Game 91: Mariners 6, Indians 2

The Indians weren't going to win this one unless Cliff Lee was pitching, and unfortunately, he can only go every five days. Felix Hernandez, who has for several years now been one of the most talented pitchers in the majors, now seems to have put it all together. Hernandez allowed five hits and a walk in eight innings while striking out 8, and he actually looked better than that line indicates.

Grady Sizemore was responsible in some part for each of the Indians' two runs. In the sixth, he tripled and was driven home by a sacrifice fly. In the eighth he drove home Luis Valbuena from second on a double. Grady's back in the leadoff spot now, and more importantly, he's hitting. If Victor Martinez gets back on track, this could be one of the best offenses on a 100-loss team ever.

David Huff struggled through five innings against a unimpressive lineup, and the guys that relieved him weren't much better. Jose Veras gave up two runs (one earned) in his inning, and Tony Sipp also allowed a run. Chris Perez  was a bright spot, for he went through his inning with ease. A reliever has to pan out eventually for this team, right?

Well…on a positive note Alexander Perez was #6 on BA’s Hot Sheet.

Oh and this bit was interesting:

Between Perez, Hector Rondon, Kelvin de la Cruz and others still on the way, the Indians have built one of the game’s steadiest pipelines of young Latin American pitching.

Ahem…

On an even more positive note, Grady Sizemore seems to be resembling Grady Sizemore lately.

De La is scheduled to start throwing again, btw, avoiding surgery for the time being. With no setbacks (there should be a gong that strikes every time that phrase is read), he should get a couple starts in August.

Also, Danny Salazar has put together an impressive string of starts at LC. He seemed very much overmatched his first few starts, but seems to’ve figured something out and has joined the list of teenage pitchers in the system performing well in full season ball at this point.

And, ummm… Marte hit another homerun. Just stayin positive.

De La is a nickname that I will be abusing heavily if he makes it to the show.

3 feet high and risin’, baby.

Courtesy of De La Soul. Too bad he’s not a batter, he could have some dynamite theme music.

Something like, stringing him up by his toes and feeding him laxatives until he screams “Uncle” (or “LaPorta”, whatever comes first)?

How about “Uncle LaPorta”

Hey, if Uncle LaPorta hits better than Cousin Benny….I’ll call him whatever he wants.

I just wish that Uncle LaPorta would get to come visit us again in Cleveland.

Is it just me or does Grady look 40 years old in that picture?

Grandpa Grady…got a nice ring to it

This season has aged him. It’s aged all of us.
