Any chance we can stop with the pictures of happy Victor? I’m going to end up crying when he gets traded.

At this point I feel like someone at the beginning of a concert, in the dark, and we’re all clapping in unison trying to will the band to come out.
Steel Nick
Of course it could be Fall Out Boy, or it could be _______ (Awesome band of your choosing since we can’t unanimously agree on anything).

Who are Boston’s other great pitching prospects? If I were them, I would be absolutely livid in a Vic for Buch swap.
Amen to that! a straight up trade is a major loss for Shap.

I remember calling my brother after the Buccholz’s no-no, and he had substituted a certain four letter word in place of “bucc.” It was so bad, it’s good.
that was the four letter word? That’s not very creative.

I understand that this if this happens, it’s the best way for the club to succeed long-term. And it probably doesn’t do ALL that much to our chances next year (though Lee+Martinez does), but it sucks.

It’s hard for me to think of a more popular Indian to have been traded in my lifetime as an Indian fan (going back to the 70s). Lofton? We got Justice in return. Joe Carter? He was wearing out his welcome. But Victor?!? He’s the heart of the team for me.
"Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge..." C. Darwin
That Lofton trade came out of the blue for me. I didn’t have cable or reliable internet service so I didn’t even know it was in the works.
The Congolese really love their 2007 National Champion North Carolina Tar Heels.
Usually, an incredible waste of pixels.
The reason these trades suck is because we have to watch injuries/bad luck/economy actually affect our club. We have to watch us yield to the gravity of being a small market team – whereas we’ve been defiantly competing against and defying the big boys for a few years now.

The Red Sox are on the verge of acquiring catcher Victor Martinez from the Indians, according to a major-league source.
News of the deal first was reported by Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
Rosenthal’s blog.
This pains me to say it, but I’m pretty sure Vic will be great in Boston and they will love him. As I said in a thread yesterday…the bright side of Vic coming to Boston is I get to see him play everyday. The bad side is I will lose my soul doing so.
but Victor’s a pro, and I think he’ll respond accordingly. It’ll be interesting to see how he fits in the clubhouse with Varitek.
yeah, he’ll be upset about this for awhile. i guess wanting to retire an indian isn’t good enough for Shapiro…

To me, Buchholz makes the most sense. Even though he is struggling, he has to be considered better or equal to Huff or Carrasco.
Refresh me on how buccholz is struggling? No snark here. Just looked at his bref page and he’s been somewhat nasty this year in AAA.
you’re not saying much. 3 starts this season with Boston. Would it make you feel better to learn his WHIP in 99 innings with Pawtucket this season is 0.98

yeah, their fans. I can’t tell you often I’ve heard them complain that it was “unfair” that the Yankees could so significantly outspend them. I gently tried to ask them what they thought it felt like to be a fan of one of the 26 or 27 teams that wasn’t the Yanks, Sox, Dodgers, or Angels…

Hagadone had TJ surgery and is on his way back. Reportedly hit 98 MPH a couple of months ago (per Gammons), also throws a solid slider and is working on a change. Might be a reliever down the road.
hey, I’m just going off some Sox sites, and I’m not an expert at all. He does have 3 pitches and commands them pretty well from what I’ve read. Could remain a starter.

But a trade can be good for the Sox and good for us. We operate in different universes in baseball terms. Their goal is to make their ML team better, our goal is to grow the next crop of affordable young players. Both teams get what they want, and then we groom these guys and trade them back to the east coast in six years.

Hey, I know. I like the Lee trade and it was universally praised from the Philly perspective. I’m just getting the emotional overreaction out of the way early, like Hagadone’s TJ.
Victor is a good short-term upgrade for the Sox. He’s less and less viable as an everyday catcher, though, and his value as a full-time first baseman is less than it is as a catcher. Plus, he’s slow and has injury issues. He’ll help them this year and next, assuming he’s healthy. After that… who knows. I love the guy and hate seeing him get traded. But, I don’t see trading for him as “genius.” Getting Santana for Blake was genius.
So you’re happy about this crap?

I’ll recommend the hell out of this. I’m frustrated we couldn’t get Buchholz. As I’ve said elsewhere, I would’ve given the Sox more than just Martinez to get him.
Maybe it’s just a function of the fact that we’re usually the ones dealing guys, so we’re not in a strong position, but imagine us playing hardball with another team, refusing to deal one of our underperforming major leaguers who succeeded in AAA. I can’t see it ever happening.
