Cleveland Indians at Chicago White Sox, Jun 5, 2009 8:11 PM EDT
I'll have more to say later about Richard Jacobs and his place in Indians history. For now, it suffices to say that we as Indians fans were very lucky that it was he and his brother that bought the team in 1986.
INDIANS (23-33): CF Ben Francisco, 3B Mark DeRosa, 1B Victor Martinez, LF Shin-Soo Choo, SS Jhonny Peralta, DH Travis Hafner, RF Ryan Garko, C Kelly Shoppach, 2B Josh Barfield. RHP Carl Pavano (5-4, 5.29).
WHITE SOX (25-28): LF Scott Podsednik, SS Alexei Ramirez, DH Jim Thome, 1B Paul Konerko, C A.J. Pierzynski, CF Brian Anderson, RF DeWayne Wise, 3B Gordon Beckham, 2B Chris Getz. LHP John Danks (4-3, 4.80).

I’m going to say something that I didn’t think I would at the beginning of the year.. I’m really glad Pavano is starting today.

I thought there was a possibility I would say that at the beginning of the year.

Is Chicago’s outfield weird enough to warrant Choo in RF and Garko in LF?

I think Carl Pavano’s return to baseball at the beginning of the season was the least impressive I have ever seen.

Come on, now, the sequels are, at the very least, better than 95% of all other sequels.

Force quit and move to trash.
Damning with faint praise.
Were they really, truly, demonstrably that much better than Police Academy II? I think not.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
IMDB ratings:
Back to the Future 2 – 7.2/10
Police Academy 2 – 4.8/10
The people have spoken.
"I gotta be honest, I dunno much about the climate in Japan." - Matt Underwood
Oh, no you don’t. Let’s look at ratings as percentage of the original film’s rating.
Police Academy – 5.5
Police Academy 2 – 4.8 — 87% as good
Back to the Future – 8.3
Back to the Future II – 7.4 — 89% as good
Back to the Future III – 7.0 — 84% as good
And just by the way, the original films are underrated in both cases, in my opinion.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
But you must in turn argue that an 11 % drop off is much harder to achieve on something ranked intitially 66% higher. Skewing the only 2% difference in drop off.

Carl Pavano, 2009 Comeback Player of the Year?
"I gotta be honest, I dunno much about the climate in Japan." - Matt Underwood
No offense, but I think you have to judge the comeback of Pavano as more remarkable when you consider how long he’s been a non-factor in baseball.
-Erik
I guess it depends on how you view the award. Victor came back from one season (injury, few home runs when healthy) and is playing at a superstar level. Pavano was icompletely rrelevant for several seasons, but his ERA is still up near 5.00 this season. We, of course, take away his first start. But you really shouldn’t.
I want to see Pavano toss a complete game shutout. Forget the bullpen.

Anyone interested in picking up Tommy Glavine? He can’t be any worse than what we’ve seen from the bottom half of the rotation.
by Cleveland Indians on Jun 5, 2009 10:15 PM EDT reply actions
Well since technically Fausto was our number 2, Glavine would be an improvement behind Lee.

This is pretty sweet vindication for those of us who had enough sense to look beyond his ERA and see that Carl had been pitching pretty well all season (except his first game of course).

So, everyone who follows the Indians? Or just everyone here? I don’t think appreciation of Pavano’s performance this season is all that controversial.

by Manhattan Tribe Fan on Jun 6, 2009 1:45 AM EDT up reply actions
No. The issue isn’t really ERA as a stat, as the fact that we always are looking at season-to-date numbers. We say, “his ERA has been over 5.00 all year,” but that statement doesn’t have much meaning.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
by Jay on Jun 6, 2009 3:29 PM EDT up reply actions
My point was simply that even casual fans (like my dad) recognize that Pavano has pitched well, despite his season-to-date ERA. I don’t see the need for vindication.

I guess we found our replacement for CC.
Carl Pavano 6-4 4.62 72 IP, 15 BB, 56 K
CC Sabathia 5-3 3.46 78 IP, 24 BB, 56 K
So of course it is reasonable to expect Okha to be a reasonable facsimile of 2007 Carmona.

Apparently good game by Pavano and the Tribe. I’m off to look at the box score. I missed y’all while blowing whistles at trouble-making children who won’t stay off the wall between the lazy river and the rest of the pool. This was apparently a lot of fun and I should work parties more often I guess.
Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?
Lazy river? You should stay out of the amusement parks and find a public pool where you can keep kids from having fun without the pangs of conscience. Take it from a former professional lifesaver.

Amusement Park? MTF hasn’t been to a public pool lately. Unless you actually work at an amusement park, in which case I feel a little stupid.
I can honestly say I’ve never been to a public pool with a lazy river. And without getting too political, I’d like those tax dollars back, thank you very much.

It’s a public pool. Almost every public pool in St. Louis County has one. And Webster’s a fairly old pool. It’s had a lazy river for as long as I can remember.
