So long, DeRo.

Mark DeRosa has been dealt to St. Louis for RHP Chris Perez and a (non-trivial)  PTBNL.

CastroTurf: DeRosa to the Cardinals
DeRosa, a subject of trade rumors almost from the time he first slipped on an Indians uniform, is on the block no more. The Indians have traded the versatile veteran to the Cardinals for right-hander Chris Perez and a player to be named later. GM Mark Shapiro said the PTBN component is an important one, akin to the Coco Crisp and Michael Brantley acquisitions in the past.

On the player and PTBNL received from the Cardinals:

Tribe deals DeRosa to Cards for Perez | indians.com: News
Perez, who turns 24 on July 1, has spent the majority of 2009 in the Cardinals' bullpen, going 1-1 with a save and a 4.18 ERA in 29 appearances. He began the year at Triple-A Memphis, where he was 1-0 with two saves and a 0.00 ERA in four innings of work. Major Leaguers have hit just .195 off him. Indians general manager Mark Shapiro said the player to be named component is an important part of the deal for the Indians. They will evaluate their options over the remainder of the Minor League season.

The AP story has some quotes from DeRosa and Shapiro:

Cleveland Indians ship infielder Mark DeRosa to St. Louis Cardinals for reliever Chris Perez - ESPN
DeRosa didn't play in the Indians' 7-3 loss to Cincinnati. The trade was announced immediately after the game.

"We felt the time was right to maximize the value Mark had," Indians general manager Mark Shapiro said. Perez, who turns 24, on July 1, has a 4.18 ERA in 29 appearances with a 1-1 record and one save.

Shapiro hopes he can help Cleveland's beleagured bullpen, which is a major reason the Indians are 31-45. "He throws 93 to 95 [mph]," Shapiro said. "He had back end stuff and the ability to get a strikeout."

Some scouting reports on Chris Perez (thanks to world dictator):

Prospect Profile: Chris Perez « Future Redbirds
If you just look at his K’s and opponents batting averages (not shown), he’s just been scary good. The big issue: Perez can be his own worst enemy. In 84 professional innings, he’s allowed just 43 hits, but has walked 60, hit 13 batsmen and thrown 13 wild pitches. The big oddity with Perez is his handling of left-handed batters. He is equally tough to hit facing either, and strikes both out with regularity, but he walks them twice as often. (10.31 BB/9 against 5.2 BB/9.)

Cards Closer Candidate: Chris Perez | FanGraphs Fantasy Baseball
When Perez reached St. Louis in mid-May, he continued to tantalize with his K rates and high-octane stuff while also frustrating with his command hiccups. On the positive side, Perez highlighted his closer-worthy talent, pumping in fastballs at an average of 95.2 MPH (used 75% of the time) and complementing the heater with an 85.1 MPH slider (utilized nearly a quarter of the time). That dastardly combo led to plenty of swings and misses, as Perez punched out 9.07 batters per nine innings in 41.2 frames. Control, however, continued to elude the portly right-hander: he allowed 4.75 BB/9, which led to a 4.33 FIP.

So everyone is here. OK. Bullpen arm and PTBNL, I think, and LaPorta comes up tomorrow (from the other thread).

We get Perez. What team is he going to? Who is Perez?

Didn’t see the other thread, but that’s nice — LaPorta can play every day and Francisco can still get starts when they rest Grady.

Good moves, I think.

The subject lines scared me away. Are we the only team SBNation site that gets it?

Shin-Soo Choo, future U.S. Citizen.

by USSChoo on Jun 28, 2009 12:15 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

At DBN, the Browns’ site, we got most people to stop using them. We’re still working on people at FTS, the Cavs’ site; most regulars don’t use subject lines but we get a lot of new people stopping by who haven’t learned. But I don’t know of any other team site besides the Cleveland ones who don’t use them.

by Buckeye Brad on Jun 28, 2009 10:16 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Before I started DBN, I was a reader/non-poster at LGT. You guys inadvertently nurtured me to refrain from using subject lines over there. Although, I do favor not having a title, regardless.

At least it’s not the days when subject lines were pre-filled in (SBN 1.0)

Dawgs By Nature - Covering the Cleveland Browns on SB Nation.

by Chris Pokorny on Jul 1, 2009 1:15 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually, that’s what led us to this point. Subject lines were pre-filled by default at LGT, but on nearly all other sites, they were blank by default. And I don’t think this was something anyone over here chose, but we definitely developed an attitude that it was strange having to “title” every post, and it was hard to read everyone’s posts if you had to read the subject.

So then SBN 2.0 hits, and nobody’s subjects are auto-filling, here or elsewhere. So right away — and I will take credit for this — I had the idea, let’s see if we can get everyone to just skip the subject, because we never liked reading the subject elsewhere, and it just clutters things up. And people were willing to go along with it.

I actually wrote a suggestion to SBN, asking that either (a) we be allowed to just “turn off” the subject function, so that it would disappear on our site, or (b) that they get rid of subjects for “reply” comments globally, which you would think would be sensible and doable and who would ever miss them? But neither ever happened.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

by Jay on Jul 1, 2009 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The LL guys actually want to require them. I’ve posted on other SBN sites and been asked to use them. I don’t get it — to me it’s like shouting a few words for no apparent reason, Pacino-style. But whatevs. I guess I’ll manage for my 5 annual Brew Crew Ball posts.

It's really awful in game threads

I guess I can tolerate it everywhere else, but what the hell is the point of using a live-updating web app if you’re going to format it like a ’90s AOL forum?

by fleerdon on Jul 1, 2009 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This is sort of the tragedy. With the live-update format, what they’ve done is create a killer hybrid of a forum and a multi-user chat. And the subject line screws it up entirely. Subjects make no sense in a chat, and traditional forum formats were never intended for generating hundreds of messages in a single thread in an hour.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

by Ryan on Jun 27, 2009 11:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

We’re past it.

There’s only 99 days left in the season now, and LaPorta already has 24 days in the majors. That means he can’t amass more than 123 days, which is safely below any past Super 2 threshold.

The bigger problem at this point is Valbuena, who needs just two weeks in the minors to push back his walk year by a full season. He’s got one hit in the last five games, by the way.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

I’m thinking about this and I don’t know. Colby (Rasmus, we’re on a first name basis, meaning I call him by his first name and is unaware of my existence) is a pretty good #2 hitter. He has been struggling recently though so they may move him down. If they keep Colby at #2 DeRo probably bats 4-6 in the lineup is my guess.

Ha, you sound like my wife. She’s mad that the Indians traded DeRosa because he’s one of her “boyfriends” on the team. She’s got quite a few: Grady (of course), Cliff, and Ryan Garko. Casey Blake was one also before he got traded.

by battlekow on Jun 27, 2009 11:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Seriously… if we have a “St Lou needs to make the playoffs for us to choose the PTBNL” clause… then Shapiro isn’t doing his job… with the supposedly robust DeRosa market.

And I don’t mean the other jobs, the poor drafts, the Wedge defense, the crafting of the bullpen, yada, yada… we’re talking about what he does best…. the month before the deadline because we’re way out of it… deadline steal job.

by cheech99 on Jun 27, 2009 11:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Funny, because that’s the same thing people said during the CC trade and then we wound up getting Brantley

Like I said then, for all we know STL might have beaten out other teams for DeRosa’s services by promising to boost the quality of the PTBNL if they made the post season.

So for example, if the market price for DeRosa was A- and C+ level prospects, Shapiro might have squeezed the last drop out of STL by making them upgrade the 2nd player if they made the playoffs

by world dictator on Jun 27, 2009 11:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I get the argument… but I almost feel more people were into DeRosa than C.C. (not saying we weren’t getting a better return from C.C. of course).

C’mon… that whole playoff-centric we get to choose the PTBNL clause was more of a finishing touches point on the deal; I suppose it’s possible it happens again here, just find it unlikely

by cheech99 on Jun 27, 2009 11:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I don’t think it’s likely either. I bet the reason it’s a PTBN at all is that Shapiro wanted extra scouting time.

by Logodaedalus on Jun 27, 2009 11:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, but you’re still not supporting the “PTBNL= Shapiro didn’t do his job” argument, which was my point.

by world dictator on Jun 28, 2009 12:00 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes… I’m not supporting it. If, in your example, the floor side of the equation is only a C+ PTBNL… as opposed to a B/B-… guy.

OK, my head is starting to hurt.

by cheech99 on Jun 28, 2009 9:59 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The way I see it… if it IS playoff combined, it usually opens up the option for a player that the team didn’t want to part with, ala Brantley.

Considering the frequent commentary about Grady’s attractiveness, not to mention the attractiveness of other players, no I wouldn’t consider it sexist.

And of course, I’m not implying that the majority of her comments are about the attractiveness of various players. But it is a common refrain.

Maybe but when you deal with it pretty much every time you say you’re an Indians fan from St. Louis it gets old really fast. When you are constantly told that you only like the Indians because Grady Sizemore is cute it gets a little hard to not take it seriously. And in print it’s hard to tell what someone really thinks.

its ironic that you’re apologizing, because I think that’s a pretty lame clause. Though im intrigued because one would think that if DeRosa resigned with the Cardinals we would get a really good 2nd prospect.

I wonder why that clause was included? Does DeRosa have any times to STL that would make him likely to sign there?

by world dictator on Jun 28, 2009 12:16 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I was only apologizing because I didn’t think the whole contingency PTBNL clause would happen in this deal… clearly that seems to be a possibility.

I’m not apologizing for my dislike for it though… if it is on the table. Did we really need to instill this here? And if so… why not hold out longer and wait for one of the other teams to blink?

by cheech99 on Jun 28, 2009 12:23 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Here’s a few possible anwser:

1. Because Shapiro thinks we can still make a run

2. Because Shapiro really likes Perez as a prospect

3. Because Shapiro was afraid of STL making a move for Holliday. (This is slightly connected to #2)

4. Shapiro preferred the potential list of PTBNL to anything anyone else was offering

5. Shapiro didn’t like the farm system/players of other organizations

Just thinking out loud here

by world dictator on Jun 28, 2009 12:30 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Shapiro might have also been pushing for that clause no matter who he traded DeRosa too

by world dictator on Jun 28, 2009 12:31 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

fine, they get Holliday instead. They aren’t the only team who will need DeRosa at the deadline.

FE WEE

by westbrook on Jun 28, 2009 12:46 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That’s why I said point #3 was connected to #2. If the Indians really like Perez or the idea of a young closer arm, then there’s only so many teams with that kind of ML ready prospect. I can only think of STL off the top of my head.

So if Perez is the guy you prefer out of everyone available then you don’t want STL to acquire Holliday and presumably take them out of the DeRosa bidding

by world dictator on Jun 28, 2009 12:49 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with you 100% on this. Everyone knew the Cardinals were looking for a bat and if Shapiro really loved Perez he wasn’t about to wait too long and miss him.

I kind of agree with you about Perez. But a stud bullpen arm is a stud bullpen arm. If we had a lights out 8th-9th tandum that would be a big boost to our bullpen this year and especially next year

Could be a win win trade here for both of us. Chris Perez has upside and was marked as our closer of the future. The thing is we are stocked with RHP relief pitchers with upside in the minors. I am more worried about the PTBNL

My guess is we are going to deal from our other strengths. If I had to take a guess it would be

Jon Jay, Allen Craig, Ottavino, P.J. Walters, Boggs

Jon Jay would hurt the most. His numbers are down this year but he is a stud defensively and this is the first time he has struggled hitting. Every other hitting report talks about him winning a batting title some day.

I think I like this trade. Re-signing DeRosa next year would have been a luxury for us, when we need to keep costs under control. Meanwhile, even with Perez’ BB happy style, he represents the best performance in our bullpen this year. If he just maintains that, and one of our other pitchers (wood? raffy-L?) regenerates next year, we are halfway to a decent bullpen. Plus, a PTBNL, and one who might even be good! The only question is if there was a better deal for him somewhere else, and I think on that question Shap deserves the benefit of the doubt.

no way is he better than Betancourt was pitching.

is raffy-R even gonna be around next year? Doesn’t he have a five-something million dollar option we would have to pay?

by gmfrodo on Jun 28, 2009 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, $5.4 million option for 2010.

by Voltaire on Jun 28, 2009 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Although that could well be renegotiated.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

by Jay on Jun 28, 2009 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

How so? Guarantee the option, tack on another option year?

by cheech99 on Jun 28, 2009 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You just go to Rafael and say, hey, that 5.4M option, it’s a little pricey. It’s not you, Rafi (this part is a lie), but you know, the damned economy and such. We’d love to keep you around, do you think you could agree to a one-year deal for, say, $3.5 million? Or better yet, give him a two-year deal for $6 million.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Ah, give him the “it’s not you, it’s me”.

If they were to trade Cliff Lee per Jay’s post of Rosenthal’s piece above, I would say the odds are a lot better they pick up Betancourt’s 2010 option… assuming roughly same historical performance when he comes off the DL.

Right now, with the assumed loss of revenue this season and next, if we keep Lee, I think it’s an open question.

also

Chris Pérez 23.2 IP 15BB 30K 4.18 ERA 1.35 WHIP
Rafael Betancourt 26.2 IP 14BB 29K 3.71 ERA 1.39 WHIP

pretty similar. If not better, then tied for best.

So how the hell do I refer to the erstwhile setup ace? Raffy-L or Perez-L?

Though I look right at home, I still feel like an exile

How about Perez-R

by FallsTribeFan on Jun 28, 2009 9:17 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

So … is it too much to hope for an upper level PTBNL?

Pitcher? Mortensen? Walters? Jess Todd?

by FallsTribeFan on Jun 28, 2009 9:18 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don’t think so. I’m sticking with the idea that DeRosa was a very valuable chip with many suitors. There is no reason for Shapiro to trade him for “just a reliever” — even one as impressive as Chris Perez — without another equally substantial chip in the mix.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

by Jay on Jun 28, 2009 10:25 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I feel like Shapiro is giving us his code phrase again, the same one he used to clue us in that we were getting a valuable PTBNL for CC.

by Roger Dorn on Jun 28, 2009 11:02 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It’s not really “code” if he’s coming right out and saying it, is it?

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Reading reactions across the internet, I would either people didn’t hear his comment or are still mistaking it

by Roger Dorn on Jun 28, 2009 11:41 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

They are unfamiliar with the concept of the non-trivial PTBNL. To be honest, I can’t really think of any other GM who has extracted one.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

In any case, trade evaluation is incomplete until we know who the player is

interesting – you might be right.

There are probably more successful Rule V picks than PTBNLs.

Someone will probably embarrass me here. That’s an Underwood-esque random observation that I didn’t bother researching.

If its true that Jess Todd is on the PTBNL list, this could be a real coup. Two ML-ready relievers for 2010? I would say that is a fair return for DeRo

by gmfrodo on Jun 28, 2009 2:57 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

It’s a lot better than the Cubs got for him.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

I’m catching up from a weekend away and I really agree with this sentiment. I like this trade a lot.

On the other hand, I’m canceling my MLB.tv subscription tomorrow.
