FWIW, I found this on Twitter. Someone with Cardinals inside knowledge named Drew Silva posted:
Francisco Samuel and Jess Todd are on the short list of possible PTBNLs to finalize the Mark DeRosa deal. That’s uh… interesting.
Keith Law had Samuel as the Cardinals 10th rated prospect. BA has Todd as the Cards 4th rated prospect. Both are pitchers
Yes, yes. I’m aware both of us could list people all day long, and neither would be definitively correct. And I’d obviously rather have well-thought of young pitchers than non-“prospects.” They just make me nervous, is all.
Il faut d'abord durer.
Great strikeout ability. Control needs improvement and his motion lends itself to heightened injury risk
I saw him pitch in person, and he had some nasty stuff
I disagree; I would rate Droobs above a 3.
I'm not really into Song of Hiawatha.

I’m a little different here, but I’d rather see the whole league adopt the DH. Every team plays every other team during the season, and you play your division opponents more often than the rest of the league. Kind of like the NFL
That would ease my dislike, since if I wanted to watch bad hitters bat I would just splice together footage of Josh Barfield.

Shoppach sucks…if he doesn’t get blunked or wiff at three in a row, he’s a great rally killer with his killer speed and greatness to hit into DPs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We’ve got catchers waiting in the wings. He’s a backup catcher playing everyday.
by MooneysRebellion on Jun 28, 2009 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions
He has 139 ABs. Compared to Victor Martinez, who plays every day, has 288 ABs. That is not playing everyday
No other team pitches their backup catcher 2 out of every 5 days. Hell, most teams may only play their backup catcher one every 7 days. Why? I don’t care if you’ve had historically great numbers…if you’re not getting it done now…you need to sit.

by Julie on Jun 28, 2009 1:55 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
I consider myself a personal example. My junior year of college I started off the season with a +5 era while going 0-4 in my first 5 starts of the season. I was benched for my next two starts and then finished the season 4-2 with a final era of around 3.5 after getting my head on straight. I’ve seen it with numerous other guys in my playing career.
by MooneysRebellion on Jun 28, 2009 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions
Frankly every hit is in the “clutch”. You go out their trying to get a hit everytime, if you are truly playing the game correctly.

by MooneysRebellion on Jun 28, 2009 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions
His defensive skills seem to be dropping as well. I’m all for playing him if he’s throwing guys out…if that’s the case I don’t care about his offensive numbers. But he’s not doing that anymore. He’s allowing more pastballs this year too. Now, that could be partially attributed to a bad pitching staff, I don’t know…but his defense is going down
by MooneysRebellion on Jun 28, 2009 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Hey, salome!
I went to a store the other day where I saw t-shirts with that cartoon character, and I couldn’t find one.
So, seriously, I might be losing my freaking mind.
I just want to say that right now, I’m not a fan of the DeRosa trade. My opinion on that could change, pending Perez II’s performance.
I believe in Carl Pavano.
That wouldn’t have been a good option, and I guess now was a good time to trade based on his value. I just don’t like it. I didn’t like the Blake trade, either. I basically never want to lose the players I like, and I know that’s not logical.
I believe in Carl Pavano.
Are we not allowed. Well darn. I broke that rule.
Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?
I just got here. I have a hard time reading things that have already been said so I didn’t know I wasn’t allowed.
Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?
That’s why I have a hard time. Sometimes I get mixed up.
Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?
I love when players look upward when something good happens. Because if there’s a god, it’s presumably very invested in whether your batted ball finds a hole.
I think it’s more of an appreciation thing. Like thank you for giving me the talent to be able to do that. I don’t mind it all.
Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?
That’s an interesting way to look at it… I suppose if that’s it then it seems a lot less presumptuous… I’m not convinced that’s the usual thing, but I obviously have no idea.
by Logodaedalus on Jun 28, 2009 3:20 PM EDT up reply actions
As long as it’s appreciative of having the talent, as opposed to appreciative of helping the ball go through or whatever, then I guess I don’t mind.

I have always thought they were thanking God for making the play possible, like you. That is why I find it funny.
I’ve heard too many celebrities/sports figures thank God for specific wins/awards/what-have-you to think it’s a general sign of appreciation.
I believe in Carl Pavano.
Yeah… I have a feeling that, whatever they’d tell you if you asked, some non-small proportion of players who do that are thinking about God having had a hand in the outcome of the event itself. Which is absurd.

I actually don’t get why so many people here don’t like Underwood. He doesn’t bother me. He’s not actively enjoyable to listen to, but he rarely makes me cringe. Manning says more inane things, seems to me.

Underwood is goofy and strikes me as a bit dim.
Manning is snide, but not clever enough for the snideness to be amusing.
Manning pisses me off with his attitude. I don’t think Underwood gets that he’s being mocked.
I believe in Carl Pavano.
Yeah but Underwood’s dumb. I don’t care that much that Manning mocks him. I’m used to Al Harabosky and Dan MacGlaughlin (I’m not sure I spelled either of those last names right) and Al is a lot meaner to Dan than Rick is to Matt.

by Logodaedalus on Jun 28, 2009 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions
Almost certainly for the same reason salome mentions upthread. It’s just kinda depressing to see a player you’ve watched and have grown to like being traded away.
But it’s not as if he was a fixture with the team… he was an Indian for less than half a season! I mean, I’m not faulting salome for feeling a little sad about losing him, for a little while, but how hard is it to get the concept that once you’re out of the race, you have nothing to lose by trading guys who are gone after the year anyway?
I would think you’d (generic you’d) at least withhold judgment until we find out who the PTBNL is.
by Logodaedalus on Jun 28, 2009 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions
The average fan doesn’t regard DeRosa as automatically gone at the end of the year. He sees keeping DeRosa (and others like him) as a decision that the team can make more or less at will. He doesn’t understand why the team would choose consistently to trade away DeRosas rather than keeping solid veterans around.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
Yeah, I’m sure it’s partly that, partly denial about the season being over, and partly just an emotional response of the sort Julie and salome are talking about.
