Anyone know a lot about European trains and or those weird planes that fly around Europe?
I am trying to get from Copenhagen (or Oslo) to somewhere I can fly to Casablanca. I don’t want to screw with airports if I don’t have to.

I certainly don’t but I’m willing to bet if anyone does they’re on LGT. This is the most diverse group of people ever.

Well I mean in general. I don’t think I have ever seen a group of people who know as much diverse information as this one.

This is as good a place as any to put this:
Carrasco has a FB that sits at 92, and occasionally touches 95. Average curve, plus change, weapon against lefties.
Started the futures game for the World team last year. Also rumored to be a possible return in the Sabathia sweepstakes last year.
If we could get a couple of relievers and maybe a promising single-A-ish prospect too — or alternatively just a second, somewhat lesser but still promising, SP prospect — I’d do it.
For Cliff Lee? Are you nuts?

We got a near-major league ready top hitting prospect, a AA hitting prospect, a quasi-major league starter, and a reliever. And that was for three months, not 15.

We’d need like Kershaw plus an everyday player from the Dodgers lineup for me to even consider it.

Lee won’t be on pitch 100 in the 5th inning of an NLCS game.

Haha, true, but for what we would want in addition to Kershaw, I don’t think the difference between he and Lee would be worth the Dodger’s time.
I agree. Which is why I’m against a Lee trade.

I’m also not in the camp that thinks 2010 should be punted because we have a good pitching prospect in Akron.

Yes and no. It can be done in other ways, most of them more long-term, you know, like drafting and signings. If we do fall out of it in 2010, we can deal Lee then. We could get A-ball pitchers for guys like Betancourt and Carroll and Pavano.

by Manhattan Tribe Fan on Jul 1, 2009 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions
I guess I disagree that we can get a prospect like Rondon with an arrival date of 2011 for Betancourt, Carroll, or Pavano. I am receptive to the idea of trading Victor instead of Lee, but that is a limited market, and he is not as valuable.
I interpreted post-2010 world as being broader than 2011. I’m against trading either.

I just don’t see the pitching depth to field a respectable rotation after Westbrook and Lee leave after 2010.
This could be construed as an argument to pull out all the stops for 2010, but I get what you’re saying.
by Logodaedalus on Jul 1, 2009 10:01 PM EDT up reply actions
My focus is being competitive for 2011-2014, given our position player depth, rather than pulling out all the stops for 2010.
Yeah. I agree. I don’t want to give up on 2010 though. I don’t think the two are all that in conflict, actually.
by Logodaedalus on Jul 1, 2009 10:11 PM EDT up reply actions
This works both ways, though. You’re talking about stockpiling pitching depth, but that’s not easy to do. At least part of this plan is depedent on the guys we have turning into major leaguers, and at least one to be near Cliff Lee-level elite.
Well, we have one of those guys. Let’s ride him while we have him.
Though I look right at home, I still feel like an exile
by Manhattan Tribe Fan on Jul 1, 2009 10:01 PM EDT up reply actions
Not exclusively. We take a hit on 2010, certainly, but I’d insist on getting a SP who can be expected to be a rotation mainstay, albeit not at Cliff Lee’s level. If we were giving up on 2010 completely, then I’d probably go for a higher ceiling pitcher at a lower level.
When I called you nuts, I missed that Carrasco was still the centerpiece. I just saw “a couple of relievers and some change too.” I do like Carrasco. Still might not pull the trigger, but it’s not nuts.

Well, I think I’m going to be in Denmark/Norway around August 2-6 and I want to be in Casablanca sometime during 8-12.
Oh, and I want to fly home from Casablanca.
Being in Denmark or being in Norway would be a big difference if you’re not flying. Ferries suck.

I thought riding a train might be better than doing these dumb ez jet layovers. If I like, actually fly, it costs another 800 dollars or something.
Which is better to be in? Norway or Denmark? Denmark, right?
I’ve never travelled Scandinavia, like I said, but if there are ferries involved, you need to leave yourself a lot of buffer time. They can miss by hours.

Aight, Andrew, do we know which airports connect to Casablanca? So far I know about Madrid and Paris.
by fleerdon on Jul 1, 2009 9:45 PM EDT reply actions
Okay, here’s the deal. Really cheap flights come like right before the plane takes off — probably not what you’re looking for — or a little further away than we’re talking here. Like, you could do a Paris-to-Casablanca on the 18th of August for 45 euros, but a week earlier and the price is doubling.
by fleerdon on Jul 1, 2009 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions
That might work, if you knew of a flight that got you from Frankfurt to Casablanca.

Been too long for me to remember. I’m just shopping EasyJet. Best thing I can find to fit your needs is a Paris-to-Casablanca on the 11th for 85 euros.
by fleerdon on Jul 1, 2009 9:54 PM EDT up reply actions
My friend is working the semester at sea boat and is in casablanca from the 8th to the 12th, so that’s sort of non-negotiable.
Supposedly Lufthansa goes from Frankfurt to Casablanca. The 234 dollar train is a private sleeper, too. No transfers.
Thing about trains is, they’re run by the countries, not by any larger authority. You’d be fine in northern Europe, I’d imagine, but if timing is critical to you, I definitely wouldn’t try to get across the continent in a few days by train.
by fleerdon on Jul 1, 2009 9:59 PM EDT up reply actions
EasyJet only seems to fly to Casablanca out of Charles de Gaulle. To get there on the 8th would be E160.
Coincidentally, I’ll turn 25.

I watched most of the Columbus game on milb.tv. Marte was hitting the crap out of the ball, looks pretty locked in and made some good plays at 3B. 4-4 with HR and 2 2B’s for reigning IL player-of-the-week. But we can’t mention him right?
Lofgren was ok, but left too many over the plate and when he did they hit him. Hard. Masa was horrible, had nothing. Frank Herrmann actually looked pretty good, big guy and always around the plate, and seems to have made the best transition to the pen among the recent starters that have been repurposed. Could be in the mix next year for middle relief?
Brown smoked the ball too and is having a successful second season at AAA. I know he’s been kinda written off, but really, whatever function Garko serves on the roster Brown would serve it better. But I think we’ll have to wait until September to see him or Marte in Cleveland.
So, anybody still think Wedge gets fired over the all-star break?
Everytime I see Ben Fransico in the lineup I feel like wedge is mocking us …. and I think Laporta should be up here and with a new manager you have to look at Marte again… its a wasted season we might as well get it correct
Fire Wedge. Trade Peralta. Put Grady on the DL. Trade Shoppach (if possible – with Lee?). Trade Lee. Promote LaPorta, Marte, & Toregas. Trade Francisco (if possible). Promote Brantley. Activate Laffey. Sowers to bullpen. Trade Pavano (if possible). Activate Westbrook.
Finish season with 2nd worst record (although the Pirates seem to want to fight us for it).
Please?
I just wanted to believe.
You can’t just activate people who aren’t ready (i.e. Westbrook).
