So, in your dream world, who to the Indians hire to do TV after Undermanning is kidnapped by aliens?
Not only am I confident that I’m the only one in this thread, but I’ve gotten myself watching Izzard clips on youtube.
Steel Nick
I’ve forced myself to actually do my work. Rocky 2, ahoy!

This has to be better than Cheaper by the Dozen 2.
Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?
I would choose Cheaper by the Dozen but I don’t like Rocky and admit that I am very easily amused.
Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?
Haha oh man. I’m just glad not to be working on the former, it lingered too long. Rocky is fresh meat here, which is always a good thing.

Is this added to the list of things we disagree on?
Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?
Well I’m biased, I’m sick of every movie we work on here by the time we’re done. Plus it was the 2nd “goofy” Steve Martin flick here in the last month, so it was tough to love.

No. It’s bad. But usually I think bad movies are funny.

I win this either way. Either we get a win and Wood save for my fantasty team, or we lose and I get a Nathan save for my fantasy team. I like my chances.

I’m trying to piss the team off into “lets score some runs” mode. Reverse psychology is all. Believe me. I’d rather lose every stat on my fantasy team this week and win this game.

They can’t hear me when I yell at them through my TV? What?

Don’t worry, I only realized this a couple days ago.

Alright people, we get it. We won’t talk about our cats if y’all don’t talk about your kids.
I believe in Carl Pavano.
Nick is the only one with an actual problem with the cat-talk. It’s the fantasy baseball talk that’s irritating.

By the way, I was only “big rec”-ing because it was a hilarious sentence in its own right. I had no idea what it referred to.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
Thread 1 was about 50% cats, 25% baseball, 25% people complaining about the thread having so much cat.

Are those chocolate covered pretzels or is there some big-city food that’s an actual chocolate-flavored pretzel?
I like this use of the “big city” modifier

That mechanism just had dislocation written all over it. And especially the way he was hanging his arm. I’m still guessing the season’s caput but I hope I’m wrong. And I hope I’m wrong for the sane reason and not because we decided to play Droobs with one functioning arm.

I mean, we were pretty bad before the injuries hit.

Except Grady apparently was never all the way healthy and he really is kind of the catalyst for this team.
Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?
This is exactly what I mean, though. I don’t buy it. Players do play through injuries. It happens every year in every sport. And if he was too hurt to be productive in April, he shouldn’t have been playing, he should have been on the DL.
This excuse does not work any more for me.
Yes he should have been on the Dl. I agree with you. I don’t buy that this was an injury he could effectively play through. I know that athletes play through injuries but some injuries are too bad. This is one of them in my opinion. I don’t have much faith in our training staff at the moment so I’m blaming them.
Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?
No one hitter is a “catalyst,” such that the team falls apart when he’s not right — short of Bonds at his peak or possibly Pujols. Grady at this Hell, I think one dominant reliever can have more of a spillover effect than a great all-around player like Grady.
Grady in his best seasons generates about 10 marginal runs above replacement level per month. This year, 5 marginal runs so far. So, that’s 15 runs different. It’s significant — it’s the lack of a great player — but it doesn’t cripple a whole team.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
by Jay on Jun 3, 2009 9:40 AM EDT up reply actions
Well yeah I never said the relievers were good. The bullpen has always sucked. I think Grady had kind of a moral affect on the team. Since I’m a girl I think of things like that not necessarily numbers.
The thing is I think this team as a whole is good when everyone is playing how they should be.
Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?
It’s obvious the staff thinks about the team’s mental state, as well, given their reliance on veteran leaders like Nixon. I don’t see that we have a great one this year, but I gather they were thinking DeRosa, Dellucci, and possibly Wood might provide that? Martinez I think provides a lot of heart to the team, but likely not a lot of kicks in the ass.
I believe in Carl Pavano.
I think Victor is a good leader to the Latin players and they were relying on DeRosa to be the vocal veteran leader in the dugout and Wood in the bullpen. Grady was more of a lead by example guy and was never considered very vocal but I think his mood kind of affected the whole team.
Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?
I don’t see why Victor would only be a good leader to Latin players. I’m sure Garko looks up to him.
Steel Nick
I think every younger player must look up to Victor. He’s been in the U.S. for something like 12 years now anyway and speaks perfectly good English.
Shoppach in the Annual said that everyone pretty much talks to everyone in the clubhouse, implying that there aren’t really ethnic cliques so much.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
That’s just what they say. I’m sure he is a fabulous leader to everyone. Just repeating what i’ve heard.
Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?
I’m not sure why you would be prolonging this, but exactly where have you heard that he’s a “fabulous leader” in the clubhouse? I have basically read the opposite.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
by Jay on Jun 4, 2009 8:57 AM EDT up reply actions
I read the opposite in your last post.
“I think every younger player must look up to Victor.”
I did say I am sure, not necessarily I have heard. I HAVE heard, probably on an Indians broadcast so you can take that with a grain of salt I guess, that he is a good leader especially with the Latin players.
Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?
Sorry, I actually got confused about who we were talking about.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
I still maintain he is a good leader just not the same kind.
Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?
He sets a tremendous example, and that is very important. It’s just that he does nothing else.
In the 2007 SI cover story, Shapiro is quoted saying: “There is a superstar on our team, but if you walked into our clubhouse, you’d have no idea who it is.” That is a great complement — he doesn’t thrive on ego or at least doesn’t demand that others cater to it — but the other side of it is, he doesn’t make his presence felt.
Troy Glaus, quoted in the same article: “I was at the All-Star Game with him last year, and I’m telling you, he did not say one word the entire time. Not one word. And it’s not because he’s a bad guy. He’s just that quiet.”
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
by Jay on Jun 4, 2009 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions
I think Grady had kind of a moral affect on the team. Since I’m a girl I think of things like that not necessarily numbers.
The only non-patronizing response I can give to this is: Whatever.
I see no reason to think Grady’s effect on club morale is any greater than his performance would indicate, in part because his performance is generally so excellent. Losing any key player to injury will hurt morale.
I think Grady sets a great example in terms of attitude and effort, but from all accounts, he doesn’t exhibit much leadership beyond that. Well behind Victor in that area, and Victor may not even be all that impressive of a leader, either. Hence the intermittent moaning from Wedge that the clubhouse need more leadership presence than it tends to have. (Why he thinks it needs this is never all that clear.)
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
by Jay on Jun 3, 2009 5:50 PM EDT up reply actions
Okay fine think what you want but I still think Grady is a great leader for the team and you won’t convince me otherwise.
Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?
No because that’s what I think. He seems like a silent leader kind of guy. Unless by because I’m a girl you are implying that girls are stubborn and in this case this is probably true. I am incredibly stubborn.
Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?
Nah, just playing with the gender generalization you were using earlier with Jay. I doubt there’s anyone who doesn’t look up to what Grady does on the field and wish they could play like him. Other than that I haven’t thought much about his clubhouse effect.
Steel Nick
In fairness, it’s not just his ability, it’s his attitude and effort.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
