Jess Todd named to complete DeRosa trade
Cardinals beat reporter has now confirmed what Tom Hamilton is reporting on-air — the Cardinals are sending reliever Jess Todd to the Indians, to complete the trade for Mark DeRosa from last month. Reliever Chris Perez was the first player received in that deal, and the Indians had the right to select one more player from a short list, previously reported to include Todd and Francisco Samuel.
Todd, 23, has a 2.20 ERA in 41 games with the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds this season, all in relief. He's struck out 59 and walked 13 over 49 IP.

All alone in here?
FWIW, this was absolutely the guy to get.

The DeRosa trade is looking a lot better now. Not that it ever looked bad I’m just glad I got to see the PTBNL before I left

Stevens, Archer and Gaub … for Perez and Todd … this looks like an elaborate heist to me.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
Shh…you’ll alert the other GM’s in the league that we’re still robbing people blind.
On second thought this is the second trade where Stl been aggressive. Not that it’s a bad pick up.

Cards Fan
I am devastated by losing Todd. He was known as the “Destroyer”. I officially hate my GM after this week.
Stat Whore
If the cardinals win it all will you change your mind? Both of these trades seem like win-now trades so if the Cards win now then they worked right?
Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?

I strongly suggest that we keep this nick name

The only other thinking jumping to mind is Uncle Jess(e), and then a step further, Stamos. Because yelling Stamos is pretty fun.

Despite everything else falling apart this season, credit Shapiro for extracting peak value for DeRosa.
Todd is 5’11", 210 pounds. Could be a Wicky clone.

They look similar, until you realize that Todd’s K/BB is more than double Stevens’.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
I guess Todd immediately becomes our best relief prospect, no? (This is Perez’s rookie year.)
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

So, in all seriousness, how far are we from having the best farm in the league? By the looks of it, talking “Top 100” type guys, position wise we’ve got:
LaPorta
Wegz
Santana
Chiz
SP
Rondon
KDLC (health)
RP
Todd
That seems like a lot to me. If we trade one of Vic or Cliff, I’d think we’d have a top 5 system. If we trade both, I think it has to be pretty clearly the best system in the league.
if everyone had 7 top 100 guys, they’d call it the top 210.

Well, we started off the year Top 5 or 6. I think more good than bad has happened. Lofgren, Brown and Marte off the scrap-heap. Rondon is big-time, Gomez will be something, that has to balance KDLC. The Chiz exceeding expectations, and isn’t House making some noise?
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
I’d say we’re on the doorstep of Top 5 anyway if we just do Pavano/Garko/Carroll. But that’s a tough 5 to crack (Texas, Oak, SF, Tampa, Florida).
It’s easier to crack when you’re stealing their prospects

Hello everyone,
I’m glad to see it was Todd, as I think most of us assumed it was. Samuel seemed to be a younger, less established version of Perez (and that’s not to knock Perez; it’s just to say both have had command issues of great stuff, and of the two, Perez has shown more ability to this point to command it, which is why he’s in the Majors and Samuel is at AA).
I thought possibly guys like P.J. Walters or Fernando Salas could have also been on that list (I heard that there was a third name was being considered last week), but I agree that Todd was the #1 choice and I’m glad that the Indians got him.
Regarding the Wickman comparison, I don’t know Todd’s GB ratios, but I’d think that Todd could be able to get a few more strikeouts (or have it be more a part of his arsenal) than Wickman, though as long as Todd can show good command and be effective, I’ll be satisfied with acquiring him.
Just my 2 cents.
The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.
friggin fantastic. exactly what I was hoping for. Shapiro may need to learn new tricks, but this one never gets old.
Maybe Dolan could let LGT run the team for most of the year, and then defer to Shapiro when we want to unload someone for a big haul.

What gets old is the necessity for him to perform this trick. I’d much rather the team was winning.

Hard to complain about this haul. Hopefully, this actually turns into bullpen results next year (dare I dream?)
Right. On paper we improved our bullpen this year.

It would be interesting to see if the Cards have another move up their sleeve. The timing of this PTBN seems peculiar just one week away from the end of the deadline.
Maybe it’s just my own weird way of using the site, but I almost missed this post since it’s pushed down by the recap and is in between game threads. Possibly worth bumping to the top?

So a year ago our top 3 relief prospects were (in the order of your choice), Stevens, Sipp and Meloan. No we have instead, Sipp, Perez, Todd and Abreu. All four of these guys have some (in Todd’s case very limited) major league experience. Ignoring Abreu then, we basically advanced that whole trio from AAA to the majors while upgrading Meloan/Stevens to Perez/Todd. And this doesn’t even consider acquisitions like Graham or the conversion of someone like Putnam to the pen. It also sets up something like a Wood/Smith/Perez/Perez/Lewis/Sipp/Todd/+filler bullpen for next season. I can get behind that. Now about those corner positions and rotation…
I agree with what you’re saying but let’s not fall into the trap of assuming that Chris Perez and Jess Todd are viable major league relievers. Or Raffy P or Jensen for that matter. I like the look of the bullpen as much as you do, but projecting it for actual production is incredibly dicey.
Not that you don’t know that, but that I don’t want to lose sight of it.

I’m really enjoying the part where we just go get good young relievers instead of waiting for our starting prospects to fail out out of their rotations and converting them. For our next trick, corner players who actually hit for and field their positions!
