Early word on Astro: shoulder dislocated, "potential" for DL
Pretty much what we expected, from the AP game recap:
"Cabrera said he dislocated the shoulder and they had to pop it back in. X-rays did not reveal any damage, but Cabrera will have an MRI tomorrow.
'There’s potential for the DL, but we’ll have to wait and see,' Indians manager Eric Wedge said."
UPDATE (Ryan): Cabrera has been placed on the DL, with Josh Barfield replacing him on the 25-man roster.

I’ve dislocated my shoulder and I can promise you that putting it back in is not nearly so easy as Wedge made it sound. I am assuming Mario will know what the possible long term ramifications of this are.
I become an expert simply by doing something.
Yeah I had quite a bit to say about this in the game thread last night. Bottom line is that I’m not optimistic about him playing again this year.

But … it looked so easy in the Lethal Weapon movies!
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

I suggested this in the game thread, but there are other guys already on the 40-man that probably make more sense. Barfield being first and foremost.

I’d like to think this is Jhonny back to short and Marte up, but I’m assuming Wedge will be using this as his long-awaited excuse to bat Carroll leadoff and start him at shortstop.

Yeah, I don’t think it’s going to be all that buena.

And plus, what would it gain to have Agent M up on the big team, just riding the pines every day, with DeRosa at third, Peralta at short and Carroll at second? He’d never get an at bat.
I can’t believe Marte will ever be on the team while Wedge is around, short of four months of total domination in Columbus, which he has not had. I am not even rooting for him to be promoted, at all.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Why Wedge, then? If its generally recognized that certain players/prospects cannot coexist with a manager for reasons unrelated to performance, then the manager should have his ass fired on the spot.
Shouldn’t it be the other way around?
If a player cannot coexist with a manager for reasons unrelated to performance, then the player should not be on the team.
No manager will ever be fired for not getting along with a prospect who has never performed well at the major league level.
If it’s clear that Marte really hasn’t done anything to warrant the treatment, then I think the problem lies with the manager
Despite who has the problem, I don’t think that it is reasonable to fire Wedge just so that Marte can have a chance
You would think that Shapiro could figure out a less extreme way of handling the issue. Something to the effect of “I’m calling Marte up, you have to play him x% of games”. I mean the manager and the player don’t have to get along for there to be success on the field. This isn’t basketball.
by jakesinger777 on Jun 3, 2009 1:46 PM EDT up reply actions
It’s not so Marte can have a chance. Its the general issue that if a player warrants promotion, the manager shouldn’t stand in the way.
I was just struck by the seemingly unanimous assumption that it wasn’t worthwhile bringing up Marte with Wedge in the dugout. Something’s wrong with this picture, and it ain’t Marte.
This point (and its variants) are academic. If it’s Marte vs. the manager, then the problem with the manager is larger than just Marte.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

I think the decision depends on what our long-term plan is. If we’re planning on keeping JP at third, then why not let him play there the rest of the season and develop his defense. It makes no sense to bring Marte up whether or not Wedge is the manager and whether or not we flip DeRosa if that’s our plan.

Because we don’t have another short stop.
by jakesinger777 on Jun 3, 2009 12:48 PM EDT up reply actions
DeRosa: 79 career starts at SS, 0 in the past 3 years (including this year), no more than 10 starts in any year since 2002.
Carroll: 46 career starts at SS, 0 in the past 2 years (including this year), 12 in the past 4 years.
Valbuena: 16 games at SS in his minor league career (almost 500 games). I see no indication that he knows how to play SS.
Point is, you are right. There are people you can stick there. But I am also right. We don’t have another shortstop.
by jakesinger777 on Jun 3, 2009 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions
My understanding is that Carroll is a very fine shortstop, he’s just been on teams that haven’t needed him to step in there.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Completely anecdotally, I saw Carroll at 2B, SS, and 3B for the Rockies and I think that’s the order of his best defensive positions. In any event, my suggestion relies on two premises: (1) we want to see Jhonny develop at 3rd; and (2) we’re not making the playoffs this year. If that’s the case, then my plan makes sense and it doesn’t much matter if we let Carroll fill in at short until Astrocab is back healthy.

Hafner’s rehab stint is supposed to end today. If he’s ready, it’s possible that he gets activated and Droobs goes on the DL.
This is probably the most logical … although they’re talking about Hafner coming back Friday.
Cabrera is apparently saying he doesn’t think he’ll need to go on the DL … which is dangerous to me.

This is when the training staff needs to say, “Yes you do. Off to the DL we go. Everyone’s there it’s not bad, really.”

If he comes back too soon and gets reinjured someone actually needs to be fired. This is just too obvious a potential for reinjury. It’s one thing to have no idea what they’re doing with vague elbow, shoulder and oblique pain….but this is an obvious structural issue. Considering the zeal with which they seem to jump to TJ surgery, this should really be no different. Let this puppy heal, or get it repaired, but AstroCab is a valuable asset for years to come and this is not a championship team.

I guess it’s true they don’t rush people back. It’s the getting them to admit there’s a problem that takes forever.

Say, I didn’t see the play, what exactly happened?
We have surpassed DL stints from last year, yes? My God what is going on? There is really no one to blame, right? I mean this is luck…You can’t blame managmeent and medical staff for these types of injuries, right? Soloff is one of the best, right?
And…I’m distraught. Very. Any chance we can forfeit the season or turn the calendar to opening day, 2010?
OK, on to the valium for me.
Here is something I’m struggling with. So DL players still come to the games and sit in the dugout with the rest of the team, right? I mean, I saw at least Reyes sitting there during last night’s game. Two questions: do relief pitchers sit in the regular dugout or in the bullpen? What happens when our dugout gets too crowded? I think these are both very serious concerns.
Not that this is that relevant, but…
I watched batting practice before Friday’s game vs. NY and both Reyes and Smith were in the OF shagging fly balls. After each caught one though, they would transfer the ball to their glove hand and throw it in, either overhand or underhand.
Very Jim Abbottesque and kind of odd to see.
Also, Kerry Wood robbed someone of a BP HR in right-center right in front of us.
It was pretty impressive stuff.
by The DiaTriber on Jun 3, 2009 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions
Yep.
Smith could really wheel it back in overhand with his LH, but Reyes would just kind of roll it in towards the screen with his LH. Reyes also had a giant rubber tube on his right arm that would prevent him from bending at the elbow at all.
Braylon Edwards was also shagging balls.
You can insert your obligatory joke here; but, no…he did not catch any that were hit to him.

He did, though that happened before we got there.
Showing you how out of my mind the Browns are, I sat there for 15 minutes looking at the guy in the full Tribe uni that said “EDWARDS 17” on the back with no idea who that might be or if I had missed some sort of transaction.
Only when my brother said, “Hey look, it’s Braylon” did the light bulb go off for me. Not that I was particularly excited, but it took the mystery out of the equation.

There are pro golfers who play practice rounds with their non-dominant hand to work on timing and promote muscular balance. Could be a similar strategy.

In a chess game this is where I would trip and “accidentally” knock the game board over.
If you believe it's just a game, you're also probably wondering why Santa keeps skipping your house every year.

Is there a suggestion box anywhere for our new alternate uniforms for the 2010 season? Here is what I came up with:

Force quit and move to trash.
No way, it’s Jhonny. Look at those cheeks.

yeah, because if everyone had noticed it, they would have HAD to rec it or comment on it. i mean, it’s that good – if you do say so yourself.
You got a rec from me on principle.

I didn’t rec it on the grounds that if someone has to explain the punchline to me, no matter how funny it is, I’m probably not going to laugh as hard.
Tough break, Iron. I owe you one.

Do we think we can contend next year? I assumed DeRosa was going to be jettisoned for something useful (the Cardinals deal sounds about right), but I hadn’t thought of Pavano’s situation yet. I’d hope we could get a cheap deal out of him for a couple more years.
Then again I wouldn’t blame him for wanting more years/money than a man with one good year deserves.
