Luis Vizcaino is a (minor league) Indian!!!!
A few bits of information:
The Cubs released him Monday so he is probably working for minimum.
He has pitched less than 4 innings this year and last pitched in a game on April 21st.
The roster already stands at 40, which roster spot would he take if this is true?

My senior prom date’s dad is President of Gaylord. I just sent an e-mail to her asking for info. Will post anything I hear.
You’re going to the senior prom?
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Common misconception about high schoolers attending a single-sex school: that we didn’t encounter and sometimes even “date” in high school
But where would you meet them? The Taco Bell Parking lot?**
**Taco Bell was, in fact, one of the places I might go to meet girls

Not every all-male high school has associated all-girl (or “mostly-girl”) schools to provide them with dates…

Nice — I’ll have to tell my mom not to chuck that one.
Where do you get a $12 haircut in Manhattan? Even that barber shop at Astor Place charges more than that.

A Dominican barbershop on Amsterdam. They raised their prices to $15 this year, though. I was disappointed, but they’re my boys.

More ex-Cubs. Have we reached the ex-Cub quota yet? Why did Chicago release Vizcaino anyway? He only pitched 3.2 innings (2 H, 3 K, 0 BB) in 4 appearances before the DFA.
I’m looking at the Chicago papers and trying to figure that out. There’s no mention of injury or anything. It seems pretty clear that Pinella just wasn’t interested, and they would rather go with younger guys like Samardzija. Vizcaino came over from Colorado with a $3.5 M price tag. His spring training stats were sparse and mediocre, but not horrible. Who knows?
His BB-Ref page is a pretty good “relievers are fungible” reminder — it’s basically alternating good years & crappy years.
he’ll fit right in

To right this bullpen, I suspect that there are no insurmountable 40-man options. Chances are, since he was just DFA’d, that this is a trade and not a waiver pickup. If this story is true, the Cubs are getting somebody, and possibly somebody on our 40-man roster. Maybe one of our surplus AAA catchers?
by woodsmeister on May 7, 2009 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions
No, I count 40 guys on the mlb roster page, but Westbrook is on the 60, so we do have one open spot.
5/1 Rundles down, Dellucci activated, no change on 40
5/2 Valbuena up, Barfield up, LaPorta up; Crowe down, Smith to DL, Graffanino DFA; -1 on 40
5/6 Herges up (and on 40), Salas released, Perez down; no change to 40
5/7 Sowers up, Chulf DFA; -1 on 40
Huh, interesting. Check this out:
To make room on the Major League roster for Herges, the Indians optioned lefty Rafael Perez to Columbus, and the Tribe created room on the 40-man roster for Herges by releasing righty Juan Salas.
From the Indians.com article.
I was turned around a little. The 5/2 line above isn’t right, with LaPorta coming on and Graffy off, there was no change. So we were still full on 5/6. And now it’s Chulk’s DFA that makes room for Vizcaino.
dang, you are correct, I totally forgot LaPorta was not on the 40.
Revised:
5/1 Rundles down, Dellucci activated; no change on 40
5/2 Valbuena up, Barfield up, LaPorta up (and on 40); Crowe down, Smith to DL, Graffanino DFA; no change on 40
5/6 Herges up (and on 40), Salas released, Perez down; no change to 40
5/7 Sowers up, Chulf DFA; -1 on 40
So Vizcaino if signed would take the last 40 man spot
His stats look serviceable with the potential to be solid. His worst recent year was while pitching in Coors Field
Jeez, I hole up to take one practice test this morning and this entire site blows up.

I think Laporta goes down when Hafner comes up…May 19th maybe
by APV on May 7, 2009 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions
Do you think that the two really relate to one another?
Don’t LaPorta’s AB come at the expense of Francisco and not necessarily Hafner?
I guess I look at it more along the lines of Hafner takes AB away from Dellucci and whatever RH complement is DH platooning with him than affecting LaPorta. Unless the idea is to allow The Looch to play LF, but I just have trouble buying that if LaPorta can play there everyday, Frisco can be the 4th OF, and Dellucci can be the LH bat off the bench without taking any AB away from Hafner.

Fun facts.
The Tribe has already used 15 pitchers in 28 games.
This total will be increasing quickly in the next few days: Sowers, Herges, and perhaps Vizcaino. That would make 18, with Westbrook most likely making it 19. We would be well on our way towards a new high for number of pitchers used in one season.
We used 30 in 2004 (counting Laker’s one blowout appearance), 31 in 2002, and 32 in 2000.
It’s not that unusual to use 15 pitchers in a month. I mean, you’re bound to use 12, so it’s just a 3-man turnover.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
by Jay on May 7, 2009 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions
True, but I was really trying to incorporate we will be up to 18 in a matter of 2 days. Just by happenstance that Rundles didnt get in the day he was up, or it would have been 19.
18/19 in the span of a month, is a bit much.
As a follow-up to the totals of 32 in a season. I can’t see this year going this route (yet), unless we have another mass sell-off/major injuries. As it is, the only have guys on the 40 that haven’t appeared yet are Rundles, Rondon, Meloan, and Miller. I fully expect to see Meloan and Rundles at some point this year, and probably Rondon in Sept. Obviously Miller won’t appear and the number now becomes 22 (counting Westbrook at some point). The only others I expect before the year is out is Huff.
To approach the record, we’d have to DFA Herges/Masa, do a few trades, slide a few guys to the 60, etc and call up guys like Aquino, Ohka, Saarloos, Lofgren, Gomez, Judy, Herrmaann, Newson, and whoever we trade for/sign off the scrap heap.
But it’s not like it’s a # that increases linearly.
Ben Francisco: An Outfielder only on baseball cards and roster sheets.
Right. First thing you want to do is to deduct 12. Question isn’t how many you use, it’s how many greater than 12? And the answer will be somewhere between 2 and 20. In the first month, we used 3.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

I swear I have memory space for about 70 baseball players, and right now 60 of them are being taken by players in the Indians organization.

i could have sworn luis vizcaino was a light-hitting second baseman. must have been thinking about castillo.
Yeah, I mean, he sounded like a baseball player, and I would have guessed utility infielder. But I don’t know him from a hole in the wall.

On the third day of 2005, Ozzie Guillen used six relievers in the last three innings against Cleveland. They then proceeded to tie the game on three ninth-inning home runs off of “Mister Zero.” All he had left for extras was Luis Vizcaino, who went 2 innings before completely imploding.
This is my most vivid memory of Luis Vizcaino. As a sacrificial lamb.

Confirms it according to an unnamed “major league source,” which could mean just about anything, including that he read it on Twitter. Intriguing anyway, if only because Vizcaino will be cheap and couldn’t be worse than the stiffs already in the pen.
Does this mean he’s rejoining the team? For all the moves they’ve made/are making, it’s been tough not having him on top of things.

I have a feeling he would have to join the ML club. Unless there was absolutely no interest, the Indians were probably able to get him with a guaranteed spot on the 25 man roster
I doubt the Indians would want him if he’s not willing to spend at least a week or two in the minors refining his pitches. I mean, why would they?
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
by Jay on May 8, 2009 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions
Well, he has pitched in the majors within the last few weeks, so I’m not sure how much refining he needs to do. Maybe an appearance or two to get a feel back after the time off.
Again, though, I meant Castro, who was off the beat this week while we were speculating our heads off about all this stuff.

He’s pitched well enough to be DFA’ed from an NL club, that’s how much refining he needs to do.

This is a bizarre claim about a guy who didn’t walk anyone, struck out three, and gave up a single and a double in 3.2 innings of work. He didn’t pitch poorly at all—he just didn’t pitch at all after the 21st. I’d say his greatest sin was being low on the totem pole in a bullpen full of Famous Names. (In fact, he was DFA’d to make room for Famous Name Jeff Samardzija.)
Point being, I only think he needs a few days to make sure he’s got a feel for all of his pitches. Then, he’ll be ready to replace Masa. Maybe as soon as Monday.
