Hard to argue against Shap and Wedge being saddled with those “awards.”

I have a hard time viewing Jhonny on the block as anything but Shapiro reacting to Wedge’s apparent dislike of the guy.
Maybe he doesn’t try hard all the time, but it sure doesn’t seem that way to me. Trading him now would be selling at an epic low point.

Perhaps, but some of that lost value isn’t ever coming back. He might be a better hitter again, but the presumption that he can be an average shortstop is gone, and he’ll never be young or cheap or under control for 4-5 years again. If he’s traded, it may be selling low, but it’s also recognizing that Peralta’s “core-player-ness” is probably closer to Garko’s than it is to Sizemore’s. They may consider extending Victor beyond his salad days, as they did with Jake and Travis, but they won’t consider that for Jhonny. He’s simply not a long-term piece.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

I feel like this author is specifically trying to make me mad with the way supports his first half award picks. Even aside from his terrible use of statistics, why are Joe Mauer and Jason Bay’s respective values tied in any way to Mark Prior and Manny Ramirez? Would their output somehow look worse if Prior and Ramirez were played the first three months of the season at a high level?
Apologize for the rant. Glad to see a Ben Zobrist shoutout though. Well done sir.

The most interesting read, to me, was the comment about Shapiro not wanting to seem to give up on 2010. Is it that obvious to people outside the Indians’ organization that Shapiro really has given up on 2010?

I really don’t think any team should give up the next season unless you have a barren farm system

But Heyman seems to imply that it’s common knowledge that Shapiro has given up on 2010, except to Cleveland fans and the supposedly uninformed. Why else say that Shapiro only wants to seem to have not given up on 2010?

I didn’t get that impression. I think Heyman’s point was that Shapiro doesn’t want fans to think they’re giving up on 2010 so he would need an overwhelming package(IE high quality players that are near ready to contribute) in order to trade Lee or Victor

Also my impression. It’s about the PR.

Well in any case, I don’t care about anyone other than the innings, and it would be really stupid to give up on next year

The article does have its charms.
The award for Worst AL Executive is called Hawk Harrelson Award. (How many things can one guy be the worst at?) The NL version is called the Ed Wade Award, and yet Wade somehow isn’t winning it this year.
Milton Bradley is named NL Least Valuable Player.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Yeah, I appreciated those things about it too.

Things Hawk Harrelson is worst at:
(1) Broadcasting.
(2) General managing.
(3) Sexual performance.
(4) ?

See, 1 and 2 are readily observable. 3 requires either personal experience or first-hand reports from someone with personal experience. Which is it?

I believe Hawk’s booth partner made a reference to it once.

Maybe that’s why they sit on opposite ends of the booth.

Isn’t the most interesting point here that the Indians are “dangling” (whatever the hell that means) Kerry Wood? If he’s traded, isn’t that a pretty sure sign that the Indians don’t intend to contend next year? Who else would be the closer?

perez, obviously. no, not that perez, the other one.

Eduardo Perez retired. Maybe Asdrubal can close?

No it probably means Shapiro is more than willing to dump a potentially bad $10-$20 mil contract, especially in a market starved for relief pitching

Consider how many tickets you don’t have to sell in 2010 if you unburden the organization of $10M?
