Thanks for the clarification. Replied to you in the other thread… if they’re really asses about it, could they call him up like the 2nd week of Sept and then he doesn’t make the 86 day minimum threshold for being with the parent club in 2009?
by cheech99 on Jul 8, 2009 12:07 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
But they won’t. For the small difference in cash in this case, they’ll call him up if they think he’s their best option for a bullpen spot at some point.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

I have his ERA being a half a run higher than Castro reports, but I did it by hand and mighta missed something. Strictly in ‘09 terms he’s been relatively successful since his recall. Perez had couple of stinkers, but the Milwaukee outing was arguably his the only abject disaster since May 29, and he was tasked with facing Prince (granted, he totally hung that slider). His BB rate has to soon come down—no question—but at least he’s getting the Ks back (10/9ip since the recall, by my count). He made frequent appearances in June and even survived a couple high leverage events, a scarcity these days.
Guess they wanted to get a look at some of the other guys. Keep up with the improvement, Raffy.

Yeah, AC left out his final 1 IP, 1 HR outing on July 5. 4.30 ERA, 40% inherited runners scored since his recall.

and he says Sowers is not likely to get another start with the Indians.

there has got to be a way to try getting him into the bullpen. I know he doesn’t warm up fast or whatever, but the first couple times through he’s really pretty good. Why can’t we be like ,“Jeremy, tonight tomo ohka is pitching, and we would like you to start warming up in the third to be ready for the sixth.” or something. seems a shame to waste the three good innings he gives us.
by gmfrodo on Jul 8, 2009 9:52 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree. I think the characterization has been overblown — mostly in jest — and remembering that it was made only in camparison to Laffey, not more generally about Sowers himself. We need to see if Sowers can be a decent reliever, because we’ve run out of chances to give him in the rotation and in the minors.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

I continue to harbor doubts about Sowers’s athletic ability.

Yes, it’s been way overblown on this site. If Sowers goes to the bullpen, I think you’ll see him come in to start innings, and not during an inning.
by TribeJay on Jul 8, 2009 7:00 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think though if our bullpen started more innings (although that would take some “managing of the game” by our manager) they might be a lot better than they are.

I’ve noticed for years that Wedge is consistently slow in getting guys up in the bullpen to warm up. It seems that he always brings a reliever in a batter too late and the reliever hasn’t warmed up adequately.
by brookjacoby on Jul 8, 2009 7:32 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’m not sure Wedge has this problem, but I know Hargrove had the opposite problem.
It’s easy for a manager to look like he yanked a guy too early, but Wedge also gets yelled at for pulling Cliff after eight innings and 100+ pitches to bring in his closer in a save situation. Hindsight.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
by Jay on Jul 8, 2009 8:26 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think Wedge is cautious with getting pitchers up. He tries to wring as many pitches as he can from his starters—good policy—and he doesn’t want to have somebody up and throwing for three innings in the pen.

and well…our relievers kinda suck.

It’s interesting … while Raffy has been far from great … isn’t there an argument for leaving him in the bigs (even as a long man) … to try to work through the issues?
I mean, the season is lost, do we really need Mike Gosling trotting in from the pen at this stage of the game?
That’s why, no matter how much Perez struggles, I’d still rather see him out there than the host of others that have trotted through the ’pen so far.
by FallsTribeFan on Jul 8, 2009 7:49 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
One argument is that in the minors, if his slider isn’t working, he can just throw all sliders until he gets it right, like Laffey did with his fastball the other day. Of course, the result of the game at the big league level doesn’t matter any more, either.
by FredOx on Jul 8, 2009 9:12 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, I certainly “get it” on that level … just send him back down to find the pitch … and bring him back when he has …
But, there also comes a point in time where he has to do it again on the big stage.
It’s truly amazing to look at that bullpen and not figure there’s some sort of gas leak that’s affecting these guys.

“gas leak” … there’s a funny idea in there somewhere …

Perez hasn’t been super bad since his return…but I think he needs the rest of the season to get a little fire back and drive to be with a big league ball club again. In the mean time the FO needs to find a topnotch bullpen coach and pitching coach for next year because our boys ain’t cutting it.
and sadly I think a lot of it has to do with mechanics! Which is a pitching coaches job to fix.

Hasn’t the pitching coach mentored the past two AL Cy Young Award winners?

I wonder how much should be attributed to the pitching coach. At some point, you have to question a guy who has overseen some truly awful bullpens in a short number of years

at least if they’d kept isaac, they’d have had the “odd numbered year” thing working for them…

Ding for improper punctuation. Here’s how this should be formatted and punctuated:
garko hits many RsBI.

The “read this” meme always gets its own line and uses no punctuation. It is intended not as a shouted message but as a highly visible “billboard” on the page.

I thought about editing an MLA handbook to include “LGT” on the cover, but since I don’t have Photoshop forget that.

Actually, Jay, I think it is so overused by now that neither Shapiro nor Wedge no longer even bother reading items flagged to their attention.

So we should be wary of crediting the man overseeing the pitching staff for the good results, but he definitely should receive the blame for bad results.

I’ll agree that not all of it has to do with the coaches…but I’ve played with coaches that made me better (letting me know and doing a good job of pointing out the things I needed to do better and helping me correct them) and I’ve played with coaches that never seemed to help anyone. Good coaches can make their players better…bad coaches can make them worse. That’s all I’m saying.

If he keeps pitching this way it won’t matter that he is up for arbitration.

Would it be possible that the Indians win some money back from him?
by hans on Jul 10, 2009 12:21 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I assume you’re kidding, but the Indians are not permitted to offer any number that is less than (a) the minimum salary, or (b) 80% of the player’s average annual salary under his last contract, which in this case is just a one year deal. That rules out offering a negative number, i.e., a refund.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
