That’s kind of a beard, you know.

by peter m on Jun 23, 2009 5:41 PM EDT reply actions

Well that’s simply bully…

by Logodaedalus on Jun 23, 2009 5:46 PM EDT reply actions

That is Grade A facial hair.

by Ryan on Jun 23, 2009 6:43 PM EDT reply actions

It must be a Toronto thing. McGowan was rocking some serious chops last year.

It looks like moles are mating with his face. That’s atrocious.

I become an expert simply by doing something.

There are two kinds of people in this world. Those that find a bad beard awful, and those that wear bad beards.
I myself am of the latter variety. And I think that the psychological reasoning is similar to why punks wear green mohawks: “I can’t look like that? Oh yes I can.”

by thevicar on Jun 23, 2009 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s not the rebellion thing, it’s that he looks like a complete tool. It’s not funny cool, it’s not normal cool, it’s not anti-establishment cool, it’s just awful.

I become an expert simply by doing something.

by Brad D on Jun 24, 2009 1:03 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, you’re not part of the latter. When you can do these things, you usually find it very fun.

The thing is, I can. I could grow a beard that would eat other, lesser, more “cool” beards. I just choose not to because I hate the look of small mammals humping my face.

by Brad D on Jun 24, 2009 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions

My beard could eat all of you.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

by Jay on Jun 24, 2009 5:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Speaking of which, how’s Sam? His beard coming in yet?

by Logodaedalus on Jun 24, 2009 5:51 PM EDT up reply actions

No, but he does have a receding hairline.

He’s doing pretty great, thanks.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

by Jay on Jun 24, 2009 6:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Dude, your beard is wicked strong. Have you found that it’s gotten less notice as you’ve aged or is it a relatively new development for you?

by NickFantana on Jun 24, 2009 6:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t know. It’s always been solid, since I was 20 or even younger. I’ve had it continuously for 12 years now.

Facial hair definitely doesn’t get noticed at a recording studio.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

by Jay on Jun 24, 2009 7:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Wouldn’t that depend somewhat on musical genre? More beards in indie rock than gregorian chants.

by FredOx on Jun 24, 2009 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Our studio is basically pan-genre. I think that for just about any kind of music, the male musicians are more likely to have facial hair than the general population.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

by Jay on Jun 24, 2009 11:53 PM EDT up reply actions

But, certainly, there have been occasions where you’ve needed to class it up a bit… I’m only asking because I’m considering a lifetime commitment to my beard.

by NickFantana on Jun 24, 2009 11:49 PM EDT up reply actions

A well-trimmed, shaped beard is always very classy.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

by Jay on Jun 24, 2009 11:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Well-trimmed. That’s what I’m missing. I may need to invest in some shears of some kind.

by NickFantana on Jun 25, 2009 9:56 AM EDT up reply actions

A good beard-trimmer is gold. Your barber or stylist probably will also do a great job if you ask.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

by Jay on Jun 25, 2009 11:46 AM EDT up reply actions

I cut my own hair. It may be time to make a significant beard-related investment.

Incidentally, I think I could pull of what Tallet is doing. Now THAT’s unprofessional.

by NickFantana on Jun 25, 2009 11:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ll warn you that once you start regularly trimming your beard it can become something of an obsession, as in you’ll have a hard time walking past the bathroom mirror and not want to trim a stray hair or two

by APV on Jun 26, 2009 12:33 AM EDT up reply actions

The “shaving a stark line from the jawline and below” thing is really annoying and I wish that wasn’t the current trend for those who feel they need to look work-appropriate. I happen to like my beard when it looks like I crashed a helicopter in a remote part of Oregon about two weeks ago. That’s usually how long I let it go before I feel compelled to start all over.

OH MY GOD THAT IS AWESOME.

Now I’m disappointed that we let him go.

(FYI: He’s a 4.36 ERA with 65K in 88 IP against 39 BB)

I’m not allowed to say anything about (beards), but if I was, I’d say this was awesome.

Why are you specifically banned from saying anything about beards?

Its an inverted Boston Red Sox Redneck goatee. If baseball ability were not an issue, would you rather have that guy or Kevin Youkilis on your team?

by BrianRose on Jun 24, 2009 12:24 PM EDT reply actions

Is the correct answer Kyle Orton?

I rec this picture. Remember back when you first had Sex Ed, and you watched videos of what grown ups look like? Usually it’s just a figure of a man and a woman. Instead, Brian Tallet should be the man.
