Around SBN: 2012 Africa Cup Of Nations Final

Paul and Tony talk to Kevin Goldstein about a lot of our top prospects. Some pretty interesting insights on Santana, Weglarz, and Rondon.

For those of with the attention span of a fruit fly and no sound on PC (don’t ask), does anyone care to do an abstract?

First: The entrance music can’t be beat.

Lastoria thinks Laffey could be back in the bullpen right now.

Shap said on TV that Laffey would go to the rotation

by Roger Dorn on Jun 19, 2009 9:58 AM EDT up reply actions

Right, I think Tony’s point was that he’s healthy enough for the short stints today and it shouldn’t be long then until he’s “stretched out” enough for the rotation.

I just started listening. I can’t say I agree one bit that we should try Meloan in the big leagues yet.

To be fair, their reasoning is “what the hell…can’t be worse than our current bullpen”

Carlson did not work out for the Indians.

On a side note, what little research I did on him after the pick was made I liked.

Ben happy to not be drafted by Detroit because his brother his a few years ahead of him in their system at the same position (career .835 OPS through four years).

I have to pause it here. Recap suspended.

Goldstein mentions Delvi Cid as a guy he really likes outside of our current top prospects.

by cleveland teamer on Jun 19, 2009 10:31 AM EDT reply actions

he’s a real sleeper – I mentioned this a bit when Tony was doing his top 100 list and had Delvi way down in the back half – he’s young, speedy, in CF, and seems to have good on base skills

19 at Lake County is great; “offers a whole lot to dream on”‘; “slicey” swing, but he’s “got a feel for contact”; good size and could grow into his offense; “not just dreaming, he’s actually getting it done”; “not top 11 yet, but getting there”

by fleerdon on Jun 20, 2009 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions

I thought it was interesting that Goldstein wasn’t as high on White as some other people. Though his reasoning, where the hell are you going to play, makes a lot of since.

Though his comments on Wegz were the best. Something to the tune of “Wegz had a slow start but he’s really coming on lately. That’s impressive considering his age and well..he’s CANADIAN”

by world dictator on Jun 19, 2009 8:53 PM EDT reply actions

Goldstein on Santana:

With Wieters up, he’s in the conversation with Buster Posey for best catching prospect, hits the ball on the screws very consistently; has some make-up issues — “histrionic” on the field, “the kind of guy who’s going to get his teammates plunked.”

by fleerdon on Jun 20, 2009 11:42 AM EDT reply actions

And apparently Santana is kind of a drama queen

Man Goldstein can diagnosis personality disorders now… what a mighty good man.

Goldstein on Chisenhall:

No bad reviews; scouts are saying he’s the best player in the Carolina League these year; the power may not translate perfectly at higher levels, but the average will; defense is a bit rough; his tools “belong” at third base, but is going to need work.

by fleerdon on Jun 20, 2009 11:46 AM EDT reply actions

Goldstein on Brantley:

“Jury’s still out”; “he’ll draw his fair share of walks, but he’s not Rickey Henderson”; 20-30 SB kind of guy, but very little power, but the Indians think his size is going to help him “fall into some power”; breaks and routes are sloppy; might have a floor as a decent fourth outfielder, but the ceiling is perplexing.

by fleerdon on Jun 20, 2009 11:49 AM EDT reply actions

Not Rickey Henderson doesn’t tell us very much

by Roger Dorn on Jun 20, 2009 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions

From what I gathered, KG was implying that Brantley’s sort of a poor man’s Ricky Henderson

by world dictator on Jun 20, 2009 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Coincidentally, my scouting report also mentioned “Not Rickey Henderson.”

by gte619n on Jun 22, 2009 8:23 AM EDT up reply actions

mine said “Not Carmen Castillo” – wasn’t sure which way to take that

by APV on Jun 24, 2009 3:37 AM EDT up reply actions

Goldstein on Rondon:

Excellent action on the fastball; breaking ball is always getting better; change-up is coming around; maybe not “monster upside,” but still looks like a starter.

by fleerdon on Jun 20, 2009 11:51 AM EDT reply actions

Goldstein on LaPorta:

Surprises people defensively in left — “he’s better then Nick Weglarz, how’s that?”

by fleerdon on Jun 20, 2009 11:53 AM EDT reply actions

Goldstein on House:

Getting better through the year; impressive that he’s in a full-season league; “better than we think he is”; probably was a third-rounder if not for the college commitments; rural-area pitchers often have to learn that “man cannot pitch by fastball alone”; “pretty darn good” with his breaking balls — it’s a chase pitch with a lot of promise; “definitely” top 11.

by fleerdon on Jun 20, 2009 11:58 AM EDT reply actions

And now I shall make myself a plus-plus omelette.
