Around SBN: Interview With UMD Athletic Director, Dr. Debbie Yow

Smoke Signals with Jay Levin, etc.

I just wanted to let everyone know that with Tony Lastoria on "vacation" (which is somewhere around Kinston, I think), our beloved Jay will be my co-host for the Smoke Signals radio show tonight from 9:30 to 10:30.  You can either listen live or catch on with the podcast at a later time here.

Jay and I will hit on the all the highs and all the lows of the last week and should hear from Tony Lastoria, who plans on calling in with his thoughts on the latest moves by the Tribe as well as what he's hearing.  Additionally, a cameo by Anthony Castrovince from indians.com is expected to check in with his thoughts on the moves that have been made and the moves that could happen.

EDIT - this should probably be a FanShot, so if someone who knows how wants to move it there, have at it.

I don’t fully buy into this “writing off next year” thing

by APV on Jul 30, 2009 9:38 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Me either.

by FredOx on Jul 30, 2009 9:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

add me to that. had a long, and rather heated, discussion with one of my bosses today, dropping many expletives and at one point telling him to go root for New York, channeling my inner Phil Savage. I compared this blowup to some other teams, most notably the current state of the Pirates. In the past year and a day, they’ve traded off Jason Bay, and a host of fringy “all-stars” and fair role players.

we still have Grady F’n Sizemore, a partially rejuvenated Pronk, Choooooooooooooooo, Droobs, and some legitmate promising young players in LaPorta and Valbuena. and we’re still in the AL Central.

No, we’re not going to be the favorites next year. I can’t imagine we’ll be 10:1 underdogs either though.

Do you still have a job? I’m legitimately concerned.
Also, I agree with you.

Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?

by ClemsonGirl on Jul 31, 2009 4:40 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yes, i mixed in a few “agree with you”s. it was a healthy venting for the both of us.

You dont think we’re writing off 2010?

I just don’t think anyone in the AL Central is so obviously solid

by APV on Jul 30, 2009 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, I agree.

Again one of the many reason I pushed for a Lee trade.

This is true. It’s just that we just got considerably worse for next year. It could still happen, and we’ll be cheering for it.

by dgcambridge on Aug 2, 2009 10:01 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i think it’s fair to say that we’re writing it off in the sense that we’re not really aspiring to win the division, but i don’t think that means we can’t be competitive either

by Cap'n Snegiryov on Jul 30, 2009 11:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, this is where i am. the central sucks, so if we get lucky we can possibly be interesting in the division, but i think the team goal for ’10 shifts from “win the division” to “stay involved in the division conversation while developing some studs for ’11 and beyond”. or maybe something shorter than that…

by DontCallMeJoey on Jul 31, 2009 2:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with this as well, this division is not going to be dominated by any one team.

This Carmona conversation is putting blades through my heart

by APV on Jul 30, 2009 10:08 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I love Fausto, and I want nothing more than for him to bounce back, so I know this comment may be colored by my hope and optimism. . . but I think Paul is overstating the situation. As Castro seemed to say, the Indians aren’t saying they have NO faith in Fausto’s ability regain 2007 form, they’re just saying that they don’t have the sufficient faith in his ability to bounce back to base their entire trade deadline approach on it.

by supersizeme on Jul 30, 2009 10:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I was wondering about Shapiro’s remarks about Fausto’s velocity. The clip I saw on TV had him saing that Fausto had never thrown 95-96 before 2007 and never did since. He clearly was trying to describe it as an anomaly. That really had me worried (and curious).

by peter m on Jul 30, 2009 10:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I believe that to be factually incorrect. I was at Carmona’s debut (2006) and assuming the Detroit gun was correct, which maybe it wasn’t, he was regularly throwing 94 with not infrequent 95s and 96s.

by APV on Jul 30, 2009 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, I was surprised to hear Shapiro say that, but that’s what he said.

by peter m on Jul 31, 2009 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Carmona never being like Carmona of 2007 again is more depressing to me than Pronk never being like Pronk of 2006.

Steel Nick

by nickjs21 on Jul 31, 2009 3:50 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Disagree

Pronk was one of the best hitters in baseball for an extended period of time while Carmona was a one year fluke. On top of that Pronk’s success was derailed by injury whereas Carmona’s failures are within his control to fix

"sometimes the internet is hard for me." - ClemsonGirl

by world dictator on Jul 31, 2009 5:36 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That’s not entirely clear.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

by Jay on Jul 31, 2009 12:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think you are really downplaying how much Carmona adjusted to compensate for the hip. Pitch F/x shows that after the injury his release point started to drift, which led to a whole host of problems.

by fwembt on Jul 31, 2009 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not me.

There were plenty of examples of “one year wonders” when you think about pitchers So Fausto’s decline isn’t so out of the realm of possibility.

With Travis Hafner there was only Jim Gentile

by new zealand tribe fan on Jul 30, 2009 10:38 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

it’s a good show…pretty much an All-Star lineup of tribe commentary at a moment where commentary is very much welcome

by APV on Jul 30, 2009 10:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thanks Jay, Paul, and Anthony. Sobering stuff. I thought Jay had a great point with… is Westbrook really a guy who could be on the table if he rehabs without incident. A fair question. I don’t see it necessarily (Castro seemed even somewhat taken aback by it), but talk about really going all out for 2011/2012.

Also, the Sabathia vs Lee injury history. I’m willing to say the Tribe got $0.80 on the dollar with this deal perception wise, but with the economy, teams being even more protective of prospects, etc…. would it have ever been better than this deal? It’s an open question. Thanks to the Smoke Signals forum for addressing the points.
