Ryan, I find it uncomfortable to think you’re just sitting out there, watching.

he was at 88 to start the inning. three LH batters (two switch hitters) were due up. the bullpen has pitched well lately. the indians are up by 7 runs.
angels announcers said wedge had talked about 95-100, but they may not, in fact, know anything at all

true enough. do we think a guy his age has any say? does wedge/willis ask him how he’s feeling/if he wants to keep going?
i’m actually picturing wedge treating this guy like a pledge. do not speak unless spoken to, and get me a bacon, egg and cheese every morning…

Valbuena has been the biggest surprise this year. I mean, I had zero expectations for him when we traded for him. I thought Smith was the big “get” in that trade.
i try not to think of gutz right now… how awesome would it have been to have him in the outfield instead of crowe/giminez

well not that laporta is up i’m fine with that… but gutz would help our pitchers a ton and he’s actually hitting this year

I don’t dispute Gutz’s divinity with the glove.
The once and future
by Manhattan Tribe Fan on Aug 20, 2009 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions
Really? I mean Franky was out of options and not really showing any signs of figuring out how to hit. He was seen as 4th OF’er by most people in the league,
There was a lot of discussion about Gutz’s value in the offseason and I think this site reached a consensus that his glove alone made him extremely valuable even if he couldn’t hit that well. That said, most were happy with the trade because of Valbuena’s potential
i wasn’t around for that, so i can’t comment… but i’d probably have been of the valbuena camp
by gorilla_baller on Aug 20, 2009 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions
No, Valbuena had potential … but he was supposed to be a defensive whiz/soft-hitting 2b that MIGHT make the team in 2010. Not this line drive-smacking, Asdrubal clone that we now have.
I don’t think that is necessarily true. Adam from the Annual:
…reports suggest his defense is solid though unspectacular. He projects as an above-average hitter at second base…..
Not saying it is gospel, but I don’t think he just made that up. There was the opinion that he was going to be a good hitter
Ryan and I did a late-night trade analysis on that deal that actually was pretty good, in retrospect. We speculated that we might not even pick up another infielder — not true — based on the idea that we might already have a viable infield with Valbuena in the fold — true. I think it’s an example of our better work, and we were bullish on Valbuena.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
Also! See guys, I was high on Josh J (make fun of THAT, logo) this offseason, too!
This is Victor's home. Victor Jose, you too.
Reports pegged him as having weight problems, but he looks really slim to me.

I agree. I kind of thought, well whoever has the better year of Hodges and him, I’ll back that guy. Hasn’t been much of a competition. And no, I didn’t think Marte would be the Indians’ first baseman in August.

I saw him last year, liked him, had high expectations. I like him the same way I liked Asdrubal in Aug. 07. But I won’t jinx him and buy a jersey in the offseason like I did w the 13.
That didn’t exactly jinx the Droobs.

a s. african runner may possess some male characteristics despite her birth certificate listing her as female… there may be some medals being retroactively stripped pending some very intense testing (including psychological tests, which might be more important)

for people born with hermaphroditism there’s the question of which sex they perceive themselves as… it’s terribly important

I thought you might have pulled that out of your ass, and were making a statement about females being crazy or something. My mistake.
by Chief Wahoo on Aug 20, 2009 10:06 PM EDT up reply actions
I don’t know how important that it for the purposes of athletics. It would be awful if she identified as female and understood herself to be female and it turns out she doesn’t “qualify” as female. But what are the rules? Are there rules?
I’m assuming something with androgen insensitivity would qualify as female though their DNA is male?
Oh sure. But this is drunk logic. Also, time-traveling potatoes.--AngG
i think it would be important but that there would be no way to really make a ruling on it one way or another… this is of course assuming that there IS anything that would cast doubt about her sex

I’m fine with toying around with him in AAA, but, assuming he is promoted in September, I’d hope Wedge knows how to use him.
