the way KW refuses to believe that prospects are anything. I have this image of him seeing every offer of good major leaguer for prospects as an absurd bargain. “Him? You’ll give me all that for him? Towers, you MADMAN! Just let me think for a moment.” /sets phone on desk, slams Bud chelada tallboy/ “It’s done.”

i want to know where their money is coming from. i have this theory that Hawk has some oil ranch down in texas and just gives truck loads of money to the whitesox so long as they let him still call the games.

Me too. Especially since I’m not sure many of those prospects have panned out.

Interesting … Poreda has been one of the names that surfaced in the last couple days … but Richard too huh?

One of Peavy’s teammates said he believes Peavy respects the White Sox for pursuing a trade for him, but may have reservations about playing for White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, according to the report.

I was just going to ask about them. I know very little to nothing about the ChiSox farm system.

If Beckham is included .. it would be the #1, #2 and #3 prospects in the Sox system … per Baseball America.

Going by what the White Sox fans are saying, it’s just about every good prospect they have in their farm system.

I know Poreda is well thought of but Clayton Richard is not that great. If Beckham is one of the PTBNL’s, my comment is retracted.
by NickFantana on May 21, 2009 11:19 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Beckham is rumored to be one of the PTBNL, apparently he can’t be traded for 1 year after being drafted or something, hence the PTBN tag.
Of course, Peavy still has to agree to be traded in the first place.

the inclusion of the soccer player, that is.

yeah, no way that it’s Beckham. That sounds like Padre-fan rumor to me.

I’d agree only because Ozzie reportedly LOVES Beckham.
But, it would fit the mold of a PTBNL.

i agree in that i don’t see where the padres pull the trigger without knowing exactly what they’re getting.

Peavy is earning $11 M this year (that’s an extra $3 M for his Cy Young), and then 12010:$15M, 2011:$16M, 2012:$17M, 2013:$22M club option ($4M buyout).
From Cot’s.

The other thing is that Peavy’s signed for 3 or 4 more years, so this isn’t just a short-term win now sort of thing. With all the money they’ve got coming off the books after this year & the young talent they have, this seems as much a move for the future as it is for today.

ya know, upon further examination, the Sox are about 2 games further out of first than I thought they were. This trade could actually help us if he beats up on the Royals and Tigers while not being awesome against us. Although, I don’t want to see his K total against us. Yikes.

Latest now is Poreda, Richard and two more pitchers.
by FallsTribeFan on May 21, 2009 12:15 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
even though Peavy won’t put up the same huge numbers in the AL, the Padres get fleeced in the proposed trade. To put it bluntly and harshly, Poreda is a lefty that throws hard, but Richard sucks, Getz sucks, Lillbridge sucks.

Agent Barry Axelrod told ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick that Peavy has a "strong preference’’ to stay in the National League. That preference, along with Peavy’s fondness for his new home in Southern California, could be impediments to a proposed deal that would send the pitcher to Chicago.
by Brick. on May 21, 2009 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
“If I had to make a bet on it, I would guess that Jake would say he’s not ready to take that step today,‘’ Axelrod said. "But he wouldn’t necessarily preclude it at any time in the future.

Translated: Of course we’ll do the deal if Chicago throws a bushel of money at us this week.
by odradek on May 21, 2009 12:52 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Peavy does not scare me. I wouldn’t mind Chicago spending huge dollars on him over the next four years. His numbers are really skewed by PETCO. In the AL, he’s a Javy Vazquez, not an ace.
The guy I want, and the guy who I don’t think is available, is Dan Haren.
by xrickx on May 21, 2009 1:53 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Peavy against the AL: 8-8, 3.29 ERA, 120 IP, 113/33 K/BB
Javier Vazquez in the AL: 54-46, 4.52 ERA, 826 IP, 747/227 BB
So, um, no.
by Voltaire on May 21, 2009 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You’re comparing 120IP to 826IP?
And some of your “against the AL” includes interleague play in an NL park (PETCO), so it still is skewed.
Look at Peavy’s line away from PETCO over the last three years:
Home: 341IP, 273H, 21HR, 2.72ERA
Away: 258IP, 229H, 32HR, 3.73ERA
In the AL, he’ll still log his innings, he’ll still get his strikeouts, but he’s not going to dominate.
by xrickx on May 21, 2009 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Those away numbers aren’t exactly terrible
by Roger Dorn on May 21, 2009 2:50 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
but instead of playing home games in an extreme pitcher’s park, he plays half his games in a near extreme hitters park. Plus, the AL/NL thing cannot be stressed enough.
by Ryan Kelsey on May 21, 2009 5:00 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
But as far as the White Sox are concerned its who he is replacing in the rotation that matters. Sure his numbers aren’t going to look as good as they did in Petco, but nobody’s numbers would look that good. Peavy has 28 PRC to Jose Contreras’ 6 thus far this season.
by hans on May 22, 2009 3:29 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It’s not a bad comparison. Vazquez was a very credible talent before coming to the AL, and he’s been ok since. Peavy will be okay too, but he’s not quite the unstopable force you’re making him out to be.
For the time being he’s still a Padre.

So I guess no one is ever really good enough to play in the AL.

by Roger Dorn on May 21, 2009 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I use up all of my hatred on the Yankees … I have none left for those other teams.
I also suppose that older fans (those who were Indians fans before the current division alignment) aren’t readily reminded of rivalries with 3 old AL West teams, which only leaves Detroit as an older foe. But most of that time, the Indians were so bad in the AL East that there was really no point in hating other teams.
I’ll add that I consider Detroit, KC, and Minnesota to also be small market teams, and thus less likely to dominate for any considerable period of time due to the financial constructs of the game. I guess I don’t see them as the same evil threat as New York.
The White Sox always feel like an also-ran to the Cubs in Chicago, even though they’ve had generally more ‘success’ that their crosstown neighbors.

Chicago White Sox world series championships: 2005 • 1917 • 1906
AL Pennants: 1900 • 1901 • 1906 • 1917 • 1919* • 1959 • 2005
Cleveland Indians: 1948 • 1920
AL Pennants: 1920 • 1948 • 1954 • 1995 • 1997
Take out 2005, and these teams are quite similar in their postseason futility.
