Source: Victor Martinez close to being dealt to Red Sox
Ken Rosenthal reports:
The Red Sox are on the verge of acquiring catcher Victor Martinez from the Indians, according to a major-league source. The deal is straight-up between the Red Sox and Indians. No third team is involved.
The Indians' exact return is not known, but the Red Sox did not include either right-hander Clay Buchholz nor right-hander Daniel Bard in the deal, according to a source.

I’m also just suffering from a little reliever fatigue. I suppose I’d be happier if they said they were planning on moving him back to a rotation spot…but then I don’t see great stuff from him.
Well, his career numbers are considerably better as a reliever (2.83 K: BB as opposed to 1.63 as a starter).
This is going to be the new Mastny meme, isn’t it?

I’m going to eyeroll here.
Or, the market isn’t nearly as good for taking on contracts as it used to be.
The point is you have to point to other deals of this level, this season, where teams are getting obviously more than the Indians.
I just don’t see it. I think the market has changed and Shap, unlike Riccardi, is willing to deal with that and make adjustments.
true, but I also don’t see any deals off the top of my head that involved players of this caliber (Lee and Martinez).
That’s probably telling us something. Unfortunately, we couldn’t really stand pat in my estimation.
Also, I think we’ve actually done really well, despite the chicken little vibe.
I agree on the Philly’s trade, and pretty much all the other trades (except the Tampa Bay trade which at best is a wash). But I’d expect at least a Carrasco level starting pitcher that is ready to step in the rotation from Boston in this deal.
I’m not saying the FO has done anything wrong, if anything I’m agreeing that the market has changed how we can manouevre these trades. The market has put us in the weaker position in these deals, no fault of ours.

This might be worth further exploring in a fanshot, but I was comparing the numbers for some of our current minors pitchers to some of the pitchers we had in 2003-2004 last night. There really is no comparison, the numbers for those guys were pretty poor. Can anyone else think of anyone outside of Lee, Rodriguez, Davis, maybe Cruceta?
Frankly, the more I think about it, the more Vic’s is overvauled here because of the emotional attachment.
Usually, an incredible waste of pixels.
I don’t think anyone is overvaluing Vic as an on-field player. As a fan, a player’s value can be greater than the numbers he puts up.

This is all speculation, as I can’t remember ever having seen him pitch, but his numbers as a reliever just look a lot better.
I’d expect his numbers to be better as a reliever, I’m just not sure (and I say that in the truest “I don’t know” sense of it) whether his value is greater as a reliever. And as I said up-thread…at this point I don’t want to pin my enthusiasm to a reliever – any reliever.

Hmmm…they work when I click on them, but anyway, the summaries:
Justin Masterson Scouting Report: Big righty with an ideal pitcher’s build. Dominated the Cape Cod League in 2005. Masterson has a three-fifths arm angle with a slinging-type motion. His arsenal includes a sinker, a slider, and a change-up. Of those pitches, his best is a phenomenal plus-sinker with an excellent heavy drop — he can vary its speed from 84-94 mph, catching many hitters off balance. Also mixes in a very good slider that sits in the low 80s, and an improving 77-81 mph four-seam circle change. Uses his sinker predominantly as his out-pitch, but also can make use of his secondary pitches to get out of jams. Could stand to mix in his changeup a bit more. His mix of pitches results in a high groundball-to-flyball ratio, resulting in a lot of double plays. Very good command of the zone. Prepares well for every game and pitches with confidence on the mound. Good fielder with a quick and deceptive pick-off move. Strong character, Masterson is one of the most likable persons and teammates going. Converted to a starter in 2007 after coming out of the pen for Lowell in 2006, may still project as a reliever at this point depending on how well his change-up progresses. Needs to work on keeping his delivery consistent deep into games – he’s struggled a bit the third time through lineups. Moved to the bullpen in mid-2008. If he stays in the pen, Masterson will need to keep the walks down and improve his ability to pitch out of the stretch. Ultimately, his ceiling is a #3 starter or a dominant set-up man.
Nick Hagadone Scouting Report: Big lefty whose fastball sits around 92-94 mph and tops out at 98 mph with very good life. Aggressive, throws strikes and gets ahead in the count. Also mixes in a biting 82-83 mph plus slider, and an improving 80-81 mph changeup. Very good control. Team leader and a hard worker. A closer in college, Hagadone could make it as a starter if his changeup keeps improving. Not a lot of miles on his arm. Needs to work on keeping his delivery consistent. At this stage, despite having fluid arm action, his delivery is a bit compact. The team is still undecided as to whether Hagadone will be a starter or a reliever long-term. Hagadone had TJ Surgery in early June 2008, and returned to the mound in Greenville almost exactly one year later.
Brian Price Scouting Report: Arm without a lot of mileage. Projectable frame. Price languished for two years at the back of the Rice bullpen, but impressed in 2008, rocketing his draft stock up the charts. Smooth 3/4 delivery, but a lot of seemingly unnecessary movement and long arm action. Not a lot of deception. His fastball sits between 92-95 mph with a nice tail running in on righties. If used in relief, Price’s fastball can reach the high 90s for an inning burst. Two-seamer sits around 89-92 mph, also has nice inward movement against right handed batters. Also mixes in a plus 83-87 mph slider, which he relies on as his out pitch. Changeup has fluctuated from 79 to 85 mph, as it’s still a work in progress – he shows it a bit too much. However, it does have nice separation from his fastball. His command can be erratic at times when he gets rattled, but for the most part Price has great command and control.

Plus we have quite a few young infielders at the ML level — Valbuena, Cabrera, Marte, even Peralta. Not a lot of power on this team, however, unless Marte or Peralta begin to come through.
Sizemore, Choo, Shoppach have power. LaPorta…
by Logodaedalus on Jul 31, 2009 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions
LaPorta’s the key. Choo is more of a gap hitter, IMO. I guess I meant that there’s no one in the line up who’s really scary. LaPorta might become that guy (or perhaps Weglarz, given time).
Choo has doubles power, and hits some HRs…
It’s not as if we’re becoming the Twins.
by Logodaedalus on Jul 31, 2009 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions
I think Choo is great, don’t get me wrong. I was trying to point out that one thing we DIDN’T acquire in all of this was a real power hitter, a guy who can hit 30+ home runs. Hafner WAS that guy; LaPorta might become him. I don’t think Choo has that kind of power. I’m still happy we’re getting pitchers; I hope they got the right ones.
I even forgot about Hafner somehow. It’s looking like Hafner may be back to being pretty scary, though he won’t hit 30+ for playing time reasons, you’d assume.
by Logodaedalus on Jul 31, 2009 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions
He’s hitting a HR every 15.6 AB this year, compared to 14.7 in 05, 10.8 in 06, 22.7 in 07, and 39.6 last year. And yeah, his OPS is down a bit from 05-06, but it’s still better (.915) than it was in 07 or 08.
(1) Is Hafner’s 2009 OPS within Chuck’s predicted range?
(2) Hamilton was talking the other night about someone on the team predicting Hafner is going to have an awesome 2010 once he can condition over the offseason.
If he can play every day, he could definitely be a major force.

Lachore to Braves with 1 million for Kotchman. A total wash?
Usually, an incredible waste of pixels.
Price has been struggling since moving up to A+. Does he move over to Kinston or slide back to Lake County?
that would make very little sense… i dont know how hairston became valuable in any way.

I’m definitely in the denial stage it hasn’t hit yet.
Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?
I want to just watch tonight’s game- just a nice little distraction. Cheer for my team to win against a team I don’t like very much.
I’ll probably watch it on mute though, because god knows all they’ll be talking about is trades.
Friend on facebook bemoaning the trades saying we should “Pony up the money and keep these guys and build the future around them”

It’s like Cliff Lee’s comment on the PD website, something like “Trading two Cy Young winners in a row? If that’s what Shapiro thinks makes the team better…”
Hell, Cliff. Were you planning on signing a cheap extension? You and CC both? Thanks for eating shit in 2007 when the Indians needed you most.
And probably a little shinier

You know, I’ve been thinking about this. If they had won the WS in 2007, and 2008/2009 played out just as it has performance-wise, I think the events of this past week still happen.

Even more so, probably. You have the WS ring, so you can even more afford to build for long term success instead of trying to go all out for 2010.

I wonder if we will move Pavano via a Waiver trade. Moving him would be pretty much entirely a salary dump. Not too many teams would be willing to claim him to block the trade either. Same thing could go for Carrol.
Carrol is a Utility IF. I think Shapiro would rather have the $1M he’d save on the rest of Carrol’s salary than get the benefits of Carrol over whoever.
Anyone know what happens with the incentives if he’s traded? Do they get pro-rated between the Indians and the new team?
Sorry if this has already been discussed, but I don’t remember what the answer is.

sigh. There goes the teams soul.
D-Bowe, Mark Bradley, Bobby Engram and Turtle. Four Chiefs WRers. 4 Pro Bowlers.
I don’t think this is an overstatement at all. We lost the identity of the team today. Today ended an era in Indians baseball.
Absolutely agreed

Of course, but there’ll be another center. You may not be able to replace Vic, but someone can succeed him.
Sure. But Victor is a rare breed. I can’t really imagine even a candidate for successor of that roll, can you? Asdrubal? Grady?
I though the same thing in the 90s, too, when Victor was a kid in Ciudad Bolivar. And that’s not a knock on Vic. This was his era, now it’s over. I dread telling my 10 year old, who just bought a Victor jersey, that his second favorite Indian was just traded. But it’s not as if there is no future, just because we’re having a hard time imagining it.
I am a Chiefs fan as well and this had been a terrible summer for me.
I have to look at Tony Gonzalez in an Atlanta Falcons jersey and now Victor in a RED SOX jersey. THE RED SOX!
And CC is in pin stripes. It is enough to make you vomit.
I can’t take it.

Used to what? Losing? Heart break or both?
The Chiefs were in the playoffs 2 seasons ago and are on their way back with strong leadership. It isn’t them I am worried about.

Oh, and to share a horrible scare I had earlier today. There was a headline that said “Twins acquire shortstop Cabrera.”
My heart nearly stopped.
It was Orlando.
I nearly had to lie down. :D
I had a dream a little while back that we traded “Cabrera or Valbuena” and we had to wait until the next game to figure out which we still had.

I know Sharpo is not going to come out and say it, but with the way things are going with today economics, this maybe the only way Dolan’s can keep the team and hope to build something when things turn around. Things are tuff and sometime hard decisions have to be made to survive. I do not think we got fair value but 60 cent on the dollar is about what you can expect in today’s market and this is not just baseball

I’ll miss Victor. At the same time, I’m very glad he had the first half of the year he had for us. Based on last year, who thought he’d hit that well? Who knows if he will hit well again in the second half (very early results = probably not), let alone next year. And although he may be the team’s soul, he’s also 30 and also a catcher). Maybe he’ll do us all a solid by knocking the Yankees out of the playoffs with a walk-off hit.
Personally, I say we salute the lad for giving us 3 great months, and, as a result, 3 good to very-good baseball players as a thankful farewell. Thanks, Victor – good game.
