Laffey, Reyes to DL, Sowers & Rundles called up
Perez and Sipp must still have some work to do in Columbus because Rundles gets the call for the pen.

If Sowers doesn’t find a way to put up quality starts over the next month (presumably how long he’ll be up at least) does he really have a future here?

This is insane… give some else a shot. Sowers has had three years…. I would rather see them give someone with a future a shot… Infact I would rather have Ohka or Sarloss at this point. When Laffey gets back our rotation shoul look like this:
Lee
Carmona
Laffey
Pavano
Huff
This actually gives me a glimmer of hope.. not for this year but probably next.. Throw Rondon in the mix and you got something…. Trade Derosa or Shoppach and you might get even another legit young arm.
Laffey could be gone for a while. Obliques—if that’s the problem—can take a while to heal. Will Pavano be traded? Jake comes back maybe for the last two months of the season. You won’t get much in the way of arms for either DeRosa or Shoppach. Eventually doesn’t Sowers have to become a league-average pitcher?
This would be a good time for Huff to begin to establish himself.

I just realized what a genius move it would look like right now if Shapiro had traded Sowers after ’06 for.. well, anything.

Laffey
If you had that rotation and Huff and Sarloos in AAA at the start of the ’10 season, would you be happy?

I dunno, after Huff is there really a guy that we can say “yeah, he looks like he could help pretty quickly”? I guess Rondon, but I see that more for ’11 if anything.

I could definitely see scenarios in which Rondon and Gomez begin 2010 as real options as the seventh/eighth starters. I think you’re more likely to start the season with Huff in the bigs, SLewis as sixth (knocking on wood), and Pavano cashing in elsewhere.

Looks like Rondon at least is a real option now:
. I think we are looking at it now from a more global perspective. By no means is he not a bullpen option. I think what he is now is just an option as a major league pitcher. Hector will continue his development, and we could see him at some point this year or next year, it is difficult to say.

Looks like a 1004 OPS through 102 plate appearances now.

This is really about the best situation we could have hoped for, he passes waivers plays a full season in AAA and either shows something and makes things interesting or doesn’t and who cares he’s not hurting our twenty five or forty man roster.
or he could have done this last year in the majors – allowing us to keep Stevens Gaub and Archer.

how would he have done that without playing

Wedge: Who’s this new kid from Columbus? The fat one over there.
Datz: They say his name is Marty Agent.
Wedge: He looks familiar. I have a bad feeling about him.

I don’t know. Andy is hitting everything and that could be an indication that he’s above the competition.
It could also just mean a lot of stuff’s falling in. I don’t deny that this is a great outcome but I’d be much happier if Marte was closer to Santana’s line. He’s got to do something besides just put the ball in play, i.e. walk.
Two injuries in a game is awful, especially with the struggles we’ve had getting outs….
BUT, c’mon, we lost Reyes, who has not been good (yes, I was hopeful), and Laffey from the pen. Laffey’s contribution was absolutely key at the time….but his future is in the rotation, and we need our actual relievers to turn it around anyway.
Just saying, not the most tragic injuries that we could have seen. Our chances are about the same. (too early to give up!)
Mrs. drerikbrady suggested that Laffey’s oblique problem may be from throwing up over our current record.
