Game 57: Indians 6, White Sox 0
On the day the Indians sent the Fausto Carmona on an extended sabbatical, Carl Pavano, of whom not much was expected, easily shut out the White Sox, allowing just three hits. Chicago's bats have been dormant lately, having been shut out twice in their last series against Oakland, and Pavano took advantage of them by establishing his pitches in the strike zone early. White Sox hitters swung early in the strike zone, and made quick outs on weak grounders and pop flies. Those easy innings allowed Pavano, who normally loses his effectiveness before getting to 100 pitches, to throw his hundredth pitch with two outs in the ninth inning.
Travis Hafner was back in the lineup, and that meant Eric Wedge had to get creative in order to fit Ryan Garko in the lineup, since Kelly Shoppach was Pavano's personal catcher. He placed Garko in right field, and although US Cellular's outfield isn't that spacious, it was a defensive gamble. It worked, for Garko hit a home run in the sixth inning to push the Indians lead to 5-0. Wedge pulled Garko soon afterwards for a better defensive arrangement. Pronk hit a home run as well, lining a Danks offspeed mistake into the right field bleachers in the fifth.
The Indians right now have two hot pitchers in Cliff Lee and Pavano, and essentially nothing else in the rotation. But with Detroit losing tonight, the Indians, even at 24-33, are just 6 games back. Granted, there are four teams still ahead of them, which makes 6-game deficit a lot more difficult to overcome, but if the Indians can hang around until the end of the month, they have the talent to make a run at this division. They'd have absolutely no chance in any other division, but in this year's AL Central it's still anybody's season. The key is getting even mediocrity from Jeremy Sowers and David Huff, who are going to be in the rotation through at least the end of this month.
Next Up: Sowers vs. Floyd, 4:05 PM

With Phillies-Dodgers as the lead game, you will need to be within 200 miles of Cleveland or Chicago or in Maine, to see Saturday’s game on Fox.
Is St. Louis within 200 miles of Chicago? I am so bad with this stuff I have no idea. I actually assume we get the Dodgers. Which sucks.
Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?
About 300, you might stand a fighting chance.

No. We always get the Dodgers. Because apparently St. Louisans really care about LA.
Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?
LA thinks everyone cares about LA.

Yes they do but shockingly I don’t care at all about either of the baseball teams there and the only caring I do for the Lakers is hating them. Actually I don’t really care about LA at all except for The Hills.

West Coast envy. Its alright. I would be too if I were you

In fairness, the Dodgers are both a popular and storied team, and the Phillies are the defending champs.
I just have become mellow on this subject. I don’t ever expect to get the Indians televised on a Saturday afternoon.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

None of these points matter. They should have one national game or at least let people who pay for things like mlb.tv use it to watch the games they can’t see because Fox decides who is interested in what.

let people who pay for things like mlb.tv use it to watch the games they can’t see because Fox decides who is interested in what.
I mean, seriously. Those who are dedicated enough to buy MLB TV are presumably mostly diehard fans of a team. The ad revenue gained by blacking out the other games can’t be much compared to the ill will they incite against the network. Besides which, what’s to stop them from having a deal with mlb.com whereby they can still show their ads on the internet feeds?
They matter as far as which game is shown in markets across the country. But, you’re right, you should be able to watch the other games on mlb.tv that aren’t shown by Fox. That’s ridiculous.
Since they revised the blackout rule slightly this year, there are very few blacked-out games that aren’t being shown on Fox. The problem is with the Fox games that you can’t see in your specific locality.
I agree that they should show all the Fox games on MLB.tv and MLB-EI, and I have to think there’s a way to deal with the advertising that would make it work. The whole “blackout” concept stems from what I believe is a misconception about baseball fans. I think very few fans have more than a slight interest in watching any game that doesn’t involve their own team, with very few exceptions.
Baseball is much more focused on the home team — to the exclusion of interest in other clubs — than basketball or football. That is why the postseason ratings are so terrible — it isn’t that baseball is unpopular, it’s just that in any given market, the other 29 teams are unpopular. And that is why a “game of the week” with local blackouts never really made any sense.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Yes. This is exactly what I was alluding to… Personally if I have a choice between listening to a Tribe game with no picture and watching some other team on TV, I’ll go with the former every time. Blacking me out of the Indians has no benefit to Fox — I’m just going to switch to radio, not watch the game they do let me see. I’m guessing that most MLB.tv subscribers (perhaps even most baseball fans) are the same way.

Yeah, Neyer has written about this recently. I guess MLB had a meeting recently about the blackout and territorial rules but didn’t make any changes, which he found very upsetting. Baseball can be very slow with these changes too many times. Since I live in Columbus I don’t have to worry about any of these problems but I can understand the frustrations of those who do.

If Fox wont show the Indians game, I’m sure you can watch live streams online for free. Today’s game was on Sticktv.com. It’s an adventure looking for the correct site that will actually broadcast a White Sox or Indians game, though. I’ll look for a link tomorrow and post it here if I find one.

What is Pavano’s adjusted ERA if we omit the start from hell?

do we know what his FIP minus aforementioned start from hell?

that’s sick nasty.
is it a stretch to say Pavano is one of the best pitchers in the league right now?

doesn’t look like it.
a FIP of 3.20 would place him in 5th in the AL. His 3.55 has him in 12th

Thankfully, we get a day off Monday, too — and Chicago’s rotation is just as bad as ours. Sowers and Huff have decent match-ups this weekend, then we get Lee and Pavano back to back Tuesday and Wednesday.
I think we get Greinke next week, though (although he got hit hard today).
Westbrook starts for Akron tomorrow!
-Kyle
i almost wish we were 18 out….this makes it all the more painful-HOPE. But really man, it is encouraging to think we could get Westbrook back. And if and when Grady and Droobs get back…Nah, we suck still.
It should be noted that one hitter really swung the bat well tonight…Josh Barfield!! Probably just a one-game aberration, but he was really on most everything tonight.
Hamilton, obviously getting carried away, said JB’s ninth-inning at-bat against Blobby was his best as an Indian.
I caught that and I laughed. But just because he was carried away doesn’t mean he wasn’t right.

The Tribe leads the majors in games played, with 57. There are a few other teams with 56, but the Indians have played the most. Will this help as the season goes on? Does it bode well that there may be days off later in the summer? Will it help them play better in the second half?

What is our starting pitching depth chart right now, I wonder, beyond Lee, Pavano, Sowers, Huff? Any guesses?
wow – looking at the numbers, Pavano is on pace to be about 4 wins above replacement. If he does that, he’ll be somewhere in the neighborhood of a top-30 pitcher. This one already looks like a huge win for Shapiro & co.
Anyway, as expected, the X-rays revealed a fracture of the joint at the tip of the finger, but it’s not anything that affects Carroll on throws, and, therefore, it’s nothing he can’t play through. “The doctor looked at me like I should be hurting worse than I am,” Caroll said. The finger is on the same hand Carroll broke earlier this year.
You would think that has to effect your swing, too.
I’m still not sure how it doesn’t affect his throwing.. its the tip of his middle finger of his throwing hand. I don’t fully understand that.

I was thinking the same thing. Isn’t the tip of his middle finger what is ruining the career of Adam Miller?
