Garko sent to Giants for High-A pitcher
He was removed from tonight's lineup at the last minute ... and so was Lincecum. (Yes, people, that second part is a joke.)
We're getting lefty Scott Barnes and a PTBNL, per Will Carroll. Barnes is 21 going on 22 in High-A ball, 99 K in 98 IP over 18 starts, 2.85 ERA.
UPDATE: Per Castrovince, there is no PTBNL. [Ryan]
UPDATE: Castro now saying that ANDY MARTE will be promoted tomorrow and assume most of Garko's playing time -- at least at first base. Out in left field, Garko cannot be replaced, only succeeded. Marte is leading the International League in OPS and slugging after walloping 20 extra-base hits in his last 20 games. [Jay]

No PTBNL, from Castro:
UPDATE: Contrary to a report floating around out there, there is no player to be named component in this deal.

he wasn’t very good, but i’m strangely saddened by this. i think i’m just not dealing well with change right now, because you know, pitching! hey!
I feel ya.
Garko was a favorite of my dad and brother. But they realized his ceiling at some point this year.
I liked every guy that helped contribute to the 2007 run. Garko included.

Yeah, he used to be one of “my” guys. I’ll shed a tear for him. But only one.

I’m conflicted on this too. I still see Wedge sitting him.

Wedge should get a memo that says,
“You play him or you’re automatically fired.”
OR
“If you want any chance of managing the Indians in 2010, you play him.”
We need to find out what Marte is all about; we know he can sit on a bench – what we need to find out if he can consistently hit ML pitching like we were expecting him to. He certainly can’t do that from the bench (unless he gets a large tree trunk that extends to the plate from where he is sitting on the bench, that is).
Just my 2 cents.
The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.

really hoping that’s the case… laporta needs mlb ABs
by gorilla_baller on Jul 27, 2009 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions
Andy has to be added to the 40 and evaluated or else he’s gone. I’d say it’s more important that they maximize the time to see if he’s worth keeping around then it is to get LaPorta major league ABs. Marte is a must make a decision guy at the end of ’09. LaPorta is not.
I’ve got this right, don’t I?
i mean, i’m happy about the “significant playing time” portion of the post
not so much the “at first base”

In case anyone is wondering … Marte has appeared in 7 total career games at 1B.
1 last season in the bigs.
6 this year in AAA.
Yes, and to be specific … he played one inning there.

I actually saw him plat first at the Clippers game last Thursday night. He looked pretty good there. He had two home runs that night, also.
by Buckeye Brad on Jul 27, 2009 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions
Definitely. He’s an “old 21,” in that he’ll be 22 in September, but age 21-22 is appropriate to prospects in High-A. As he seems ready for Double-A already, he’s on a really great pace to the majors.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

And he’s also advanced pretty well considering he’s a 2008 draft pick. If you were drafted last year and have advanced to AA or above, you probably were really advanced to begin with.
Also, he’s been on a roll.

Oddly, lefties have a 2.78 GO/AO ratio, while righties have a 0.46 ratio. He must pound the inner half of the plate against the righties.

2 favorite Garko memories.
1) Game winner (or was it a game-tier) off of Jenks in the bottom of the 9th in one mid-summer game in 2007.
2) Long battle with Dice-K in Game 7 I think before doubling high off of the Monster.
It was a game tie-ing homer in the ninth and a game winning single in the 12th. I was there. Awesome.

my favorite memory is from a few years ago when he gave me his autograph after i told him that i too lead my team in HBPs. then i asked him for a letter of rec to stanford. unfortunately, the autograph is worthless now, seeing as it was on a Indians v. As ticket with sabathia’s and perez’s autographs.

Garko’s last month with the Tribe … June 26 to July 26 … 22 starts and one PH appearance … .349/.393./.566 … oddly similar to Marte’s last month in Columbus … yet only 3 walks in 89 PA … raised his season OPS 70 points, from 756 to 826.
He did it proper … and so did Shapiro.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Candiotti at MLB strikes again!
After reading this post it all becomes clear…it appears I have been led astray by the cowardly Cleveland media…
“The bottom line on the Garko trade is this: There was NO NEED to trade him right now. We made the present team weaker by getting rid of an excellent RBI guy. We just DUMPED HIM. WHY? Because Wedge hates Garko and that’s the ONLY reason they got rid of him. The salary etc. is a smokescreen. He’s got a way better bat then most of the players on the roster. Even the most optimistic person would say the pitcher we got won’t help us for 2 to 3 years, and that’s IF he pans out. So it’s not that Garko was the reincarnation of TY Cobb. It’s just that you weakened the Indians by dumping him and it was done out of spite because of a 500 manager and his boneheaded boss. And none of the media will come out and say it and that’s what ticks me off the most.
7/28/2009 1:35:24 AM”
This has to be one of the all-time best cle.com posts.

It is interesting that there’s a cadre of fans that think that Wedge hated Garko, where many (maybe most) here would say Wedge liked him (played him) too much. I can understand the opposing viewpoint, I just think they mis-read Garko’s value. No doubt they would say of Garko — as I have for other players — that given more regular time, he would have been an even better hitter. I can’t say they’re wrong about that, I can just disagree (as others have with me regarding other players) that there was evidence that he merited that extra time.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
Well, I mean, he liked him enough that he kept putting him in left to “keep his bat in the lineup”…. but I don’t think that’s an issue of liking him too much, but rather of misvaluing his offense. Or maybe just giving him lots of playing time so he could be traded, which seemed to work pretty well, actually.
by Logodaedalus on Jul 28, 2009 5:22 PM EDT up reply actions
Actually, there’s probably something to the fact that he tended to start in left pretty much only when pitchers that other teams don’t have to care about were on the mound.
by Logodaedalus on Jul 28, 2009 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions
for us. Am I misremembering? Seems like he mostly played out there behind Huff, Sowers, Ohka…. not as much behind Lee and Pavano, whose trade value the Indians have an interest maximizing.
by Logodaedalus on Jul 28, 2009 6:35 PM EDT up reply actions
Okay yeah, so mostly Huff then. Didn’t realize there were 2 Pavano starts in there.
by Logodaedalus on Jul 28, 2009 6:45 PM EDT up reply actions
I think you can argue that he would have been a better hitter if he played more but not so much better that he’s better than the other options and I think that is the point that most of us make.
Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?
