Going by the article it should have absolutely no effect.

That article linked above? Am I missing something? I don’t see anything indicating either way in that little piece.

by afh4 on Jul 1, 2009 12:09 PM EDT up reply actions

He incurred the injury, if it exists, while playing for St. Louis. He wasn’t damaged goods. It’s probably a sprain. All of that seems to point in that direction.

But last year, for instance, our PTBNL was tied to making the playoffs. This year, I’ve seen speculation of a similar thing, but linked to them re-signing DeRo or to a playoff run even. I’m not sure if it’s allowed to be tied to DeRosa’s actual performance or to an AB threshold but with Shapiro that all seems in play to me.

by afh4 on Jul 1, 2009 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I hope you’re wrong. But, you may be right.

Remember when we traded for John Smiley (and he promptly broke his arm, ending his career)? We needed that deal back then.

I’m not crying over Damian Jackson.

Though I look right at home, I still feel like an exile

by Manhattan Tribe Fan on Jul 1, 2009 1:36 PM EDT up reply actions

True. But Danny Graves was a pretty good pitcher for a while.

by peter m on Jul 1, 2009 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, I thought of Graves at the centerpiece rather than as a PTBNL-level throw-in. Of course, I was 13 and Graves and Jackson were the only guys in the deal I’d ever heard of.

(Pause for research)

Yep, they’re still the only ones I’ve heard of.

Though I look right at home, I still feel like an exile

by Manhattan Tribe Fan on Jul 1, 2009 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, and in the end, we did get Graves back (sob).

by peter m on Jul 1, 2009 5:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought I saw a piece either by Hoynes or Castro that the PTBNL is our choice and not tied to St Louis’ or DeRosa’s performance. I’ll dig.

by JK in CBus on Jul 1, 2009 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions

If that’s true and Todd and Samuel are on the list, bravo Shap, bravo.

by afh4 on Jul 1, 2009 12:30 PM EDT up reply actions

This says its not tied to the Cardinals performance. It also gives support to the idea that the Indians will do the picking from a pre-determined list.

by JK in CBus on Jul 1, 2009 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions

It also says the Indians have until the end of the minor league season to pick. If that’s phrased correctly, it means they could choose earlier. That would mean it couldn’t be tied to performance. But, it could also be poor writing.

by peter m on Jul 1, 2009 12:53 PM EDT up reply actions

To the link and that it happened while with the Cardinals, not prior to the trade.

by JK in CBus on Jul 1, 2009 12:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow, seems like that is something that would happen to us (going the other way, I mean).

Il faut d'abord durer.

No, no. Players we acquire just become horrible, immediately. No injury necessary. See:

Perez, Chris
Dellucci, David
Wood, Kerry
Nixon, Trot

by peter m on Jul 1, 2009 12:25 PM EDT up reply actions

oh… I thought you were trying to say he was horrible.

There are actually a lot of good counterpoints but those four guys are still making me pretty sad.

Perez to Have Tests on Head

Given the velocity drop and control problems, I’m not sure Perez isn’t damaged goods.

FTF, you have been nothing but a pleasure since you joined. Great addition to the blog. Should’ve been here for 2007.

Nixon? Really? I don’t think anyone expected much more the veteran, gritty presence from him. We got that and pie.

by drerikbrady on Jul 1, 2009 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions

You don’t think the Indians expected more than a .677 OPS and the worst defensive outfielder in the league?

by afh4 on Jul 1, 2009 1:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn’t. His OPS dropped from .975 in 2003 to .804 in 2005, and he had only 167 PAs in 2004. Then it dropped again in 2006, with a significant decline in SLG only partially offset by an uptick in OBP. He’d been in steady decline since his age-29 season, and there was no reason to think it wouldn’t continue. I thought he’d break 700, but just barely.

by FredOx on Jul 1, 2009 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

There’s no doubt he was in decline but I refuse to believe that the FO’s assesment was “We will pay this guy 3 million to not hit or field.”

by afh4 on Jul 1, 2009 2:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Are we sure you aren’t talking about Dellucci?

by Roger Dorn on Jul 1, 2009 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions

They were gambling a bit. They expected and hoped for better, but that result was probably no surprise.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

by Jay on Jul 1, 2009 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Difficult to say what they expected. I don’t think that the numbers break with where Trot was trending though.

          OPS SLG OBP AVG
2003 .974 .578 .396 .306
2004 .887 .510 .377 .315
2005 .803 .446 .357 .275
2006 .767 .394 .373 .268
2007 .677 .336 .342 .251

Pretty much across the board downward trends, and with the exception of 2005 to 2006, about a 10% drop in OPS year to year. That .677 is about what you ought to project based on the trend.

But if that’s all the data you have, you don’t sign him for $3 million.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

by Jay on Jul 1, 2009 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Shoot. I thought there might be people impressed with me using actual facts again. I haven’t done that in years.

Yep, it didn’t look good until after the preview and I played with it until it looked nice.

Right, I think they thought some of that decline was influenced by injury…of course, that’s what you get with players of that age.

by TribeJay on Jul 3, 2009 11:17 AM EDT up reply actions

Got rid of him just in time. A little fortuna for the Indians.
