Chief Wahoo in the news
Not sure how most people here feel about this. It's usually a topic I try to avoid since it can easily turn political (which would be anti TOS), but I have always been embarrassed of the Chief. I would be happy if this was another step in a gradual moving away from using it as the team's logo. Besides, the retro C is far superior anyway.

This sucks.
And the 09 hats are ugly btw

I would say both of them are ugly. I haven’t seen the other teams’ versions, but I imagine most of their stars and stripes version are ugly too. It’s a preposterous idea.

I agree… I fail to see the point of any stars and stripes wear.

I actually kinda like them. At least they go with our color scheme. Can’t imagine how awful these will look with like, the Rockies.

We play the A’s the day those will be worn. That should clash pretty well.

All the caps are red, so none of them are going to clash particularly. The only cap I find to be truly horrible is the Marlins:

My sentiments are similar to Joe’s. I personally avoid wearing any Tribe apparel that features Chief Wahoo. And consider the fact that the team has not won the WS since adopting this incarnation of the Chief….perhaps we suffer not from the Curse of Rocky Colavito, but the Curse of Chief Wahoo?
A couple years ago in a previous LGT thread, I suggested changing the logo to be just the Chief’s feather. That accomplishes several things:
1. Looks sort of like the letter I (you know, for “Indians”).
2. Maintains a small link to the past for traditionalists (marketing department: “The Chief has finally retired, but he’s left us his feather as a reminder of the Tribe’s achievements over the years, blah blah etc.”), and does not require a full makeover of the color scheme, uniforms, etc.
3. By removing a caricature that, rightly or wrongly, is perceived by many to be demeaning to Native Americans, it likely eliminates the source of the vast majority of complaints that the team is politically incorrect or ethnically insensitive.
4. New logo==new merchandise sales!
We’re in the twenty-first century now; it’s time to set aside this reminder of a half-century of futility and move on.
by Jackdaw on May 21, 2009 7:54 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
You know, the feather is an interesting compromise …
For what it’s worth, I’ve never been terribly bothered by Wahoo …
But, I will say this … if the Indians suddenly announced the weekend alternate unis were going to be the full-time home unis … minus Wahoo on the sleeve … I’d be all for it.
Those weekend unis are the best the team has worn in a long time … and among the classiest in the majors.

I remember this suggestion, actually. I love it from a practical standpoint. The problem is that using a feather is resorting to caricature, too.
A lot of people will still be upset, and perhaps rightfully so, as long as the team’s name remains “Indians.” Chief Wahoo is the most egregious insult, but not the only one. Still, if they did this, I’d be thrilled.

Is it caricature to use an object from the ceremony/mythology of many native american tribes?
by Voltaire on May 22, 2009 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think so. I live near a reservation and also near a college — look at me with my stereotypes — so when in conversation someone who’s not present is described as “Indian,” it’s common to hear the off-color expression: “Dot or feather?” (Meaning: “South Asian or Native American?”)
None of the people being talked about ever actually have dots or feathers on their heads. To me that’s still a bit of a caricature.

By this line of argument, the USC Trojan is a caricature. You know, Greeks today don’t wear Corinthian helmets or togas.

The USC Trojan is a caricature.
There’s also not a group of people around today, who still have real lives and feelings and such, who are called Trojans. Though they might be loosely based on a historical situation, Trojans are, functionally speaking, as mythological as the sirens in the Odyssey.
Indians, on the other hand, are actual human beings. I know a lot of them. Not all of them care about Chief Wahoo. But the ones who do care for very sincere reasons.
So sure, you can compare them to Trojans, who’ve been mythologized to the point where their representatives in our minds are all kings and warriors and demigods, because the only thing we know about them comes from the story we’ve been telling ourselves. I don’t think we should hope for Indians to end up in that category.

I am all for Chief Wahoo, I wish they’d bring the old giant one that hung on municipal stadium to the Jake.
But I can see the point when you pair it with the flag like that. That seems like they’re pushing it.
The C hat is awful though. If anything they should have used the script “I”.

The team selected Indians to represent themselves as an honor to native Americans. This is an image of Chief Pontiac, which could serve as our new logo. It seems very inoffensive to me.
by elsandito on May 22, 2009 12:32 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
This is a myth that the team has consciously perpetuated. But it’s a ridiculous statement, akin to saying the Detroit team selected tigers to represent themselves as an honor to tigers. I’m sure the tigers are very grateful for the honor, because I never hear them protest.
There’s an overview of roughly how the naming went down in this 1998 article from Sociology of Sport Journal: An Act of Honor or Exploitation? by Ellen Staurowski
It’s a long and fairly unrewarding read, so scroll about 1/3 of the way down to the section called “Invisible and Unheard Referents – The Case of the Cleveland Indians.”
by still ill on May 22, 2009 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
“The title of Indians was their [baseball writers] choice, it having been one of the names applied to the old National league club of Cleveland many years ago”
This statement within the article seems to provide the closest thing we have in ascertaining the reason that the writers selected Indians as the name to replace the Naps. We don’t have records telling why the old National league club of Cleveland selected the Indians name.
While it’s true that Anaheim didn’t select Angels to honor angels, angels are not an homogenous human grouping. Native Americans, on the other hand, are such a grouping. You wouldn’t name a team the Cleveland Mormons because Mormons haven’t been known to battle fiercely. Native Americans had a history of fighting to the death. I can see why many people consider it complimentary in having such competitive qualities.
I don’t believe people object to the name Indians as much as the Chief Wahoo cartoon. I would prefer to retain an Indian head image that is inoffensive rather than resorting to a letter or picture of a feather.
by elsandito on May 22, 2009 6:59 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
there’s a lot more to native american history than their glorious and noble deaths at the hands of americans and europeans.

Despite Jay’s warning below, I wanted to thank you for linking that article; for the most part, I’ve only been familiar with Terry Pluto’s account of the naming (in “Our Tribe,” I believe). As a defender of the Indians’ name, I appreciate understanding the arguments of those who advocate its elimination.

Whether the current FO actual acknowledges or denies anything, there has been a concerted effort over the past few years to make the chief less prominent in the “Indians universe”.
I was not at spring training, but I recall somebody mentioning that the script I is the more prominent logo along with the Indians name logo. I’d be curious to find out if the chief shows up anywhere at all.
The alternate hats over the past few years. First the script I, and then this year the block C. The few games I have seen on TV, they have not worn the wahoo hats at all. I do still note that he shows up on the batting helmets though. I suspect this will be phased out in the next year or two as well.
In addition, look the indians mlb.com website, the wahoo is still there, but the script I shares the background equally. And the Indians name logo is the focus on the front page, not the wahoo.
If I had to guess, the wahoo may end up just being adorned to the uniform or not at all within a decade.
The club is making an effort to minimize, reduce, etc. But I also applaud them for not announcing these changes either. They are doing it slowly and quietly. A public announcement would just start another firestorm.

I agree completely. At some point, they are going to have announce a complete phaseout—assuming that’s their plan, which I believe it is—and the slow introduction of the various alternates and the retro jerseys will make it more acceptable to the fans. We’ve been under attack for so long about it that people have become uber-sensitive about it.

The block C is kind of a big deal. It dates back to the start of the franchise — like, the 1900-ish start of the franchise. And as far as I can tell, it’s unique among big-league clubs. I wish they’d outline in white or silver, though. It’s a little anemic looking red-on-blue.

I could find no permanent Wahoo logos anywhere. Every logo built into the structures (buildings, scoreboards, signs) was the Script I. The Reds logo is everywhere, too, and the Script I is always present as its equivalent
Wahoo was in evidence everywhere, mainly on items for sale. One shop even had a bobblehead of the original, more offensive Wahoo. The Chief also appeared regularly on the large video screen. But it seems obvious that the complex itself is Wahoo-free.

I’m fine with ending the discussion, but I think some of the material in this thread — namely discussions regarding merchandise and the decor in Goodyear — is just as relevant to baseball as the sale of the naming rights to a ballpark or a change in ticket pricing. These things say something about how the team is run and how the front office plans for the future, and they certainly impact revenue and public relations.
That said… everything I have posted in this thread has been 100% about politics. My bad. It’s hard to avoid it coming up when we all support a baseball team whose logo can’t really even be discussed apolitically.
At least we didn’t get into why the stars and stripes hats are so distasteful, right?
