this isn’t founded on much, but one problem I would imagine Hamilton will encounter is I’m going to guess any prescription opiates are off the table for him. There are certainly other pain killers out there, but this would seem to be an issue the Rangers would have to consider in any kind of injury situation.
Well there’s really no reason why opiates would absolutely be off limits to him, especially under the close supervision of the Rangers staff and especially if he is experiencing surgical pain. Sure the argument can be made that he is somehow susceptible to addiction, but undertreating pain is no way to approach his problems, and can lead to significant issues down the road as well.
As far as the impacts of cocaine on immune function and healing processes, I honestly have no insight into what it’s long-term impact would be apart from the obvious cardiovascular and neurological effects. My initial thought is that if he’s relatively healthy enough to be playing major league baseball, I wouldn’t be too concerned about his general immune/healing status at this point. This smells of a non-story that a writer thought would be note-worthy by getting some quotes from a trainer who never gets any interest from reporters. But again, I’m not a doctor. I just play one on tv.

My thought, too. That seems to be the common-sense starting point, and there’s nothing but baseless, non-expert speculation to take us off that point. It’s a concocted story with no substance.
I do think Adam will turn out to be right with regard to painkillers, though.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
Well in the end it’s always very variable with how different physicians approach pain management/opiate addiction. Every week we get a different professor giving us a completely different tune. What everyone agrees on though is that giving prescription opiates outside of hospital on an as needed basis is usually bad news with someone with an addiction history. In the immediate post-op period (and even during the anaesthesia induction they’ll likely give fentanyl), non-opioid analgesia for severe pain is hard to come by. If he can stand the pain on tylenol and toradol though, no reason to go to opioids I guess. But abdominal surgery tends to hurt right after the operation, or so the patients tell me.

Thank goodness none of our players have used illegal substances for any reason!

Im not a doctor
But I go to medical school and have asked various physicians about this type of thing. The only “injury risk” that I know of is increased risk of heart attack and other heart related problems.
On the other hand crack is a weird drug because it is crystallized form of cocaine and long term problems are still unknown.
A question, Sizemore is getting an MRI on monday, any information you guys may know about his health?
I’ll just wait until Monday, thank you.

Yes. I have been offering him rum and cigars for weeks now. Where did I get the rum? I’ll never tell.
