Early word on Astro: shoulder dislocated, "potential" for DL
Pretty much what we expected, from the AP game recap:
"Cabrera said he dislocated the shoulder and they had to pop it back in. X-rays did not reveal any damage, but Cabrera will have an MRI tomorrow.
'There’s potential for the DL, but we’ll have to wait and see,' Indians manager Eric Wedge said."
UPDATE (Ryan): Cabrera has been placed on the DL, with Josh Barfield replacing him on the 25-man roster.

I’ve dislocated my shoulder and I can promise you that putting it back in is not nearly so easy as Wedge made it sound. I am assuming Mario will know what the possible long term ramifications of this are.
I become an expert simply by doing something.

Yeah I had quite a bit to say about this in the game thread last night. Bottom line is that I’m not optimistic about him playing again this year.

I’m a pro at dislocating my shoulder (in the double digits for my right one and about seven times with the left) and yeah its not pleasant. As Mario said, he may be out the rest of the year. You really really don’t want to reinjure it before it can properly heal.

Could be. I’d much rather see LaPorta come up to put DeRosa back into third base.

I think LaPorta makes more sense. Now that Sizemore’s on the DL, he should be able to play every day.

I suggested this in the game thread, but there are other guys already on the 40-man that probably make more sense. Barfield being first and foremost.

I’d like to think this is Jhonny back to short and Marte up, but I’m assuming Wedge will be using this as his long-awaited excuse to bat Carroll leadoff and start him at shortstop.

The problem with this is that Agent M is not currently on the 40-man roster. The only way this is likely to happen is if Astrocab has to go on the 60-day DL.
by woodsmeister on Jun 3, 2009 9:37 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
And plus, what would it gain to have Agent M up on the big team, just riding the pines every day, with DeRosa at third, Peralta at short and Carroll at second? He’d never get an at bat.

I think we mean, after DeRosa gets flipped.
by fleerdon on Jun 3, 2009 9:26 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Even then. Wedge would play eight guys on the field before he put AM in.

I can’t believe Marte will ever be on the team while Wedge is around, short of four months of total domination in Columbus, which he has not had. I am not even rooting for him to be promoted, at all.

Why Wedge, then? If its generally recognized that certain players/prospects cannot coexist with a manager for reasons unrelated to performance, then the manager should have his ass fired on the spot.
by mcrose on Jun 3, 2009 11:20 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Shouldn’t it be the other way around?
If a player cannot coexist with a manager for reasons unrelated to performance, then the player should not be on the team.
No manager will ever be fired for not getting along with a prospect who has never performed well at the major league level.
by AllenSmith on Jun 3, 2009 12:08 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
If it’s clear that Marte really hasn’t done anything to warrant the treatment, then I think the problem lies with the manager
by Roger Dorn on Jun 3, 2009 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Despite who has the problem, I don’t think that it is reasonable to fire Wedge just so that Marte can have a chance
by AllenSmith on Jun 3, 2009 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You would think that Shapiro could figure out a less extreme way of handling the issue. Something to the effect of “I’m calling Marte up, you have to play him x% of games”. I mean the manager and the player don’t have to get along for there to be success on the field. This isn’t basketball.
by jakesinger777 on Jun 3, 2009 1:46 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It’s not so Marte can have a chance. Its the general issue that if a player warrants promotion, the manager shouldn’t stand in the way.
I was just struck by the seemingly unanimous assumption that it wasn’t worthwhile bringing up Marte with Wedge in the dugout. Something’s wrong with this picture, and it ain’t Marte.
by mcrose on Jun 3, 2009 3:22 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
While I agree, he’s right. You don’t get rid of the manager over Marte.

This point (and its variants) are academic. If it’s Marte vs. the manager, then the problem with the manager is larger than just Marte.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

I agree with this. I don’t want Marte up until Wedge is gone
by Roger Dorn on Jun 3, 2009 12:32 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think the decision depends on what our long-term plan is. If we’re planning on keeping JP at third, then why not let him play there the rest of the season and develop his defense. It makes no sense to bring Marte up whether or not Wedge is the manager and whether or not we flip DeRosa if that’s our plan.

Because we don’t have another short stop.

Besides DeRosa, Carroll and Valbuena, you mean.
by woodsmeister on Jun 3, 2009 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
DeRosa: 79 career starts at SS, 0 in the past 3 years (including this year), no more than 10 starts in any year since 2002.
Carroll: 46 career starts at SS, 0 in the past 2 years (including this year), 12 in the past 4 years.
Valbuena: 16 games at SS in his minor league career (almost 500 games). I see no indication that he knows how to play SS.
Point is, you are right. There are people you can stick there. But I am also right. We don’t have another shortstop.
by jakesinger777 on Jun 3, 2009 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
My understanding is that Carroll is a very fine shortstop, he’s just been on teams that haven’t needed him to step in there.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
by Jay on Jun 3, 2009 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Completely anecdotally, I saw Carroll at 2B, SS, and 3B for the Rockies and I think that’s the order of his best defensive positions. In any event, my suggestion relies on two premises: (1) we want to see Jhonny develop at 3rd; and (2) we’re not making the playoffs this year. If that’s the case, then my plan makes sense and it doesn’t much matter if we let Carroll fill in at short until Astrocab is back healthy.

Hafner’s rehab stint is supposed to end today. If he’s ready, it’s possible that he gets activated and Droobs goes on the DL.
by woodsmeister on Jun 3, 2009 9:46 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
This is probably the most logical … although they’re talking about Hafner coming back Friday.
Cabrera is apparently saying he doesn’t think he’ll need to go on the DL … which is dangerous to me.

If he comes back too soon and gets reinjured someone actually needs to be fired. This is just too obvious a potential for reinjury. It’s one thing to have no idea what they’re doing with vague elbow, shoulder and oblique pain….but this is an obvious structural issue. Considering the zeal with which they seem to jump to TJ surgery, this should really be no different. Let this puppy heal, or get it repaired, but AstroCab is a valuable asset for years to come and this is not a championship team.

Hafner will be back on Friday. Then Friday comes, and they say, Hafner should be back next week. Doesn’t his 20-game rehab end Wednesday (today)? If he can’t be called up he has to go back on the DL. No indications he is ready to go yet.

We have surpassed DL stints from last year, yes? My God what is going on? There is really no one to blame, right? I mean this is luck…You can’t blame managmeent and medical staff for these types of injuries, right? Soloff is one of the best, right?
And…I’m distraught. Very. Any chance we can forfeit the season or turn the calendar to opening day, 2010?

Here is something I’m struggling with. So DL players still come to the games and sit in the dugout with the rest of the team, right? I mean, I saw at least Reyes sitting there during last night’s game. Two questions: do relief pitchers sit in the regular dugout or in the bullpen? What happens when our dugout gets too crowded? I think these are both very serious concerns.

When they’re on the DL? I dunno, look for Betancourt’s presence in the dugout. If you don’t see him, he’s probably in the bullpen.
During Cliff’s brief 2007 stint as a reliever, he had his ass firmly planted in the dugout, though.
I believe in Carl Pavano.

Not that this is that relevant, but…
I watched batting practice before Friday’s game vs. NY and both Reyes and Smith were in the OF shagging fly balls. After each caught one though, they would transfer the ball to their glove hand and throw it in, either overhand or underhand.
Very Jim Abbottesque and kind of odd to see.
Also, Kerry Wood robbed someone of a BP HR in right-center right in front of us.
It was pretty impressive stuff.

Reyes and Smith were throwing lefty?
FE WEE
by westbrook on Jun 3, 2009 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yep.
Smith could really wheel it back in overhand with his LH, but Reyes would just kind of roll it in towards the screen with his LH. Reyes also had a giant rubber tube on his right arm that would prevent him from bending at the elbow at all.
Braylon Edwards was also shagging balls.
You can insert your obligatory joke here; but, no…he did not catch any that were hit to him.

Showing you how out of my mind the Browns are, I sat there for 15 minutes looking at the guy in the full Tribe uni that said “EDWARDS 17” on the back with no idea who that might be or if I had missed some sort of transaction.
