I thought this was a nice story about Matt LaPorta. It's nice to see that we have players like this in our organization.

Not only did Matt make his year by showing up, he also brought tons of goodies including a signed Louisville Slugger bat and baseball. In return, LaPorta’s new lifelong fan gave Matt a wooden cross necklace which he immediately put on and promised to never take off.

Smart.

He’s set in the event of a vampire attack now.

by Logodaedalus on Aug 15, 2009 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions

For some reason I immediately associated vampire attacks with the Twins. I am strangely certain that this reaction is appropriate.

by danvail on Aug 17, 2009 9:51 AM EDT up reply actions

The Twins are more like small insects. With malaria.

by FredOx on Aug 17, 2009 10:15 AM EDT up reply actions

he said the toughest pitcher he ever faced was the first day he was called up and it was Justin Verlander. I asked him who his favorite Indian was and he said he enjoyed watching Grady Sizemore play

This is Victor's home. Victor Jose, you too.

it would be awesome if anthony could be visited by someone who’s actually on a major league roster.

Incidentally, I don’t find that this story gives me any new perspective.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

by Jay on Aug 16, 2009 2:49 PM EDT reply actions

If you already knew that seeing a very sick person puts your every day travails into perspective, then it wouldn’t be a new perspective.

;)

by Ryan on Aug 16, 2009 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t mean to be a dick about this, because it sounds like the guy is facing a very tough recovery, they basically are restructuring some defects in his legs and feet, after which he’ll have to re-learn how to walk. Really difficult stuff, no doubt. On the other hand, he was never dying or even actually sick, he just couldn’t walk right. The better point probably is that I just don’t think I was having a hard time putting things in perspective anyway.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

by Jay on Aug 16, 2009 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe you should change the title.

by OscarDog on Aug 16, 2009 6:15 PM EDT reply actions

Nah, it’s just a matter of opinion.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

by Jay on Aug 16, 2009 10:46 PM EDT up reply actions

You of course are free to change it. I’m not telling you to change it, I mention this only because most folks seem unaware that they can edit and even delete their own FanPosts and FanShots.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

A brief BP interview with LaPorta is here. (subscription content)

Not very insightful or substantive, but it’s something.

by cleveland teamer on Aug 17, 2009 10:55 AM EDT reply actions

Not subscription content. And thank goodness for that, with questions like “Why do you think there are so many different religions in the world?”

by FredOx on Aug 17, 2009 11:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Why would you ask a baseball player that?

Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?

by ClemsonGirl on Aug 17, 2009 11:03 AM EDT up reply actions

Not just any baseball player — Gator4God.

by Logodaedalus on Aug 17, 2009 12:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Still a stupid question that I wouldn’t ask if the interviewee were the Bishop of Rome.

by FredOx on Aug 17, 2009 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions

This one is even stranger:

Because of the inevitable disagreements, it has been said that religion ultimately causes wars. What are your thoughts on that?

by Logodaedalus on Aug 17, 2009 12:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Probably because LaPorta really puts his faith out there, front and center. God is part of his Twitter address, that isn’t usual.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

by Jay on Aug 17, 2009 12:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah but it’s not a good question to ask anyone except theology professors or religios officials. It’s a tough question to answer and it doesn’t have much to do with what he actually does. He did a good job with it but it’s a silly question.

Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?

or sociologists, psychologists, anthropologists, possibly even biologists, depending on your point of view…

It’s kind of snarky…

You know what? I’ll ask David myself — you may not be aware, he was a contributor to the Indians Annual. I have a hunch that this was edited down from a larger conversation, that he was following up on something LaPorta had said.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

by Jay on Aug 17, 2009 1:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Well if that’s the case then that makes more sense.

Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?

by ClemsonGirl on Aug 17, 2009 1:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Hell, we ask celebrities who we should vote for.

I don’t. Most of them are nuts.

Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?

by ClemsonGirl on Aug 17, 2009 11:50 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s ridiculous.

Steel Nick

He scares me.

Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?

He gave a pretty good answer, actually. Y’know, for the format.

by Logodaedalus on Aug 17, 2009 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought he did a good job of answering it, though. As well as the follow-up questions.
