Game 105: Indians 11, Tigers 1
While the Indians offense took apart Armando Galarraga, Carl Pavano worked his magic on Detroit's lineup. Pavano, who's pitching not only for his next contract, but for perhaps other teams, went eight strong innings, throwing exactly 100 pitches.
For the Indians, Asdrubal Cabrera and Grady Sizemore had the biggest days at the plate. Cabrera hit a two-run homer in the sixth, and collected two more hits and a walk. Grady also hit a two-run homer. Jhonny Peralta and Luis Valbuena both had two hits, Agent M got on base twice, with one coming on a two-run double.

This is in the game thread somewhere, but Pavano picked a good time to pitch well. His next start will cost about $275K…I would not be surprised for him to not make that start with Cleveland.
Where’s the extra $75,000 coming from?
I know the next start should feature $100K incentives for the 22nd starts and getting over 130 IP … is the rest just the pro-rated amount of his base contract?

Exactly…it’s approximate the pro-rated portion of his $1.5M base…and actually in the next start it’ll be more like $70K

So far: 21 starts, 125.2 IP = 200K in incentives.
Assuming 5 IP per start …
Aug 8 — 22, 130 IP — 200K
Aug 14 — 23, 135 IP
Aug 20 — 24, 140 IP — 300K
Aug 25 — 25, 145 IP
Aug 30 — 26, 150 IP — 300K
Sep 5 — 27, 155 IP
Sep 11 — 28, 160 IP — 350K
Sep 16 — 29, 165 IP
Sep 22 — 30, 170 IP — 400K
Sep 27 — 31, 175 IP
Oct 2 — 32, 180 IP — 500K
Those are just the incentives. Since base salary is based on days of service time, that’s around 50K per start.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
Since base salary is based on days of service time
Ahh…I was calculating it on a per start basis. Still…it’d be nice to see him go someplace this week.
Pavano
Hopefully we can get something for Pavano and Carroll too. All we are saying is give Marte a chance.
I’d expect very little. Whoever we get back won’t be a guy on someone’s 40-man, and might just be cash considerations.

I disagree slightly. I’ll give you that we’re not picking up someone off another teams 40-man, but given how inexpensive he is and if he can put together another solid outing like he did tonight – I think we can pick up another player. Maybe a high-A or some AA guy with some upside. Not necessarily a pitcher, mind you, but someone.
I just wanted to believe.
I’d rather trade him for cash considerations and use the money we save on draft picks, ala Byrd. But in all honesty I wouldn’t be surprised to see him pitching for us next year. If history is any indication Shapiro probably wants to take a flyer on a veteran starting pitcher for the 5th spot in the rotation.
With the free agency depressed market and our history, I think there’s a decent chance he resigns.

Rondon throwing…4 IP, 57 pitches, 2 singles, 1 BB, 4 K. Still tied at 0.
He’s allowed three baserunners, and Marson has gunned down two of them.
In the “too soon” department … is it too soon to start start drooling over the bullpen’s possibility next season?
If only Kerry Wood could locate his slider …

Todd goes 2 perfect innings with 4 Ks. Jeanmar Gomez is off to a good start in Akron through 3 (1 hit, 0 walks, 5 Ks).
Iceland this time? You really do get around. I’m intrigued as to what you’re doing. We should talk at some point.
I just wanted to believe.
I was just connecting. This is the trip I was talking about earlier in the year: I’m in Denmark with my father now (where he works often), then to the Fjords in Norway, then to Morocco.
I always try to fly through Rejykavik because I like that airline (IcelandAir) and because it’s so small you get through EU customs quickly there before getting to the continent. m
I used to play a regular call-in game show on WCBE-FM in Columbus early Sunday mornings. Each player needed a code name. Mine was “Pining for the Fjords.”
