Game 89: Tigers 10, Indians 1
Were you shocked at this score? No? Me neither.
Tomo Ohka lasted into the fourth, but then gave up a quick four runs on back-to-back home runs. The scary thing is that he's probably going to make at least another start. Ohka's a symptom of the Indians' starting pitching troubles, because if he's is in your rotation, you have personnel problems.
On the other side of the scoreboard, Justin Verlander shut the Indians out for seven innings before giving way to the bullpen. The Indians got five hits and three walks off him, which was a better effort than their other appearances against him this season, but they still couldn't push a run across when they had the opportunity. Not that it would have mattered.
Next Up: The All-Star Break, and then the second half. Yes, there's more where that came from.

This season totally sucks. It’d at least be more fun if some prospects were brought up and given regular playing time. I know there are service time arguments for keeping them down, but it would at least make the team more fun to watch than they are now.
Actually, there aren’t service time arguments for anyone now in Triple-A who has spent significant time there. The biggest service time issue at the moment is Valbuena.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
Actually, you know who just fell out of 2010 arbitration range in the past week?
Agent M.
He’d end 2009 with two years + 119 days, if called up on Thursday.

See? This was the plan all along.

Jay, are you calculating these on your own … or is there some magic website you visit?

Wedge would have to go 33-40 in the 2nd half just to match his atrocious first year, 2003.
What is the over/under on that?
If they hang on to Lee and Vic, I’m taking the over.

Hoynes on the rotation after the break:
The rotation coming out of the break on Thursday against Seattle at Progressive Field will be Cliff Lee, David Huff, Tomo Ohka and Aaron Laffey. After an off day on July 20, Lee will face Toronto on July 21 and Pavano the next day.
Pavano getting a 10-day break to keep his innings down.
Let me amend me statement then.
I hope Mark Shapiro makes Jess Todd his selection!

Do they have rules regarding that? I’ve always felt the thing was just kind of a really cool gimmick; I don’t have the foggiest how it’s organized.
I believe Baseball America picks the players — 2 from each team max and you have to be a first timer I think. All teams need to be represented, and I guess you understand the Team World vs. Team US part.
Futures game impressions:
Carlos Santana looked very good behind the plate. I loved his composure, and he blocked balls in the dirt very well. The US team stole a couple of bases off him, but 2 of them were impossible to throw out (a pitch in the dirt, and one where the runners was basically at 3rd base before Santana got the ball). He looked really comfortable out there and he definately reminds me of Victor — especially the batting stance. Also … he swings HARD!
Weglarz had a solid game, no hits, but he looked alot more athletic than I thought he would. Those stories about him being 245 pounds of muscle weren’t a lie. He had one opposite field linedrive that was caught which showed some of his power since he barely extended his arms on that swing.
Overall the game was pretty exciting despite the 3 or 4 hour rain delay, and “our guys” didn’t embarrass themselves — if anything, I’m more impressed with them than I was before.
I just watched enough to see Santana’s walk in his last at-bat (then watch Weglarz! get pinch hit for). That stance gets me everytime… if he and Vic do end up sharing the same roster someday, my head might explode.

I saw him try to pick a guy off at second. Hit the runner but not a completely terrible throw.
Proud Fan of the Worst Baseball Team I've Ever Seen
Yeah that was a pretty good throw. They all were really from what I saw.
He nearly picked off Sizemore I believe. Scott Sizemore.

I went to an Aero’s game a couple months ago with a buddy to see Santana and some of the other young guys. Santana is crazy athletic. One of the most impressive things I saw him to do was throw behind a left-handed batter in an attempt to catch a guy leaning at first. To my untrained eye, it was one of the more impressive plays I have ever seen by a catcher.
That stance gets me everytime
I was half-watching a spring training game and absolutely thought it was Vic up there until I remembered he wasn’t playing that day.
Today’s proof that ballplayers are the same as the rest of us—or were at age ten (via Castro):
Santana was hoping to meet up with Victor Martinez tonight, upon the Tribe All-Star’s arrival. Santana, even before he was traded to the Tribe last summer, has long listed Martinez as his favorite Major Leaguer and the player he hopes to emulate. If the fates (or trades or moves to first base) allow, he may be the one to supplant Martinez as the Tribe’s starting catcher, sooner rather than later.
“I would love to play together with my favorite player,” Santana said.
I’m guessing the batting stance isn’t coincidental.
