Game 96: Indians 5, Blue Jays 4
David Huff turned in one of his better starts of the season today, going 7.2 innings and giving up 4 earned runs. Ultimately, Huff still looks like Jeremy Sowers in that it's unclear what his long term plan for success is. Huff 'pitches to contact' but he also seems to pitch to 'hard contact.' As our resident Jayson Stark, FredOx, pointed out:
Rare territory: David Huff is only the second Tribe pitcher since 1954 to pitch at least 7 innings and give up 7 or more XBH.
The offense also showed up, or at least Shin-Soo Choo showed up. Choo tripled in the 5th to bring in two runs and then scored on a Victor Martinez groundout with a little heads-up base running. Kerry Wood came in to nail down the 5-4 win and looked fine after drilling Alexis Rios in the head with an 0-2 pitch. When watching Wood it's pretty obvious that there's still a dominant reliever in there; perhaps he's just trying to frighten 2010 opponents with these control issues?
A good win for the Tribe: solid starting pitching out of a youngster, solid relief out of Joe Smith and Kerry Wood and a solid day for the offense. While the trade talk is the big news of the day, it was nice to see the team win its first road series since the first week of June in Chicago.
Tomorrow, the Indians travel to Seattle where Aaron Laffey will face Erik Bedard at 10:10pm.

While Huff did last almost 8 innings and got the win …
He did not have a “quality start” and gave up 5 doubles and two bombs. Not sure if I would qulaify that as a “solid” start, but more of a lucky one.
I thought I communicated that he was playing with fire. It doesn’t take much to be one of Huff’s better starts.
the beginning was fine, I just didn’t agree with the solid definition at the end of the article, that’s all
Meh. All I’m saying is that it was solid in both results and that it’s value from a young guy. Good for his confidence, at least.

It’s dubious, though. He did have a quality start, from the end of the 6th until two outs in the 8th. Then he lost it.
Bottom line, any day a rookie starter puts up zeros in the 6th and 7th innings, that’s a decent start.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
Sadly, today’s game also may have marked the end of the line for Looch.
The Blue Jays designated outfielder David Dellucci for assignment to make room for Joe Inglett, according to MLB.com’s Jordan Bastian. Dellucci, 35, started the year with the Indians, before the Jays signed him. He only managed one hit as a Blue Jay in 25 at bats.

Wonder what Looch will say about the Toronto fans?

Yup.
“It tears you up,” Dellucci said, “when you get ridiculed and you did the best you can.”
and
“I was a little disappointed with the way the fans treated me,” Dellucci said. “I thought it was uncalled for, because I tried my best. I tried to beat a double play and tore my hamstring off the bone. The guys in the clubhouse know I gave my all.”

What treatment? This wasn’t a fans thing. Top to bottom, from Pluto to the people on the street, everyone acknowledged one indisputable fact: Dellucci was absolutely terrible. No one I ever heard accused him of not trying. They accused him of sucking. That’s his own fault because it was true.
Steel Nick
Still think he was unfairly scapegoated, and given a disproportionate share of the blame.
Looking back, we had much bigger problems than Dellucci sucking, but his performance commanded a lot of the critical attention.
what happened?

Dewayne Wise robbed a home run for the second out of the 9th in what would become a perfect game.

If the Rays have a perfect game thrown against them they have to trade for victor out of shame

I can’t believe some of you were rooting for a Mark Buehrle perfect game. Shame on you.

So…. Laporta another HR and Marte 3 hits and HR….. you cannot tell me that Giminez, valgood,or perlata deserve spots on the roster more than these guys
The hate of Jhonny is grossly overrated. He’s had a bad first half no doubt, but you guys talk about him like he should be D’FA.

I love Jhonny. He makes it hard to defend him this year though.

Jhonny Perlata is a fat, lazy bum. He can’t hit, can’t be bothered to try in the field. He’s a clubhouse cancer, a pouter, You can just see from looking at his fat complacent mug that he’s proud that he doesn’t have to try. He’s so fat he can’t even bend over. He’s the worst, and should be DFA’d immediately. Nobody would want him, that’s for sure.
I’ll take this opportunity, not to call you out specifically, but….the sarcasm detection on this site lately has been putrid
I know. I had typed up a long, mostly angry and rambling reply to refute what he had typed when that little alarm in my head went off and I posted what I did say instead. No doubt I deserve to be called out specifically, but I did myself a huge favor by not posting what I had prepped. Now I only like like a little bit of an idiot.
I just get so doggone defensive about Jhonny since he’s making himself such an easy target this year. I was watching the game with my girlfriend the other day when she turned to me and said, “Why do we keep doing this to ourselves?” I didn’t have an answer.
Jhonny’s earning a lot of it. This is a pro-Jhonny site by all reasonable standards.

I wasn’t serious that you should dump her, hope you know. It just seemed like the appropriately comic response.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
Despite my recent tack record on sarcasm, I did have that one detected. I just threw in the Pam thing because you seemed to be on the “Pam’s not all that” side of the Office discussion and I thought maybe I could salvage some dignity with a cheap rec.
Thanks, ClemsonGirl!
Anytime I can help out a fellow Pam supporter I will.

Marte now have 4 hits and 2 HR 3 RBI’s…….
Tommrow morning Wedge will say, " Well I have heard good things, but he seems to be swinging for the fences, we really want him to show more GAP to GAP power not so much over the fence. He still has some work to do."
