Westbrook Setback
"Jake Westbrook's rehab is on hold. In the first setback Westbrook has had since his Tommy John ligament replacement surgery one year ago, the Indians appear to have scrapped previous plans to have him make his third rehab start Wednesday. Westbrook is still dealing with some soreness in his right elbow from after his start Friday for Double-A Akron. He played catch today and is tentatively scheduled to throw a bullpen session Wednesday. No word on when the Indians are now targeting that third start to take place, but this would obviously push back Westbrook's big league return."

Mods, can we make this FanShot a template? I’d like to avoid repeating the whole process in a week when Sizemore has a setback.

Aaron Laffey’s rehab assignment will begin Thursday, when he’ll throw three innings in a start for Triple-A Columbus. He has been scheduled for a setback sometime early next week.

Lefthander Scott Lewis, a starter for the Cleveland Indians, will toe the mound for the Akron Aeros tonight in a 7:05 p.m. start at Merchantsauto.com Stadium. On April 10, Lewis made a start against Toronto and lasted 4 1/3 innings, giving up four runs. Shortly later, he was placed on the 60-day disabled list with a left elbow strain. It is expected that this will be a repeat occurrence and that he will likely suffer a setback before he ever makes it to the ballpark.

This entire sequence makes me incredibly sad.
Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?

ClemsonGirl’s morale has been scratched as a precaution. Her mood will be reevaluated in 10-14 days.

I’ll make this green even if it makes my lame non-green one in the middle look bad.

In related news, tonight is “Free Punch in the Face and/or Gut Night” at the stadium for the 1st 5,000 fans.
As General Manager of this team, I demand to know when I'm getting a start.

so do fans get to punch someone in the face and/or gut or do the fans get punched in the face and/or gut?

No, last night any ticket stub could be redeemed for a view into the Mirror of Bitter Truth.

My optimism about the 2009 season is having a setback.

Strike 2 for me was last night. One more strike and my optimism disappears

Hamilton got his comment from Wedge and Hoynes repeated much of the same today.
A little soreness was expected at some point. Officially it is not considered a “setback.”
The Tribe obviously is not taking the soreness too seriously since Westbrook is scheduled to have a bullpen session tomorrow.
And finally, what Castrovince wrote is not inconsistent with what Wedge said. Castrovince just chose to make it sound more dramatic than it seems to be.

Try to put an optimistic spin on it, but it ain’t good news. It’s bad news. Even if it’s not considered a setback.

I guess it’s bad news, but here’s a class photo of all the pitchers coming back from Tommy John surgery who haven’t had to deal with a hitch in the rehab process:

No, that was not bad news. As Shapiro said last night all it meant was instead of being an “express” recovery" it has now become a “fast” one.
By contrast this is bad news:
As for Westbrook, he was originally scheduled to make his third rehab start Wednesday for Triple-A Columbus. When the soreness forced the Indians to scratch him from that start, the team announced Westbrook would instead throw a bullpen session Wednesday. But that backup plan was scrapped, as well.
Now, Westbrook is firmly in wait-and-see mode. The Indians have not said when they expect him to throw again.
“It’s disappointing, because I was real close [to coming back],” Westbrook said. “But it’s one of those things where, when I come back, I don’t want [the elbow] to be in my head. I want to be able to let the ball go.”
Westbrook has dealt with the usual post-surgery soreness in his elbow throughout his return-to-throw program, but the soreness reached a new point after his start for Double-A Akron last Friday.
“We’ll take some days here and evaluate it and see how it responds to treatment,” Westbrook said.
And Pavano’s next start being pushed back because of a sore shoulder is another example of bad news.

Yes, because I expect Jake to always defy unfortunance (new word!).

A surprise to those who see no reason to be downtrodden about Cleveland sports.
by dgcambridge on Jun 18, 2009 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That may not be connected to this.
Rehabs rarely go smoothly all the way through, with no setbacks. Pavano’s injury history is what it is. These events should not surprise anyone regardless of any belief in curses.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

This is a profoundly disruptive surgery. To expect everything to go smoothly is optimistic. And, curses aside, how often do things go smoothly for the Cleveland Indians?

when I come back, I don’t want [the elbow] to be in my head
I have to agree with him…. Having the elbow end up in entirely the wrong part of the anatomy would be one of the worst outcomes.
