On this third pitch, he felt a pop and stepped off the mound. Head athletic trainer Lonnie Soloff and manager Eric Wedge rushed out and, after a short chat, Betancourt walked off the field.

“I knew I had to stop pitching right away,” Betancourt said.

For a second I though the sign in the bottom right corner said “Indians No. 1”

by Ryan on Jun 1, 2009 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions

The Indians are #1 in the following categories:

  1. HBP
  2. R allowed
  3. ER allowed
  4. BB allowed
  5. Losses

We’re only #2 in guys on the DL, but if we can keep up our lead in HBP, there’s still hope.

Also of note, Reyes’ season appears to be over …

Anthony Reyes will visit Dr. Lewis Yocum in California on Tuesday to get a second opinion on his right elbow, but it’s pretty much a certainty that Reyes will have an ulnar nerve transposition performed on the elbow, ending his ’09 season. The recovery from such a procedure is four to six months. “It sucks,” Reyes said. “I worked my butt off this offseason.”

Of course we retain full rights to Reyes for another three seasons. He’ll be arbitration-eligible for 2010, but given his meager achievements, he may not even get $1 million. Reyes has 17 quality starts in 52 tries, and a 5.12 career ERA over 293 innings. Those numbers will all put him near the bottom of the barrel in terms of first-year arbitration cases.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

by Jay on May 31, 2009 5:54 PM EDT reply actions

Although actually, I wonder if they don’t just try to outright him.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

by Jay on May 31, 2009 5:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I was going to ask if that was the alternative. As far as silver linings go, having Reyes on the team for 3 more years is a lot more cloud than silver.

Il faut d'abord durer.

Bottom line, you wouldn’t mind having him as a cheap rotation option for 2010.

I think we’ve all internalized the lesson about rotation options over the last two months.

I didn’t count them out until the magic number was like 1 or something. I am not really sure if I have all the way counted them out I have just decided I will be happier with a lot less at this point. Who knows? .500 may win this division. It’s that awful.

Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?

by ClemsonGirl on Jun 1, 2009 11:26 AM EDT up reply actions

For me, I remember the exact moment I thought last season was over. It was either the last game of June or the first game of July against the White Sox when we hit a home run in extra innings to take the lead, only to blow the game.

I still have hope this season. As silly as it sounds, I think you have to let the interleague games play out. I remember dominating interleague in 2007, and getting dominated in 2006 and 2008. Winning the extra inning game last Sunday would have been nice.

As you say, .500 may win this division.

"The only thing I thought is we really need a hit to win, so don’t try too hard," Peralta said. "I figured they would pitch inside. That’s where it was, so I just swung."
"I saw Wedge take off the bunt sign and saw what Asdrubal was doing and thought, ‘Good luck to you,’ " Peralta said.

As long as it doesn’t come with a ten-year contract.

by danvail on Jun 1, 2009 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions

So, Ben Francisco has been pretty decent this past month. If he can put together a similar month, you might even call him an asset.

I’ll be interested to see what kind of second half he is capable of, since he stunk so badly last year.

by Toxicadam on May 31, 2009 9:51 PM EDT reply actions

I still think he’s an asset. Good fastball hitter, speed, a capable stopgap centerfielder… that’s a damn good fourth outfielder as long as he’s cheap. Problem is, that’s only true for another year or so.

Though I look right at home, I still feel like an exile

by Manhattan Tribe Fan on May 31, 2009 10:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Francisco shouldn’t immediately become expensive with arbitration. He’ll definitely get a raise, but not necessarily a prohibitive one right away.

by APV on May 31, 2009 10:16 PM EDT up reply actions

It also seems like he’s getting better against off-speed stuff, or at least curveballs. It’s just an observation, but that is something that has stood out to me over the past couple weeks.

by jakesinger777 on May 31, 2009 11:16 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t know that he’s getting better. He’s been a streaky hitter and appears to be in a hot streak. He might soon return to suckdom.

by odradek on Jun 1, 2009 12:30 AM EDT up reply actions

I like him a lot, but he does have that appearance of a streaky hitter, which is a bummer because he can only break out of slumps by riding them out. The question is if the pros outweigh the cons. At his current price, yes. Two years from now.. ???

"I gotta be honest, I dunno much about the climate in Japan." - Matt Underwood

by USSChoo on Jun 1, 2009 3:52 AM EDT up reply actions

All major league hitters are streaky, or appear to be, it’s just a question of degrees.

I don’t think we should rule out the possibility that Ben will continue to develop as a hitter. Limited ceiling, yes, but it is higher than his current level.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

by Jay on Jun 1, 2009 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, that’s fair. I still like his approach at the plate, I feel like he’s got a nice level swing and can often be on the losing end of the “hard hit ball right at so and so” syndrome.

And even though I wasn’t here last year, I was saying I would have been devastated if he was traded in the offseason over Gutz. I still feel that way.

"I gotta be honest, I dunno much about the climate in Japan." - Matt Underwood

by USSChoo on Jun 1, 2009 6:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, that’s just crazy. The “hard hit ball right at so and so” syndrome is something a hitter would like to have. Hitting a lot of line drives can’t possibly work against a hitter for very long.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
