It really doesn’t deserve a thread, but as heard on WTAM, the Indians just announced that Sowers gets the start on Saturday.

yippee.

It was in the PD this morning too. Ohka to the bullpen. A roster move to be made (Veras?)

Wait, there’s a game?

I thought we were just shut down for trading!

by FallsTribeFan on Jul 23, 2009 12:23 PM EDT reply actions

Maybe we can trade this game to Tampa Bay for a game against Baltimore later in the season.

I’d rather trade this game to Baltimore for a game against Tampa at the Jake.

The ESPN preview has Gimenez catching (Garko at 1B, Francisco in LF, Vic as DH).

by peter m on Jul 23, 2009 12:25 PM EDT reply actions

Per Castro:

INDIANS (37-58): CF Grady Sizemore, SS Asdrubal Cabrera, RF Shin-Soo Choo, DH Victor Martinez, 3B Jhonny Peralta, 1B Ryan Garko, LF Ben Francisco, 2B Jamey Carroll, C Chris Gimenez. LHP David Huff (4-4, 6.60).

BLUE JAYS (47-48): DH Marco Scutaro, 2B Aaron Hill, LF Adam Lind, 1B Kevin Millar, CF Vernon Wells, RF Alex Rios, 3B Jose Bautista, C Rod Barajas, SS John McDonald. LHP Marc Rzepczynski (1-1, 2.50).

There’s a 1970s British heavy metal reference just waiting to burst forth from that Jays starter.

by FredOx on Jul 23, 2009 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Rzepczynski? Shouldn’t it be Lzepczynski?

No, not you. Your helmet!

by PatBordersHelmet on Jul 23, 2009 12:38 PM EDT reply actions

He is left-handed.

by FredOx on Jul 23, 2009 12:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Rzepczynski’s 23, has made 3 major league starts this year - all respectable (6 innings) 0— vs. Baltimore, TB and Boston. He has walked 11 guys in in those three starts, also struck out a bunch.

by peter m on Jul 23, 2009 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions

you know, as many injuries the Tribe have had this year, I think the Blue Jays have had even more on the pitching side. Rzep is the 12th starter they’ve used.

by talonk on Jul 23, 2009 12:54 PM EDT up reply actions

announcers said its their 5th rookie starter too.

Choo…seemingly a lot of K’s lately.

by MooneysRebellion on Jul 23, 2009 12:44 PM EDT reply actions

18 in his last 44 PAs. Of course, when you’re slumping like Choo is, Ks aren’t exactly shocking.

by FredOx on Jul 23, 2009 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Geminez catching….Martinez or (more hopefully) a Shoppach trade on the horizon?

by MooneysRebellion on Jul 23, 2009 12:46 PM EDT reply actions

Hammy says it’s just that Gimenez caught Huff a lot in the minors.

by FredOx on Jul 23, 2009 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Kind of hoping maybe that provides Huff with some stability…although if Lee were to go to the Rays, maybe we throw in Shoppach too since they work so well together.

by MooneysRebellion on Jul 23, 2009 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Don’t want to trade Lee, but including Shoppach in any such deal would not bother me at all. Assuming Vic stays.

I dont think this is crazy idea… in fact it might help if he catches sowers also to see if it has anything to do with sowers sucess doubt it but … might as well give it a whirl

by NCTRIB on Jul 23, 2009 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions

It wouldn’t be a bad idea. Something is bound to help Sowers…maybe Geminez is it.

by MooneysRebellion on Jul 23, 2009 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Are you doing that on purpose? It looks strange.

by dgcambridge on Jul 23, 2009 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe we should just carry five catchers, and every starter can have his own. Sowers can have Garko, since we’re gonna lose that game anyway.

from AC’s blog:

The trip to the Great White North always presents some travel complications, and one Tribe player somehow lost his U.S. passport in the three days since the Indians arrived here. He was in straight panic mode pregame today and is likely to endure extra scrutiny before boarding the team charter to Seattle tonight. Perhaps he should just bring the Indians’ media guide with him and show the customs officials his bio page.

Dan Petry division (middle-rotation right-handed starter)

HIGH COST: Jon Garland, Arizona, $6.25 million — Garland hasn’t been able to duplicate the success he had with the White Sox in 2005 and 2006 — a 36-17 record and one World Series ring — but he’s still a durable starter who generally keeps his team close. July has been his best month this season, and he’s allowed more than three earned runs only once in his past seven starts. An unfavorable buyout ($2.5 million) on next year’s mutual option could hinder his value.

LOW COST: Carl Pavano, Cleveland, $1.5 million — Not much has gone right for the Indians this year, but the bargain signing of Pavano has a chance to bring back another prospect or two. Pavano has pitched into the seventh inning in three of his past four outings.

Morosi here.

If he bunts, we had better pinch hit.

why, so Shoppach can strike out twice later in the game?

by talonk on Jul 23, 2009 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

by Joel D on Jul 23, 2009 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

SSS but he is hitting better than Shoppach

by talonk on Jul 23, 2009 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions

The point is not the difference between Shoppach and Giminez, but the fact that we’re going to take Jamey’s 38.2% chance of not getting out and take it down to 0% just so we can watch Giminez bat. A pinch-hitter would have at least eased the pain a little bit.

by Joel D on Jul 23, 2009 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions

and I agree, but who are you using as the pinch hitter? Shoppach? so you don’t waste two players? Valbuena, who is only slightly better than Giminez? Or Hafner, who may want to save for the later innings. Those are your options.

Yes it is, time for me to turn around and ride this tiny amount of happiness as long as I can today.. or if I’m lucky, into tomorrow.

Love the indignant response.

Well it’s Rafael Betancourt. Yes, Yovani Gallardo would have been better. But for an average reliever, the player’s talent is directly related to how far away from the majors he is.

If Mark Buehrle throws a perfect game I will be pissed.

I neither like nor dislike him. Although I’d rather see LaPorta get his at bats.

Have we discussed shutting Huff down? Letting Sowers mop up halfway through August or something?

Actually he threw almost 150 IP last year. More than I thought. He just crept over 100 this year, I think.

So can someone who saw the game tell me whether he was really out of gas when they pulled him or of he just made mistake on the pitch to Millar?

Only saw it on Gameday.

To me, it just looked like a bad pitch. He wasn’t showing the signs of fatigue that lead up to something like that if a guy’s out of gas. We’ve made Millar look like and all-star this series.

Buehrle two outs away from perfect game

by talonk on Jul 23, 2009 4:09 PM EDT reply actions
