It’s hard for me to think of a more popular Indian to have been traded in my lifetime as an Indian fan (going back to the 70s). Lofton? We got Justice in return. Joe Carter? He was wearing out his welcome. But Victor?!? He’s the heart of the team for me.

Hagadone had TJ surgery and is on his way back. Reportedly hit 98 MPH a couple of months ago (per Gammons), also throws a solid slider and is working on a change. Might be a reliever down the road.

But a trade can be good for the Sox and good for us. We operate in different universes in baseball terms. Their goal is to make their ML team better, our goal is to grow the next crop of affordable young players. by Brad D on Jul 31, 2009 3:01 PM EDT up reply actions

i wouldn’t call it a stroke of genius. the onus to trade was on the indians’ shoulders (salary dump), so any non-idiot would realize they needn’t part with their best prospects to score vic.

by BrianRose on Jul 31, 2009 3:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Victor is a good short-term upgrade for the Sox. He’s less and less viable as an everyday catcher, though, and his value as a full-time first baseman is less than it is as a catcher. Plus, he’s slow and has injury issues. He’ll help them this year and next, assuming he’s healthy. After that… who knows. I love the guy and hate seeing him get traded. But, I don’t see trading for him as “genius.” Getting Santana for Blake was genius.

Ok – 45 minutes left to trade Jhonny, Carrol and Pavano! Make it so!

I just wanted to believe.

This is the only thing that would make me feel better

Kawakami is a columnist not a beat writer.

Indians are now 2nd youngest ML team after Pirates.

And as soon as we finish the trade for that bat boy over in Milwaukee we’ll be the youngest.

Kevin Goldstein:

Nick Hagadone is a HUGE LHP coming back from TJ — very impressive in short stinnt so far, up to 95, sharp slider, could be closer in the end.
And
I still think Masterson could start, just not in Boston.

by FredOx on Jul 31, 2009 3:17 PM EDT reply actions

It seems like we’re leading the league in acquiring guys who “could be closers” – Hagadone, Knapp, Perez…

Jhonny’s gotta be going to the Jays. They need infielders on the left side badly.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

As the visionary pioneer that brought you the classic http://www.instantrimshot.com, I now bring you the perfect website sound generator for this trade:

The iPhone app merges all 4 sounds: rimshot, trombone, crickets, and golf clap. Great to spice up any conversation.

Usually, an incredible waste of pixels.
