Wonder what effect this could have on the PTBNL.

That article linked above? Am I missing something? I don’t see anything indicating either way in that little piece.
He incurred the injury, if it exists, while playing for St. Louis. He wasn’t damaged goods. It’s probably a sprain. All of that seems to point in that direction.
But last year, for instance, our PTBNL was tied to making the playoffs. This year, I’ve seen speculation of a similar thing, but linked to them re-signing DeRo or to a playoff run even. I’m not sure if it’s allowed to be tied to DeRosa’s actual performance or to an AB threshold but with Shapiro that all seems in play to me.
I hope you’re wrong. But, you may be right.
Remember when we traded for John Smiley (and he promptly broke his arm, ending his career)? We needed that deal back then.
I’m not crying over Damian Jackson.

Well, I thought of Graves at the centerpiece rather than as a PTBNL-level throw-in. Of course, I was 13 and Graves and Jackson were the only guys in the deal I’d ever heard of.
(Pause for research)
Yep, they’re still the only ones I’ve heard of.

I thought I saw a piece either by Hoynes or Castro that the PTBNL is our choice and not tied to St Louis’ or DeRosa’s performance. I’ll dig.
This says its not tied to the Cardinals performance. It also gives support to the idea that the Indians will do the picking from a pre-determined list.
Wow, seems like that is something that would happen to us (going the other way, I mean).
Il faut d'abord durer.
No, no. Players we acquire just become horrible, immediately. No injury necessary. See:
Perez, Chris
Dellucci, David
Wood, Kerry
Nixon, Trot
Given the velocity drop and control problems, I’m not sure Perez isn’t damaged goods.

Velocity drop?
He averaged 95.2 last year with the Cards … and so far this year his average is 94.1.
His Indians debut averaged 94.59 with a max of 95.4

Nixon? Really? I don’t think anyone expected much more the veteran, gritty presence from him. We got that and pie.

You don’t think the Indians expected more than a .677 OPS and the worst defensive outfielder in the league?
I didn’t. His OPS dropped from .975 in 2003 to .804 in 2005, and he had only 167 PAs in 2004. Then it dropped again in 2006, with a significant decline in SLG only partially offset by an uptick in OBP. He’d been in steady decline since his age-29 season, and there was no reason to think it wouldn’t continue. I thought he’d break 700, but just barely.
There’s no doubt he was in decline but I refuse to believe that the FO’s assesment was “We will pay this guy 3 million to not hit or field.”
They were gambling a bit. They expected and hoped for better, but that result was probably no surprise.

Difficult to say what they expected. I don’t think that the numbers break with where Trot was trending though.
OPS SLG OBP AVG
2003 .974 .578 .396 .306
2004 .887 .510 .377 .315
2005 .803 .446 .357 .275
2006 .767 .394 .373 .268
2007 .677 .336 .342 .251
Pretty much across the board downward trends, and with the exception of 2005 to 2006, about a 10% drop in OPS year to year. That .677 is about what you ought to project based on the trend.

But if that’s all the data you have, you don’t sign him for $3 million.
