I do sort of admire the way KW refuses to believe that prospects are anything. I have this image of him seeing every offer of good major leaguer for prospects as an absurd bargain. “Him? You’ll give me all that for him? Towers, you MADMAN! Just let me think for a moment.” /sets phone on desk, slams Bud chelada tallboy/ “It’s done.”

i want to know where their money is coming from. i have this theory that Hawk has some oil ranch down in texas and just gives truck loads of money to the whitesox so long as they let him still call the games.

I think its funny he might be the only Bud Chelada tallboy drinker out there.

Interesting … Poreda has been one of the names that surfaced in the last couple days … but Richard too huh?
I was just going to ask about them. I know very little to nothing about the ChiSox farm system.
I just wanted to believe.
If Beckham is included .. it would be the #1, #2 and #3 prospects in the Sox system … per Baseball America.

Going by what the White Sox fans are saying, it’s just about every good prospect they have in their farm system.
I know Poreda is well thought of but Clayton Richard is not that great. If Beckham is one of the PTBNL’s, my comment is retracted.

Beckham is rumored to be one of the PTBNL, apparently he can’t be traded for 1 year after being drafted or something, hence the PTBN tag.
Of course, Peavy still has to agree to be traded in the first place.
yeah, no way that it’s Beckham. That sounds like Padre-fan rumor to me.

I’d agree only because Ozzie reportedly LOVES Beckham.
But, it would fit the mold of a PTBNL.

Peavy is earning $11 M this year (that’s an extra $3 M for his Cy Young), and then 12010:$15M, 2011:$16M, 2012:$17M, 2013:$22M club option ($4M buyout).
From Cot’s.
and Rondon will be better than Peavy by next year anyway. Right? Please?

so, i work with a number of whitesox fans. this is already unbearable. you all should have to see the ridiculous grins on all their faces. on top of that, most of my in-laws are whitesox fans.
while he’s still good, he’s not nearly as good as he is when he’s pitching in the best pitcher’s park in baseball. 4.6 ERA with the Chi Sox, book it!
is it possible to remove the term “book it” from use on this site. It reaks of cleveland.com. Personal pet peave of mine, no offense ASP.

Could be worse. My in-laws are Steelers fans.

The White Sox are last in the AL in runs scored; I’m not sure KW is addressing the right need here.
Then again, misunderstimate KW at your own peril.
I respect him for running a team like I do my fantasy team.
And I think I am actually being sincere.

The other thing is that Peavy’s signed for 3 or 4 more years, so this isn’t just a short-term win now sort of thing. With all the money they’ve got coming off the books after this year & the young talent they have, this seems as much a move for the future as it is for today.
*sigh*

I love Peavy, how am I supposed to root for him now?
The # of wins needed to win this division just went up by a couple.
FE WEE
Lofgren has given up 1 home run in 34 innings. He has yet to surrender a hit to a left-handed batter.
Weglarz! has an OPS of 1200 through 56 ABs in May.
My new favorite baseball team is the Akron Aeros.

I need to figure out how to pronounce Jeanmar. I am going to assume it’s like any other Spanish pronunciation.
Hay-on-mar
Of course, otherwise it would be spelled Jheanmar.

He’s pitching right now, and audio is available free. Can’t someone get on and figure this out?
by dgcambridge on May 21, 2009 12:54 PM EDT up reply actions
according to Trenton announcer, “yahn-mar”
by cleveland teamer on May 21, 2009 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions
Dorn’s got it right then. It’s just HEY-ahn-mar sped up.
Ridiculous to me that announcers can’t learn Spanish pronunciation. The language is phonetic for cryin out loud.

even though Peavy won’t put up the same huge numbers in the AL, the Padres get fleeced in the proposed trade. To put it bluntly and harshly, Poreda is a lefty that throws hard, but Richard sucks, Getz sucks, Lillbridge sucks.
Someday, when Hafner is healthy and hitting again, we won’t regret not having the payroll space to make this sort of trade.

Peavy does not scare me. I wouldn’t mind Chicago spending huge dollars on him over the next four years. His numbers are really skewed by PETCO. In the AL, he’s a Javy Vazquez, not an ace.
The guy I want, and the guy who I don’t think is available, is Dan Haren.
Peavy against the AL: 8-8, 3.29 ERA, 120 IP, 113/33 K/BB
Javier Vazquez in the AL: 54-46, 4.52 ERA, 826 IP, 747/227 BB
So, um, no.
You’re comparing 120IP to 826IP?
And some of your “against the AL” includes interleague play in an NL park (PETCO), so it still is skewed.
Look at Peavy’s line away from PETCO over the last three years:
Home: 341IP, 273H, 21HR, 2.72ERA
Away: 258IP, 229H, 32HR, 3.73ERA
In the AL, he’ll still log his innings, he’ll still get his strikeouts, but he’s not going to dominate.
but instead of playing home games in an extreme pitcher’s park, he plays half his games in a near extreme hitters park. Plus, the AL/NL thing cannot be stressed enough.
I really have a hard time figuring out these days which team I dislike the most; Minnesota, Chicago, or Detroit
I’m so ambivalent this year that I can’t bring myself to hate any of them

I use up all of my hatred on the Yankees … I have none left for those other teams.
I also suppose that older fans (those who were Indians fans before the current division alignment) aren’t readily reminded of rivalries with 3 old AL West teams, which only leaves Detroit as an older foe. But most of that time, the Indians were so bad in the AL East that there was really no point in hating other teams.
I’ll add that I consider Detroit, KC, and Minnesota to also be small market teams, and thus less likely to dominate for any considerable period of time due to the financial constructs of the game. I guess I don’t see them as the same evil threat as New York.
The White Sox always feel like an also-ran to the Cubs in Chicago, even though they’ve had generally more ‘success’ that their crosstown neighbors.

Kenny Williams builds his team in the manner of a blogger (maybe even a link-aggregator) trained by Baseball America.

Chicago White Sox world series championships: 2005 • 1917 • 1906
AL Pennants: 1900 • 1901 • 1906 • 1917 • 1919* • 1959 • 2005
Cleveland Indians: 1948 • 1920
AL Pennants: 1920 • 1948 • 1954 • 1995 • 1997
Take out 2005, and these teams are quite similar in their postseason futility.

Sadly though, Chicago has many more great bars in which one can contemplate this futility. That’s why we need a WS championship and more bars, both.
Eh, bars are bars. If you find a couple you like, why do you need 1000’s of them? While I certainly like some cities better than others, I find you can do most anything you’d want to do in any reasonably sized American city.
