good iso, bad luck on balls in play, and decent glovework

by gorilla_baller on Aug 20, 2009 9:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Valbuena has been the biggest surprise this year. I mean, I had zero expectations for him when we traded for him. I thought Smith was the big “get” in that trade.

The once and future

by Manhattan Tribe Fan on Aug 20, 2009 9:42 PM EDT up reply actions

well not that laporta is up i’m fine with that… but gutz would help our pitchers a ton and he’s actually hitting this year

by gorilla_baller on Aug 20, 2009 9:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t dispute Gutz’s divinity with the glove.

The once and future

by Manhattan Tribe Fan on Aug 20, 2009 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Really? I mean Franky was out of options and not really showing any signs of figuring out how to hit. He was seen as 4th OF’er by most people in the league,

by Toxicadam on Aug 20, 2009 9:42 PM EDT up reply actions

There was a lot of discussion about Gutz’s value in the offseason and I think this site reached a consensus that his glove alone made him extremely valuable even if he couldn’t hit that well. That said, most were happy with the trade because of Valbuena’s potential

by Roger Dorn on Aug 20, 2009 9:43 PM EDT up reply actions

i wasn’t around for that, so i can’t comment… but i’d probably have been of the valbuena camp

by gorilla_baller on Aug 20, 2009 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions

No, Valbuena had potential … but he was supposed to be a defensive whiz/soft-hitting 2b that MIGHT make the team in 2010. Not this line drive-smacking, Asdrubal clone that we now have.

by Toxicadam on Aug 20, 2009 9:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn’t think soft-hitting was ever part of his evaluation.

by Chief Wahoo on Aug 20, 2009 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think that is necessarily true. Adam from the Annual:

…reports suggest his defense is solid though unspectacular. He projects as an above-average hitter at second base…..

by Roger Dorn on Aug 20, 2009 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Not saying it is gospel, but I don’t think he just made that up. There was the opinion that he was going to be a good hitter

by Roger Dorn on Aug 20, 2009 9:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Ryan and I did a late-night trade analysis on that deal that actually was pretty good, in retrospect. We speculated that we might not even pick up another infielder — not true — based on the idea that we might already have a viable infield with Valbuena in the fold — true. I think it’s an example of our better work, and we were bullish on Valbuena.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

yeah, it’s really hard not to think that he’s enhanced in some way.

but, enhanced or no, that is a really cool kind of fast he’s putting out there.

Oh god, Chad Johnson kicked a PAT and kickoff during the preseason game tonight.

hahah

by Toxicadam on Aug 20, 2009 9:55 PM EDT reply actions

Why do they let him do shit like that? Do they want to be viewed as a joke?

by Chief Wahoo on Aug 20, 2009 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, preseason is a joke. There should only be 2 preseason games.

by Toxicadam on Aug 20, 2009 9:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, sure, but still.

by Chief Wahoo on Aug 20, 2009 9:58 PM EDT up reply actions

And somehow the Patriots (seemingly) 1st string defense let JT O’Sullivan go 10/13 for 141 and a touchdown. Wow.

i believe it’s Chad Ocho Cinco

by gorilla_baller on Aug 20, 2009 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Chad Ochocinco

This is Victor's home. Victor Jose, you too.

by westbrook on Aug 21, 2009 12:40 AM EDT up reply actions

Legally, it is Chad Ochocinco, but he prefers to spell it Ocho cinco when referring to himself.

by AngG on Aug 21, 2009 12:54 AM EDT up reply actions

The Ocho.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Alright so it looks like I missed Masterson looking really good?

by JRontherim on Aug 20, 2009 9:56 PM EDT reply actions

Looked like Laffey, tons of groundball outs and a couple strikeouts.

Ohh .. yummy groundballs from Smith

when did our bullpen start doing what it is supposed to?

by APV on Aug 20, 2009 9:56 PM EDT reply actions

when we started trusting young arms and not retreads like aquino, herges, etc

by gorilla_baller on Aug 20, 2009 9:57 PM EDT up reply actions

The retreads only came in after the Raffies, Smith, Wood, etc. had started to defecate the furniture.

Apparently it is, as Ding Dong is from San Antonio, as is the fellow UnderManning was talking about.

Not sure if it was mentioned in the last game thread, but RJ Swindle pitched again today. 1 2/3 innings, 1 hit, 1 unearned run, 2 walks (both to RH), 1 K

Is that the 58 MPH curve guy?

by Chief Wahoo on Aug 20, 2009 10:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep, I wasn’t around to watch/follow his appearance today, but I saw his Clippers debut and I loved him immediately.

by JRontherim on Aug 20, 2009 10:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m pretty sure he shouldn’t be going 1 2/3 innings

by APV on Aug 20, 2009 10:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m fine with toying around with him in AAA, but, assuming he is promoted in September, I’d hope Wedge knows how to use him.

I’m into it , but I haven’t read very much yet. It may be over the top, but I wouldn’t say too far.

by Chief Wahoo on Aug 20, 2009 10:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Hence why I asked if it was any good. On the other hand, it could be both over the top and AWESOME.

by AngG on Aug 20, 2009 10:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Haha, yes. Over the top can be pretty awesome if done correctly: Eastbound and Down.
