Game 51: Yankees 10, Indians 5
At this point, Fausto Carmona needs to go to AAA, but I don't know if the Indians can scrounge up a starter to take his spot. He's being hit much too hard for a pitcher with his stuff. In the second inning he served up two home runs, then in the fourth, gave up another five runs, with the help of the defense behind him. But even with the errors, if he had limited the damage to a couple of runs, he could have kept the Indians in the game; the offense would eventually score three runs off CC Sabathia.
Victor Martinez left the game in the top of the second after fouling a pitch off his knee. After taking a good five minutes to get to his feet, he finished the at-bat, but could put no weight on his left foot, and after hitting a grounder to second, could only hobble half-way down the first base line. Needless to say, he didn't come out the next inning to catch. He didn't break anything, but I don't think he'll be playing, to say nothing of catching, for a while. I'd expect the Indians to recall either Chris Gimenez or Wyatt Toregas in time for tomorrow's game.
The good news from tonight's game was that the Indians didn't have to use any middle relievers, for Tomo Ohka took over for Carmona in the fifth and finished the game. Sure, he allowed three runs in those five innings, but his main objective was to soak up innings. Now, if tomorrow's game is within reach, Eric Wedge will have a full complement of relievers to choose from.
Next Up: Phil Hughes vs. Carl Pavano, 12:40 PM (on TBS).

Dude…
Is it just me or are people getting injured left and right
Victor
Hafner
Grady
Smith
Miller
Lewis
Laffey
Reyes
That’s three starting pitchers, two bullpen arms, one of your top hitters, and your team mvp. With all the talk about firing Wedge/Shapiro I’m surprised no one’s seriously suggested firing our strength training coach/trainer/whoever’s in charge of players getting hurt.
I don’t have the hard numbers to back this up, but it seems like every year we unexpected;y fall apart its because of a massive surge in injuries.

Will Carroll talks about how good the Indians’ training staff is. Go back a few years and look how few pitchers the Indians used (2005?). Some of this is the result of age (get used to it) and some of it is just Cleveland being Cleveland.
Also, three of these guys were question marks coming into the season: Miller, Hafner and Reyes. Everyone had their fingers crossed, and guess what? They came up lame.
I also felt like Grady was a ticking clock, only because of all the years, the most I saw was a sprained ankle.
And I wouldn’t classify Victor with those guys, there’s nothing you can do when a ball bounces off your knee cap after rocketing off your bat at around 100mph.

Needless to say, this has been a really crappy night for Cleveland sports.

That’s not fangraph, that’s game enthusiasm meter for Cleveland.

If anyone is up this late (1:34am) there is a college baseball game that is in the 24th innning. Some reliever has pitched 13 shutout innings. I believe Texas is the #1 team in the nation.
Oh wow. I believe a good net friend and his son are at this very game. No wonder he hasn’t been on this evening.

My friend Tom’s account of the game from IRC last night. Edited for content and brevity.
[Tom]: Holy f**k
[Chris]: Did you stick with that game all the way, Tom?
[Tom]: Yep. We almost left after the 21st.
[Tom]: We got about halfway around the stands, and Justin said, “I think we should stay.” He was the one who wanted to leave.
[Tom]: Longest game in NCAA baseball history.
[Chris]: I would need a lot of beer. I’d go broke just on beer.
[Tom]: I don’t think they sell beer there
[Chris]: Damn. That is harsh.
[Tom]: That’s what I was thinking.
[Chris]: Look I know I’m in the minority here, but 9 innings is f***ing too much. That’s almost THREE TIMES that.
[Tom]: I was in heaven, myself. Not for the length as much as the pitching between the, say, 8th and 19th innings.
[Tom]: UT’s closer came in in the 7th. He didn’t give up a hit until the 19th. He pitched two innings yesterday, (and) he pitched 13 tonight … or last night and this morning. 169 pitches.
[Tom]: I don’t know what his arm is made of, but 12 innings of no-hit ball is pretty amazing. And the pitcher for BC was almost matching it.
[Vic]: I’ll bet the Brewers are giving him a look.
[Tom]: Heh.
[Tom]: It looked like UT was gonna run away with it in the second inning. There was a two-run homer, and they got a few more people on base. Then they didn’t score for the next 23 innings.
[Tom]: There was a 21st inning stretch. Someone asked Austin Wood (the closer) if he was going to take credit for a no-hitter. He said no, ‘cause he gave up two hits in 13 innings.
[Tom]: The Texas fans were as hilarious as usual. At one point, there was a weird foul ball call. Augie Garrido, UT’s coach, came out to argue with the umpires, and one of the fans in our section yelled out “Go on Augie! Kick some rubber pellets on him!”
[Tom]: (UT’s stadium has an artificial surface that is covered with little rubber pellets that kind of simulate dirt.)
[Tom]: Also, very early on, maybe in the first inning, there was a foul pop that bounced off a big foam hand (like a “we’re #1” hand, except this makes the “hook ’em” horns sign). A different guy in our section yells to him, “Use two hands!”

My ESPNU isn’t showing it.

Not just 13 shutout innings, but the first (I believe) 12 1/3 innings were hit less. Ended up with just two hits allowed in the 13 innings. 169 pitches thrown.

Do the Indians doctors think Hafner is a crybaby and/or are they totally mismanaging him?
They say they told him to expect soreness this year; that makes it sound like they think he should suck it up and play through the pain.
The only problem is...
That It’s Phil Hughes pitching tomorrow for the Yanks, Joba comes monday
Lastoria says Giminez was a late scratch from the Columbus lineup yesterday — BEFORE news of Victor’s injury, and wonders if a catching trade is in the works.

“Catching trade” as in, “trade of one of our catchers.” Specifically, he speculates that it’s Shoppach.

We’re going to trade Shoppach the day after Victor gets banged up and leaves the game?
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
Potentially meaningful news: Giminez was scratched last night even before Victor got hurt.
Pure Lastorulation: We’re trading Shoppach.
