It’s direct from the Indians media relations group.

Wonder if it will update when non-positive news comes out?

Regardless, seems like the place to go first to get announcements.

I assumed he left to defend his country out of a sense of patriotic duty… but yours has more irony, or tragic inevitability, or whatever you want to call it.

by Brick. on Jun 26, 2009 4:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Considering just two years ago Toorii Huunteer said something along the lines of Fausto’s stuff being retarded, i’d rather see a line like 6.1 IP, 0 H, 13 K, -1 runs in Single A before i get optimistic..

You know Selig? Ombudsman.

by rolub on Jun 25, 2009 11:32 PM EDT up reply actions

As I said in the game thread, this might be good, it might be meaningless. It’s impossible to tell without having seen him pitch. On the one hand, he could be getting strikeouts instead of walks because the hitters aren’t familiar with him and are swinging at a lot of stuff out of the strikezone. On the other hand, even dominating pitchers will walk one guy in six innings, and it’s not as though Fausto depends on strikeouts when he’s at his best.

If he puts together several of these in a row, I’ll start paying attention.

by Logodaedalus on Jun 25, 2009 11:43 PM EDT up reply actions

How is that different than any rehab assignment?

by world dictator on Jun 26, 2009 12:32 AM EDT up reply actions

It’s not, fundamentally. It’s at a lower level than they usually are, which means a little bit, but you obviously can never read too much into rehab stat lines. But it can’t be a bad sign…

by Logodaedalus on Jun 26, 2009 3:27 AM EDT up reply actions

I am keeping my eye on the walk numbers. A strike is a strike at any level

by Roger Dorn on Jun 26, 2009 9:16 AM EDT up reply actions

A swinging strike isn’t, necessarily. But like I said, it can’t be bad that he only walked one.

by Logodaedalus on Jun 26, 2009 11:35 AM EDT up reply actions

A strike is not a strike at any level. Umpiring is very inconsistent. There’s a reason that minor league umpires are in the minor leagues.

by woodsmeister on Jun 26, 2009 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Umpiring is inconsisent, but is there any reason to think that strike zones are systematically larger at lower levels? I would think they would be more variable, but not necessarily biased in one direction or the other.

by Logodaedalus on Jun 26, 2009 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree. I think that walks will be indicative of his control no matter what level

by Roger Dorn on Jun 26, 2009 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Well yes, I agree… unless he’s getting a lot more swings at balls out of the zone. In which case what would have been walks might turn into other things.

by Logodaedalus on Jun 26, 2009 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions

An umpire who knows that Carmona is on rehab from the Bigs might be more likely to give him the benefit of the doubt as a former major leaguer. Or he might have lucked into an umpire who characteristically gives the low strike.

Pitch monitoring and grading, whether with QuesTec or some other system, has tended to make major league umpiring more consistent, though there are outliers like CB Bucknor and Dana DeMuth. I don’t think you can say the same in the minors.

by woodsmeister on Jun 26, 2009 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s possible he’s getting the benefit of the doubt. It’s also possible he’s lucked into an umpire who is liberal on the low side of the strike zone, but what I’m saying is, it seems equally likely (a priori, anyway) that he would get an umpire who’s less willing than average to give the low strike. If the latter is the case, then that makes his single walk even more impressive.

In any event, again, it doesn’t seem to me there’s a whole lot we can glean from these numbers.

by Logodaedalus on Jun 26, 2009 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t even know why you guys are debating this. He pitched 6 no-hit innings. That may or may not be a positive indicator – but it is basically impossible to say it could be bad.

by APV on Jun 26, 2009 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with you. This isn’t bad. It will take more than this to know if it means he’s back but this cannot be bad.

Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?

by ClemsonGirl on Jun 26, 2009 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions

No one is saying it’s bad. I’ve twice said that it can’t be bad. I agree with ClemsonGirl — we need to see more than one of these before we get excited about it.

by Logodaedalus on Jun 26, 2009 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions

but what did the ballboy eat for lunch that day? if it was chicken wings, then he could have greased up the balls causing better movement for fausto. this whole outing could be one huge mirage, so we might as well toss out those numbers.

by Brick. on Jun 26, 2009 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, c’mon. No one is arguing for tossing out the numbers either. Just waiting until there are more, and then interpreting them together.

by Logodaedalus on Jun 26, 2009 4:20 PM EDT up reply actions

My other option is keep talking about how we suck

by Jay on Jun 26, 2009 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions

This was the point I was trying to make.

There’s no reason to comb through and question Carmona’s minor league stat line and fawn over Westbrook’s

by world dictator on Jun 27, 2009 2:06 AM EDT up reply actions

It is if you buy into the theory that part of the problem is that major league hitters have figured out how to lay off the power sinker.

Though I look right at home, I still feel like an exile

by Manhattan Tribe Fan on Jun 26, 2009 8:01 AM EDT up reply actions

I do not really buy into that theory

by Roger Dorn on Jun 26, 2009 9:17 AM EDT up reply actions

neither do i. Carmona’s GB-rates have never really diminished, meaning people are still swinging at his power sinker. The problem is he isn’t getting that sinker into the zone enough. So like Roger, I’m looking at his walks (though the Ks are nice, too). Also – Fausto is a first-ballot Lake County HOFer, right?

by APV on Jun 26, 2009 10:01 AM EDT up reply actions

meaning people are still swinging at his power sinker.

this is very encouraging to see. i always feared they just took no matter what, and hoped for balls.

by Brick. on Jun 26, 2009 10:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Worth mentioning that Carmona’s BB/9 in his minor league career is 1.7, and it doesn’t really jump when he ascends to another level.

That 1.7 BB/9 is much closer to his 2007 2.5 than it is to 5.2 or 6.1, his totals for 2008 and 2009, respectively.

by bewwolv on Jun 26, 2009 11:09 AM EDT up reply actions

To edit that above for clarity: “and it doesn’t really jump when he ascends to another level.”

Meaning, his walk totals didn’t rise significantly as he rose to successive levels in the minors.

As opposed to the significant rise in the number of batters Jeremy Sowers didn’t strike out.

by bewwolv on Jun 26, 2009 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions

They love him in Lake County, absolutely.

by dgcambridge on Jun 26, 2009 11:54 AM EDT up reply actions

After he’s done pitching he should go into the stands and challenge people to fight.

by odradek on Jun 27, 2009 2:09 AM EDT up reply actions

These stat lines have already been posted here, but this is what Kevin Goldstein has to say:

Fausto Carmona, RHP, Indians (Low-A Lake County)
Thursday’s stats: 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K
Now of course, a guy like Fausto Carmona is supposed to dominate in the Sally League, but at least he did. His fastball sat in the low 90s with its signature sink, while his command and secondary pitches were surprisingly sharp. With the big league club losing eight of ten games and suddenly 12 games out, they’ll take all the good news they can get.

Nick Weglarz, OF, Indians (Double-A Akron)
Thursday’s stats: 1-for-1, HR (11), R, RBI, 4 BB
Home runs and walks are what Weglarz brings to the table, and he showed why on Thursday night by going deep for the third straight game and is batting a healthy .324/.471/.634 in 22 games this month. He’s a hard prospect to truly evaluate, as he’s a 21-year-old player already with a old player skillset, but it’s a pretty nice skill set to have.

by cleveland teamer on Jun 26, 2009 4:40 PM EDT reply actions

Four walks and a home run?

This kind of screams “needs to be promoted to a level where the pitchers are capable of fooling him.”

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

by Jay on Jun 26, 2009 5:06 PM EDT up reply actions

that would be the American League.

by dgcambridge on Jun 26, 2009 5:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Wegz needs to make it to the bigs this season to keep pace with Adam Dunn’s career ascent, which in turn I will lord over Adam at every opportunity.

by fleerdon on Jun 30, 2009 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Carmona’s pitching in Akron tonight. Any chance someone can make it to Canal Park and give us a first-hand account?
