Fausto
I really enjoy reading your guys comments … its pretty much the highlight of my day after the indians lose … wondering what your thoughts on fausto coming back so quickly and dominating the lower leagues is. i think he should stay in AAA until his arm falls off … but who knows. im not a coach.
Lofgren goes tonight, Stowell got roughed up in about 3 IP, and House pitched 5 scoreless, but only struck out 1.
Oh, and Edell pitches tonight.
Stowell isn’t really a 3 IP guy, right?
Also – Santo Frias!
And what happened to Jonathan Holt this year? Yikes. It’s like Fausto was his pitching coach this spring.
I think they have Stowell on a low pitch count due to some arm issues. He has thrown about that number of innings in most of his outings, if memory serves.
There’s a chance he could end up in the pen, but last I heard they hoped to try him as a starter first. It would be a durability issue if they moved him to relief, probably not a stuff issue.

Um I am reading this article about women sportswriters and I have come to this conclusion: Men are jerks. No offense everyone.

Some do but I was referring to the men who get expensive haircuts.
Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?
What are you asking me? You cannot say that some men do not get haircuts that cost more than my average price for a woman’s haircut.
Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?
Mine are usually around 100-150. That’s actually below average with coloring (which I get). I would think there a lot of men (metro etc.) who get haircuts that cost over 200.

Next, ask her about swimsuits. “It’s LESS FABRIC than a guy’s suit, how can it be MORE EXPENSIVE?”

This ticks me off. I also hate how one piece is around $17 and then you have to buy the other for $17 too. Just put them together for like 25 seriously.

This is actually one of my favorite lines to drop when a conversation with a girl stalls out. “I got a new pair of board shorts last week and I was thinking they’re SO expensive…” And then I just get out of the way.

My hairdresser is almost my age exactly; she’s been doing my hair since high school. She started out at the Dillard’s salon, now she works at some ritzy place. I told her if she upgrades again, we’re through.

That’s why my mom refuses to pay for them now. She has short curly hair that is easy to cut so it costs her like $7. My hair looks awful if I just go to Great Clips so I go to a salon.

Well The Untouchables is held in high regard, so that isn’t a terrible thing to not be as good as it. I wasn’t/am not too excited for Bale in that role
Yeah, Bale is definitely not a reason to see it (hell, I thought his Texas G-men were far more interesting, but you rarely get to hear a lot from them).
That said, whenever Johnny Depp is onscreen, the movie really picks up.

Maybe it’s worth a second chance. I was kind of lead to walk out on it because we realized another movie we wanted to see was starting in like ten minutes.

Well no doubt, but with how big that movie was, it would have alienated a lot of viewers to end it logically. But for most of it I loved it. Speaking of thrillers, though, for some reason I recently watched Finder’s Fee, written and directed by Jeff Probst. I was expecting the most pretentious movie ever. But I actually really enjoyed it. Tiny budget, entire thing takes place in one night, in one location. But I like that. Worth checking out. Has Ryan Reynolds, Matt Lillard and James Earl Jones.

Surprisingly I don’t watch that show. I watch all kinds of Disney shows and stuff. I never liked the Nick live action stuff though.

Well that’s old. I meant now. Like the comparable shows to Sonny with a Chance and Wizards of Waverly place. I don’t like the Drake and Josh and iCarly stuff.
Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?
My daughter loves iCarly. She liked Drake and Josh, too, but not after Josh had his gastric bypass surgery, Fat Josh was funnier. Miranda Cosgrove is actually moderately funny as far as it goes (anyone remember School of Rock?). But my brain has been dulled by raising a 6 year old.
Been meaning to go get my boombox and turn the game on. Haven’t got to that yet.

Seriously, Sowers has two or three halfway-decent starts, I think he gets flipped. People are talking seriously about signing Paul Byrd.
by fleerdon on Jul 1, 2009 7:28 PM EDT reply actions
Really? I would think that if Sowers shows that he’s capable of stretches of decency, he’ll be pretty valuable to the Indians in the future, with as little pitching depth as they have. Though I guess he’ll be out of options.
True, he’s a lot less useful if you have to keep him on the 25-man. But also, if he has a nice stretch here, do you really feel comfortable projecting that into, “Okay, he’s a reasonable AL starter now”? I don’t. In this market, I pull the trigger.
by fleerdon on Jul 1, 2009 7:34 PM EDT up reply actions
Having to keep him on the 25-man is problematic, to be sure. I guess it depends on whether Lee is traded. If not, you have Lee, Westbrook, Carmona (hopefully), Laffey, Huff, with Lewis, Rondon, Jackson (and Reyes?) in AAA. That might be okay. But if Lee goes, and you don’t get 2010 ML ready material in return, I think you stick Sowers in there as your #5 starter — at least for the first part of the season. Maybe you trade him later on in 2010 then when Rondon or whoever is ready to come up.
I think I’m assuming we move a lot of guys and get more arms hangin around. I’m also of a mind that we should get value for Jeremy while we can. 2010 may well be too late.
by fleerdon on Jul 1, 2009 7:51 PM EDT up reply actions
You might be right… I’d need to see what kind of arms end up hanging around before I could decide. Of the guys that have a reasonable chance of being traded, though, I would think only Lee and Martinez would get us SP that could help in 2010. Possibly Jhonny could bring a depth option that could slot above Jackson, but probably not a guy who makes the top 5.
I was trying to think about how valuable Sowers would be if we tried to trade him mid-next year…. I would think the options situation wouldn’t be too big of a factor, since he’d likely be going somewhere where they need him immediately. It’s one fewer year of control, and maybe he’s pitching worse than he is now…but again, with our pitching depth situation being what it is, that tradeoff might be worth it. Besides, there’s always a chance he keeps pitching like this, and becomes more valuable.
Right, and I expect to trade at least one of Lee or Martinez.
by fleerdon on Jul 1, 2009 8:01 PM EDT up reply actions
but even then…. the most recent talk about Martinez anyway involved high ceiling single-A/high-A guys, not near-ML prospects. I’m sure there are trades out there where we could get potential 2010 front-half-of-the-rotation guys, but I haven’t heard especially serious suggestions along those lines… Maybe if we trade Lee to Texas?
The Phillies have been mentioned in passing regarding Lee. I don’t know much about their pitching prospects, but I believe a couple of them are advanced above A+ ball.
Names are Drabek and Carrasco, Carrasco is 22 in AAA with decent peripherals, giving up about a hit an inning as the only red flag.
Drabek’s numbers in 60IP in high A were very good, but since he made the jump to AA he has been “meh” in about 30 IP.
So what do y’all think of women in the sports journalism field?

Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?
I honestly have watched all of three Erin Andrews interviews in my life. I will say I think female interviewers tend to get less defensive responses out of athletes.

If it was a Pakistani woman, would she also be on her mobile phone speaking Punjabi the entire ride?
by fleerdon on Jul 1, 2009 8:00 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, this…. It’s hard to imagine a reasonable person saying that women shouldn’t be sportscasters (or almost anything else)
But in the sports newsrooms. Women apparently are often treated like they don’t know what they’re talking about. It’s getting better but I think it still exists to a certain extent.
For example: “Men do not trust my answers. Even though they have checked and confirmed my facts in the past they still have no confidence in me.”
“You have to be 100% accurate or you will be considered a dumb broad whereas mistakes by men are sloughed off and rarely addressed with gender-based language.”
“Men can come out and be an expert; I have to be nice and smart.”
All quotes from women in the sports journalism field.
Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?
I don’t doubt that women have a hard time of it because of these prejudices. But presumably most of the prejudices are relatively unconscious, or at least would not be openly admitted to.
I kind of doubt a sports journalist of either gender could be cavalier about his or her job security right now.
by fleerdon on Jul 1, 2009 8:10 PM EDT up reply actions
I think the supervisors are generally very supportive of women because they generally write better only because they feel they have to so no one ever said anything about being worried about job security. It’s just the other male writers who say things.

Also, the fauxhawk is poking from beneath his cap.
Is it a fauxhawk? The last time I saw his hair, it was actually shaved on the sides.
I believe in Carl Pavano.
I always thought a fauxhawk was when the strip of hair down the middle was sculpted into a spike without the surrounding hair being shaved.
I believe in Carl Pavano.
That’s certainly a faux but I also think having two levels of hair is pretty faux. A mohawk involves a bald head and a strip of hair, at least in my book.
I had a friend who had a rather large blue mohawk. She worked for Penthouse Magazine in NYC (as a graphic artist) and said that at least once a week some random guy in a business suit would stop her in the building (usually in the elevators) and ask how much her “services” were. Like a foot long blue mohawk in NYC is the secret code for “kinky prostitute” no matter where it appears.

I don’t buy that Sowers would be any good out of the bullpen. The only reason he does ok in short stints is because they’re in innings 1-3 or whatever where guys are settling in.
He’s nothing more than a mop up guy.
Just got back from Oakland, where the A’s efficiently handled Verlander and the Tigers
5-1 in 2 hrs 18 min. Two 2-run homers (by Cust and Giambi). Verlander gave up 6 hits in 6 innings, striking out 6.
Braden went 7 innings and Ziegler and Bailey were impressive in closing out the game.
Indians beware. The A’s record is almost as bad as the Indians, but there are coming to Cleveland on the heels of a series victory over the Tigers, after losing their last 5 inter-league games.
