Looks like Ohka picked a good time to pitch four scoreless innings.

Do we start stretching Masterson out now? I’d like to see him starting by September if not sooner.

The report in the PD is that he’d be moved to the rotation before the season ends.

Thanks, I was wondering about it after the initial story said he was called up for the BP.

DFA Abreu? I was one of those that didn’t care that we traded Meloan, but this still seems bizarre
by Roger Dorn on Aug 1, 2009 1:40 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Both worthless, apparently. We traded fail for fail. OTOH, I think there’s a good chance Abreu clears waivers and maybe we package him with other players and move him, still.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen the FO so drastically change their sentiments on a player so quickly. Weird.
by malemodel on Aug 1, 2009 3:03 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not so weird. It’s a minor move. It’s not that uncommon for a player to be less important than a roster spot.

Oh… how does trading Meloan benefit the 40-man if we’re just replacing him with Abreu? Casting off a 20-something pitcher with upside, especially so soon after acquiring him, seems very un-Shapiro. (sorry, I realize I’m late to the discussion on this)
by malemodel on Aug 2, 2009 11:10 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The answer is, they realize that they’re going to jettison Meloan sooner or later anyway, if only to protect some other prospect prior to the Rule 5 draft. So there’s no harm in dumping him for someone to offer a little short-term relief to the big-league club, even if they are out of the race.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

That makes sense, thanks. Despite the roster considerations and his poor performance with us, it still surprises me to see the FO give up on him so quickly. Makes me wonder if there wasn’t something else going on that we don’t know about (e.g. character issues), but who knows, maybe he just wasn’t very good.
by malemodel on Aug 3, 2009 10:38 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That is possible, but again, he was a reclamation project. I am as guilty as anyone of over-optimizing his status as a prospect. Just about all of us bought into the idea that his 2008 season just didn’t count, but obviously, it did, and it does. The Indians thought they saw a guy whom they could turn around quickly. Once they realized they couldn’t … aging relief prospect … meh, fungible. It really is that simple.

At Columbus he was: 19 2/3 IP, 14 H, 0 HR, 0 ER, 7 BB, 28 K. That’s a MLE of 14 H, 0 HR, 9 BB, 23 K.
But if I run it through the 2009Unofficial, Unscientific Columbus-Cleveland Translator (note: does not affect Laffey) it looks like, oh, let’s say 25 H, 5 HR, 13 ER, 16 BB, 18 K.

So, still were sticking with just 12 position players, 2 that only play catcher and one that only can DH? This strikes me as silly.

maybe some more moves are on there way, trading deadline does not stop us from making more trades just harder.

I can’t see many more trades occurring, unless they involve Carroll or Pavano (and those wouldn’t bring much return and wouldn’t really save a lot of money). And neither move would create a space for LaPorta.
The exception might be Shoppach, who has value and who could, conceivably be traded, I think. That would actually make room for LaPorta, if they decided to go with Gimenez/Torregas at catcher. But, they might call up a third catcher anyway. Plus, they would still need a starting catcher for next year (I doubt they’d go with Santana). Trading Shoppach would leave them with rookies and a guy like Gimenez, who isn’t really a full-time catcher. They may decide to hang on to Kelly for a while, who knows.
My bet is LaPorta’s a September call up.
