Kerry Wood did WHAT???!!??

The first of many long conversations with Sam Levin, born yesterday at 3:50 p.m. As far as he knows so far, the Indians have never lost, and the Cavs have never won.

It is the absolute best. And that thing people always say, about it passing way too quickly, well they’re right! So enjoy every minute (except maybe the one where he eventually bangs the car into the garage door at age sixteen).

Congrats Jay – enjoy!

My son will be 14 later this year. I remember two particular Indians related things from when he was born and the first few months. The Ken Hill trade went down the day after he was born and going in to his room and picking him up and holding him after Lofton scored from second on the wild pitch in Game 6 of the ALCS.

Here’s hoping you have similar moments with Sam this season.

New babies are great for watching late TV. When my son was born in August (2001) I saw most of every west coast baseball and footall game for months.

Congratulations to you and many condolences to Sam for his induction into the Indians Cult of Despair. My 9 year old was born on the day a Yankee pitched a perfect game, named after the current President of the Texas Rangers (who was inducted into the Hall of Fame a few days later) and takes Indians losses harder than I do.

by FredOx on May 29, 2009 9:25 AM EDT up reply actions

Before Sam:

Tm	W	L	W-L%	GB	RS	RA	pythW-L%
DET	21	16	.568	--	205	170	.585
KCR	21	18	.538 1.0	179	160	.551
MIN	18	22	.450 4.5	191	213	.450
CHW	16	22	.421 5.5	150	181	.415
CLE	14	26	.350 8.5	208	231	.452

After Sam:

Tm	W	L	W-L%	GB	RS	RA	pythW-L%
CLE	7	2	.778	--	55	40	.642
MIN	6	3	.667 1.0	62	29	.801
CHW	5	3	.625 1.5	39	36	.537
DET	5	4	.556 2.0	40	31	.615
KCR	2	6	.250 4.5	21	48	.181

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

by Jay on May 29, 2009 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Runs scored per game: 5.2 before, 6.1 after
Runs allowed per game: 5.8 before, 4.4 after
Pythagorean win percentage: .452 before, .642 after
Pythagorean efficiency: -.102 before, +.136 after

In short, before we played like a team with 73-win talent and bad luck, now we play like a team 104-win talent and good luck.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

by Jay on May 29, 2009 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Plus, he suppresses Minnesota’s luck, which is difficult to do.

by odradek on May 30, 2009 10:13 AM EDT up reply actions

"Lotta heart in Cleveland." - Ian Hunter

by Denver Tribe Fan on May 29, 2009 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Sam was born a week ago. 40 weeks before that was August 15, 2008. The Indians won at a 104 win pace between 8/15 and the end of the 2008 season.

by FredOx on May 29, 2009 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions

So extrapolating that forward, we’re looking at 92 or 93 wins.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
