soooo…is he pitching around Lind, too?

On GameDay, that pitch looks like it’s right in the middle of the plate, about belt-high.
Sometimes, I just like to b****.
How did Peralta not get to that?
"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.
That rookie has walked 60 guys in 185 minor league innings. Not a bad rate, but not good, either. Today, of course, he walked none. If the Indians would have been patient, Cecil wouldn’t have lasted five innings.
My best friend’s name is Troy Halladay.

Our pitches, coming into today’s game, ranked from highest leverage usage to lowest (at time of entering game):
Jensen Lewis: 2.42
Tony Sipp: 1.67
Kerry Wood: 1.57
R. Betancourt: 1.07
J. Smith: 1.06
R. Perez: 0.85
V. Chulk: 0.60
M. Kobayashi: 0.32
Wedge has no clue. If Lewis is the guy to get you out of the fire, then use him to put out the fire. This two-batter Chulk experiment is bullshit.
Crap, I’m going back to the Champions League

by new zealand tribe fan on May 5, 2009 3:13 PM EDT reply actions
Not that Lewis and Chulk have pitched well, but the decision to bring in Perez to protect a lead is simply baffling.
I guess the big question here is, who the hell else do we bring in? I don’t want them to overwork Sipp this early in the season, but the rest of our bullpen is total shit right now.
Wedge was trying the L-L matchup and it backfired because Perez is completely lost out there.
Sometimes, I just like to b****.
That’s the thing. I understand playing the matchup, but he simply cannot get anybody out. Let him figure it out in a meaningless game or send him to the minors.
And as Danimal mentions below, if you are using Sipp now, why not to start the inning?
yep

I hate always playing the second-guessing game, but with lefties coming up to start the inning and Sipp in the pen and Perez scuffling so badly right now, how do you not try Sipp before Perez?

why not? our relievers have just done so
by oaksterdam on May 5, 2009 3:24 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
I know it’s hard to blame the manager for every reliever sucking. But starting the inning with Perez was a massive mistake. Wedge needs to realize that Raffy P is the worst pitcher on the team right now
i agree. it is on the relievers that they are sucking, but as the manager you need to know who to use and who NOT to use. wedge just doesn’t seem to get that.
actually, maybe it has to do with his “long season, everything averages out” philosophy. relievers don’t get the kind of playing time for that to work (small sample size, etc.). he has to go with who is hot and stay away from who is not (everyone).
Oh for Adam Miller

One month into the season, pitchers and ERAs:
15.19 – Perez
7.20 – Wood
7.11 – Smith
5.93 – Lewis
5.79 – Jackson
4.15 – Masa
3.86 – Sipp
3.75 – Chulk
That, my friends, is a historically bad bullpen.
7.46 – Pavano
6.11 – Carmona
6.84 – Reyes
4.09 -Laffey
3.92 – Lee
That, my friends, is a rotation that forces you to use a pretty bad bullpen.

The worst part is, I was thinking during the first 7th inning rally, that it was SO nice to see them hitting the ball well but also having a fair bit of luck, thinking maybe they were going to get hot.
Wait a second… I was just reading my trusty Annual and it says that Perez had a much-improved second-half with a soaring K rate in 2008. He had proven that he was the man for many high-leverage innings for years to come.
What idiot wrote that…

The bullpen is obscuring how totally crap our rotation is. I mean, this game thread was practically giddy with a barely quality start today.
Reyes pitched really well. He gave up a couple cheap hits in his worst inning, and a few long flyouts early. However, he pitched well enough for the win, and that kind of performance we should take every time from him
Right, but that’s not the point. We’re all desperate for anything from our starters, so a decent start is like a perfect game. I mean, we need starters getting to the eighth inning. We need length.

I can picture Shapiro in a darkened office, head in his hands, a Collins glass full of Scotch & rocks sweating on the desk next to him, wondering how he got to this particular moment in his career.
Antonetti is slumped in a chair on the other side of the room staring blankly into space. Whenever he tries to speak Shapiro hisses “Don’t…..just…..don’t.”
The phone rings. They both glare at it but neither answers.
