Game 115: Twins 11, Indians 0
Of the twelve hits the Indians gave up tonight, only one (a Jason Kubel home run) was an extra-base hit, not usually a great formula with which to score double-digit runs. But seven walks helped to grease the works of the Twins offense.
Justin Masterson, who's always had problems with left-handed hitters, struggled against a mostly left-handed Twins lineup. In 3.1 innings of work, he gave up 11 baserunners, including 5 walks. If Masterson's going to be a starter, he's going to have to either change his approach against left-handers or develop a pitch that will at least slow them down. Meanwhile, Scott Baker shut down an Indians offense that's gone cold over the past week. Baker shut out the Indians on two hits and 94 pitches.
After starting August playing very good baseball, the talent level is catching up to the Indians. Not unlike Wile E. Coyote realizing too late the effects of gravity, the Indians seem to have remembered that they aren't a very good club and played accordingly.

On a positive note….best game thread ever

It was pretty epic. Especially how it lasted hours after the game was over.
Another positive: I made the right choice. A Little Princess is a fantastic movie. I needed a good cry.
Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?
The minute you decided not to watch Batman and Robin, you made the right choice.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
What?! Who would actually need to weigh their options when one of the choices is Batman and Robin? Do I actually have to read that thread?

Mel, as part of pretending to be a 20-year-old girl, is pretending that Chris O’Donnell is so dreamy as to make it worthwhile.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
Then she should have picked someone who was relevant after 1997 if she wanted us to believe she was 20.

Just because it was made in 1997 doesn’t mean I haven’t seen it.

Any time the team is compared to Wile E. Coyote is a bad time.
What is it with friggin’ Scott Baker? I’m not sure if the stats back me up, but it seems like we’ve never come close to touching him up.
Everybody should get ice cream every day.
This is my impression as well. I wonder what those stats look like over just his last 6 or 7 starts against us.

Thanks. I thought he’d been particularly dominant lately.

doesn’t help that he’s similar to Blackburn and Slowey and those two have had success against us too.
This is Victor's home. Victor Jose, you too.
meaning: Our memories probably lump a couple of their starts in with his.

This is a very good point.

So after last night Kerry Wood has finished 37 of 115 games the Indians have played, or 37 of the 44 he has pitched in. With 47 games left, we are still treading pretty close to the 55 games finished (on pace for ~52). There obviously is no incentive in having that option vest. Hopefully with the team’s crappy play and September call-ups, we can keep that number right around 48-50, so it doesn’t look like we are intentionally screwing him.
Not sure how, but it’d be nice moving forward to see if there’s a way to maximize Masterson’s starts against the Rios/Quentin/Ramirez/Konerko White Sox and minimize them against the Mauer/Morneau/Kubel Twinkies. Doesn’t seem like the Tigers are as right handed as they once were
It would be better to figure out a way Masterson can get lefties out so as to make such a strategy unnecessary.

I missed most of the game. How does a team score 11 runs on bunts?!?!

Can’t forget the seeing-eye grounders and bloop hits. And there was that bunt down the third base line that hugged the line before coming to a dead stop right on the line.

So this is crazy, but it’s Wedge we’re talking about…
What if Giminez is still around because Wedge always feels he needs an “emergency” third catcher and he told Shap this following Garko’s exit?
This is Victor's home. Victor Jose, you too.
I don’t think it’s crazy at all. Meaning it’s not crazy for you to presume Wedge thinks that way. It’s pretty stupid, though. Say Shoppach and Toregas both get hurt. What’s the worst case scenario? We lose a game and call up one of our many catchers for the next game.
Who’s the emergency third catcher then? Jamey?
The Wedge3000 would explode if Shoppach and Toregas were injured in the same game.
Who gives a frak? It’s a meaningless game. He’ll, Mike Greenwell caught an inning once in a similar situation. Stick Choo in there; he’d know what pitches to call.

Saturday, Indians-Twins are the #3 Fox game so most of the country will not have the opportunity to watch this crucial AL matchup wil playoff implications.
Phillies – Braves or Giants – Mets, anyone?
Today’s lineup, if it doesn’t change before game time, is awesome.
Carroll in RF, batting 2nd.
Toregas at C, batting 8th.
Gimenez at 1B, batting 9th.
Shoppach and Marte riding the bench (no doubt just being held out for high leverage situations).
I’m with you. I wish I could still muster the pathos to be insulted by this as a baseball fan, but it’s just not there. In the same masochistic vein that keeps me cheering for the Tribe, I almost hope for a more absurd lineup from Wedge every game out. I’d like to see Wood vest his option by playing the entire game in CF for Huff’s last start.
Everybody should get ice cream every day.
Carroll played 10 innings in RF for COL in 2007.
Sigh, 2007.
This is Victor's home. Victor Jose, you too.
that’s just showing Huff how much confidence the coaches have in his ability to keep the ball out of play
