Sipp recalled
ESPN is reporting that Tony Sipp is being recalled to replace Betancourt. I can only find it in the transactions list (no article). Any confirmation?

Tribe Press Release confirming it. Also confirming that only the Rays (9) have a more crowded DL than the Indians (8).

I keep refreshing ESPN.com, waiting to see the story hit the front page.

Team is running out of arms …
Sipp is the logical choice … but numbers have been just OK since his return to Columbus.
7 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 8 K
At least the control seems improved … but he has been a bit spotty with hit ever since his return from surgery.

I don’t know, when we send down our bullpen arms to get straighted out…it’s probably impossible to tell anything from the 7-10 innings of stats that we get. We’ve got to trust the coaches.

Oh I agree … 7 IP is the smallest of small samples.
He was the best candidate by far to return … so can’t argue with it.

Honestly, I think Chulk would have been better. He is less likely to walk 3 guys in an inning.

Whoa. If that’s the case, the man is even more incredible than I thought.
Though maybe with Sowers on the mound, we should have just conceded the game and given him the day off.

Why is this so surprising? If it were definitely serious, he’d have been on the DL already.
1B is less strenuous than C, but still a lot more strenuous than DH. I one time read an official saying that for many injuries, playing 1B can be more strenuous than playing SS.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

I just hope we don’t have to watch him trying to limp his way to first.
by Chief Wahoo on Jun 1, 2009 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You really think he’d be in the lineup if he had to limp his way to 1B?
He’s awesome, but he isn’t Barry Bonds.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

I mean, no. I trust Victor and the staff, I’m just a bit worried he may be pushing it.
by Chief Wahoo on Jun 1, 2009 5:14 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
What exactly is there to worry about at this point?
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
by Jay on Jun 1, 2009 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Point taken, not like this season could get much worse. Might as well go balls to the wall.
by Chief Wahoo on Jun 1, 2009 5:18 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, not sure I understand why it’s surprising … maybe because he’s back so quickly.
But, it essence, the guy has a bruised knee. He may be a little ginger on the bases, but no reason to think he can’t still swing a bat.

Victor’s Tough. He’s a baseball player.

i simply thought he’d get a few games to make sure it was fine. maybe i bought in too much to the woe-is-me-ism of the talk about the last few days’ injuries.

re: 1B vs SS. i, personally would not want to have to do the splits all the time lunching for throws on a regular basis.
by Brick. on Jun 1, 2009 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
lunching is when you thrust forward to grab a sandwich from the guy in front of you.

Seeing the way he couldn’t any weight on his leg, I was under the impression that “day to day” meant " “not quite a DL stint”.

Remember they said that about Victor playing first last year—that it was worse for his hamstring than catching?

Am I the only one who has a strange feeling a big trade is coming soon? I know it makes little sense in many regards at the moment, but I just feel it….in my gut.
by APV on Jun 1, 2009 5:25 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
A big trade? I think it would have to be Peralta or DeRosa, or Shoppach once he’s healthy. And it would have to be for a starter, I would think.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
by Jay on Jun 1, 2009 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
meant to say, “or Shoppach once Victor is healthy” …
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
by Jay on Jun 1, 2009 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I believe “he” can be understood to mean “Victor Martinez” with the proper capitalization. Example:
…or Shoppach once He’s healthy.

hahaha… that’s great.
I’m glad I waited for the explanation before I started putting it in all my technical requirement docs.

Peralta or DeRosa, or Shoppach
That’s the trio I was feeling, especially the first two
by APV on Jun 1, 2009 5:42 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
doesn’t dealing Peralta have to net us a 3B for next year? Or has Agent M earned a shot? Not Hodges, right?
by Brick. on Jun 1, 2009 5:46 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think dealing Peralta would be about the fact that another team would be willing to play him at short, and we are not anymore. His bat isn’t anything special at third. We’d look elsewhere in the offseason, I would guess, and that includes Agent M.
by dgcambridge on Jun 1, 2009 5:53 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Peralta’s bat isn’t special anywhere this year. Maybe at pitcher. But if he were to repeat last year’s number he’d be pretty acceptable at third. Again, quick to offer up Jhonny, because he is fat and lazy and doesn’t care.
by odradek on Jun 1, 2009 11:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Do not throw that “fat/lazy/doesn’t care” accusation at me.
He’s an OK bet (but maybe not a good bet anymore) to be a league average bat at third base, and has a decent contract for two more years. That elite offensive year is getting pretty far behind him. I stand by what I said: if there’s a team willing to play him at short, he’s more valuable to them.
by dgcambridge on Jun 4, 2009 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He’s 27. He’s three months older than Grady Sizemore. Would you say Grady’s elite offensive year (2006) is pretty far behind him?
by odradek on Jun 5, 2009 11:41 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It would have to be DeRosa IMO. If we traded anyone but DeRosa it would be a signal that our season is officially over. Though I think you can make an argument that trading Shoppach wouldn’t be a big deal.
by world dictator on Jun 1, 2009 5:45 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i don’t see where we’d deal derosa till we start to get a little more healthy. depends on what we get back, i guess.
by Brick. on Jun 1, 2009 5:47 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
But if we trade DeRo for a player that can help us this year, why does it matter when we get that player?
by world dictator on Jun 1, 2009 5:48 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
hm, i guess i was thinking we’d be dealing players to set us up for next year.
by Brick. on Jun 1, 2009 5:51 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I assume that any players we’re looking at right now will be able to help us this year and next year. If we waited until we gave up on the season then the net of possible acquisitions would get larger.
by world dictator on Jun 1, 2009 5:57 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
also…why would Jhonny be on the block?
by world dictator on Jun 1, 2009 5:45 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Because for this year, Jhonny and DeRosa are redundant. And someone else might want Jhonny at short.
by dgcambridge on Jun 1, 2009 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
But DeRosa is signed for one year while Jhonny is signed for multiple years.
i’d think that a trade of Jhonny would have more to do with the team’s feeling about Jhonny and less to do with our standings in the rankings. Because even if you traded Peralta we’d still trade DeRosa.
by world dictator on Jun 1, 2009 5:59 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yes, I agree with this. I’d just add: once (if) they’ve decided that Jhonny isn’t our third baseman of the future, then he and DeRosa are in the same position. (which isn’t to say they’re equivalent) You might as well trade one now, and the other when you are sure that you are out of it.
by dgcambridge on Jun 1, 2009 6:09 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It isn’t necessary a binary decision. Jhonny might be a fine 3B for the next two seasons, but maybe he can be flipped for something even better.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
by Jay on Jun 1, 2009 8:02 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Exactly – at 3B Jhonny is not an “essential” piece of the plan moving forward when he could be someone else’s 3B
by APV on Jun 1, 2009 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed. But like I said that has to do more so with Jhonny/A good offer and less/nothing to do with the standings.
But all this talk of Jhonny is pure speculation correct?

Oh, yeah. I’m just waiting for the MLBTR article on this comment thread to pop up.

by world dictator on Jun 2, 2009 11:37 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
If the Cubs, Mets, Braves, and Cards all have at least a modicum of interest you would think we could get a viable starting arm.
by cheech99 on Jun 1, 2009 5:51 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t want any former Yankees unless they traded a handful of starts for $40+ million.
